The NYT Drops Its Bombshell on Paterson

Remember all those rumors that the New York Times had a “bombshell” story on New York Governor David Paterson? That one never went off, but this one just dropped:

Last fall, a woman went to court in the Bronx to testify that she had been violently assaulted by a top aide to Gov. David A. Paterson, and to seek a protective order against the man.

In the ensuing months, she returned to court twice to press her case, complaining that the State Police had been harassing her to drop it. The State Police, which had no jurisdiction in the matter, confirmed that the woman was visited by a member of the governor’s personal security detail.

Then early this month, days before she was due to return to court to seek a final protective order, the woman got a phone call from the governor, according to her lawyer. She failed to appear for her next hearing on Feb. 8, and as a result her case was dismissed.

Many details of the governor’s role in this episode are unclear, but the accounts presented in court and police records and interviews with the woman’s lawyer and others portray a brutal encounter, a frightened woman and an effort to make a potential political embarrassment go away.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

If confirmed, indefensible, on just so many levels.

“Karen, I am deeply disappointed in you. This is a clearly partisan attack against a Democrat. Shame on you. Why, there’s what’s his name from the Appalachian Trail, Gov. Mark Sanford–he’s a Republican. Why don’t you go after him? The fact that you can bash Paterson and not Sanford just shows how far to the right you have tacked. That flushing sound you hear is what remained of TIME’s credibility.”
    .
(The above message was brought to you from the alternate universe inhabited by several–not all, but several–of the GOP wingnut posters on this blog. Facts not necessary–all that’s required is outrage. Plus repeating “tax cuts” and “tort reform” as often as possible.)

  • gysgt213

Does anyone really care about this. Paterson has been a train wreck from the start.

  • http://elvisberg.wordpress.com Elvis Elvisberg

Wow. This is actually worse than what I’d expected. This is grounds for compelling the resignation of a mayor or sheriff, much less a governor. If this is true, he is going to have to go.

  • jcapan

Gunny, I’d guess the state’s 20 million residents. But since I’m not among them ….

  • sasquatch08

    Shakespeare:

No offense, but why would a GOP supporter or “wingnut” (your term, not mine) be against a partisan attack on a Democrat?
    .
Personally, I won’t have an opinion on this topic until all the facts are out. I’m not willing to go down the road with a politician (Democrat or Republican) that the country did with the Duke Lacrosse players a few years back. Maybe he did attack this woman, but then again maybe she’s making it up. I don’t know.
    .
I want all of the facts before I agree to publicly crucify this guy; not “Many details of the governor’s role in this episode are unclear…” because that’s exactly what happened to those kids at Duke, which came close to ruining their lives. Many people decided they were rapists long before it became absolutely crystal clear that this woman lied about the situation and had a history of doing this sort of stuff before.
    .
That’s just not fair if you’re an athlete, a regular John Q. Public or a politician.

I think he’s been identified as “dead meat” for a while. Hopefully, NY can replace him with someone decent in the next election.

Don’t worry. He’ll be gone soon enough.
    .
And he won’t be coming back.

While the “brutal encounter” is pretty concerning in its own right, the fact that the police have already testified that “the woman was visited by a member of the governor’s personal security detail” is pretty bad optics. Not quite “resignation” bad, but pretty bad and fairly indicative about how much legs this story has had in the first place.

Chalk it up to a failed attempt at irony. A day or two ago, Karen Tumulty had a post up, “Paging Sarah Palin” (http://swampland.blogs.time.com/2010/02/22/paging-sarah-palin/) about a Virginia state delegate (a Republican) who essentially said disabled children are God’s punishment to women who aborted their first pregnancy. Immediately, some posters started criticizing her for picking on a Republican state politician and started listing lots of Democrats who had also said awful things, then proceeded to flame KT for being in the tank for Dems.
    .
It’s gotten so that any criticism of a political figure results in over-the-top, scorched-earth rhetoric. I mean, it’s not like KT was criticizing Israel.

What is it with politicians and Albany?
    .
Not that we’re great in Georgia, either. We had one sheriff who, after losing his re-election bid, had the winner murdered. We also have a senator named Saxby.

  • abdullah69

Lucky for this woman that she did not live in Alaska. She would without doubt have been eliminated, and then used by the Governor as an excuse for resignation in the interests of the taxpayer.

  • kevin

Seriously. He was already going down in the primary, but at this point he should just resign.

    Shakespeare:

Thanks for the reply, I apologize for not following your post quite thoroughly enough. That said, everyone has attempts at irony that fall flat, I do it every day.
    .
“It’s gotten so that any criticism of a political figure results in over-the-top, scorched-earth rhetoric.”
    .
I absolutely agree with your statement here. As to your previous comments (in post 5.2) I also agree, though I was not aware of the heat that KT had taken. Politicians say stupid and inflammatory stuff all the time, personally I think that saying something like that about people who had previously had an abortion might actually be grounds for a good ol’ tar and feathering. That might be a bit extreme however; my understanding of that practice is that it regularly caused death due to an infection after massive skin burns. In my mind there is room for statement of facts that might anger some people (or many) but making outlandish statements like the one you mentioned, which have no basis in fact, is shocking and deplorable.
    .
I do have some old tomatoes though…

  • pafro

He should have hired to Haliburton/KBR lawyers to harass her and make up stories about what a sl-u-t she is, like the Haliburton/KBR lawyers did to the that woman that got drugged and gang-raped by some other KBR employees in Iraq. I bet if Paterson did that he could find 30 or so Senate Republicans to get his back.

  • http://teacherreaderwriter.wordpress.com/ Shakespeare in GA

WTH? Either a.) you have some form of keyboard Tourette’s, or b.) you just called abdullah69 a goat copulator. What is wrong with you?

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

Just to be clear here, as it seems that some may have got this confused, the governor is not being accused of assaulting this woman. The alleged assault was by an aid to Paterson, he merely looks to be covering it up. Not that that is justifiable, but it’s a clarification worth noting…

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

Brilliant, 2/3, just brilliant. You’ve masterfully managed to display both your incoherent idiocy and your profound racism in a mere two words.

Here is your SAT question for the day.
    Paterson : Scooter Libby
    as?

  • the committee

I don’t know why people here want to stray off topic. Paterson and his aide should probably be booted in the most efficient manner possible. So should the cops.

I’m surprised at Paterson. This doesn’t seem like his brand of insanity.

  • kevin

It’s not keyboard tourette’s. In a previous thread, he called abdullah a “raghead.”

  • kathy

So this begs the question – did the governor offer to buy off the woman, or did he threaten her – or was it a coincidence she didn’t appear at the hearing?

Also wonder who gave the original info to the times – her lawyer?
