Soft?

Taliban leaders are getting rolled up all over Pakistan. Boy, that Obama sure is soft on terrorism.

(And is it necessary–yes, I guess absolutely necessary–to note that the patient diplomacy of Hillary Clinton, Richard Holbrooke, Admiral Mike Mullen, General David Petraeus and National Security Adviser Jim Jones is what has nudged the Pakistanis into taking a far more aggressive posture against the Taliban than they ever did during the Bush Administration?)

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

It’s encouraging news after seeing Pakistan happily cash our checks while tacitly harboring our enemies. Bush’s brand of back clapping, look the other way diplomacy didn’t pay huge dividends over there.

  • R

Yeah, Joe, but he doesn’t say “War on Terror” enough. Obama needs to say “War on Terror” a lot more. Then, he’d finally be tough enough. Yessirree!

Not to really spoil the party about how great Diplomacy is (since I am a fan), but I think the Taliban invading an extra territory probably was a major factor.

  • http://forgottenlord.livejournal.com forgottenlord

BTW: could someone remind me of the name of that Pakistani region. The name escapes me

  • R

    Oh, yeah, and BOMB IRAN!

  • queencersei

A very good development. Now alert me when the powers that be in that region decided to cough up Bin Ladin or Ayman Muhammad Rabaie al-Zawahiri.

  • kbanginmotown

You realize that something *serious* has to happen prior to the doctor saying, “Cough.”
    .
Perhaps we’re getting to that point.

  • maverick2k9

Invading an extra territory?? Nah.. Just chickens coming home to roost.

  • tstar3

But Cheney said he was soft, and he read the miranda rights to a guy with hot pants and he uses a teleprompter and he can’t say corpsemen and and…..

  • destor23

Though I’m of course glad to see the plan working I’m still concerned that we’re fighting the wrong people. The Taliban ain’t Al-Qaeda. I don’t like the Taliban much but I don’t have a hige interest in spending money fighting them either. Are we any closer to accomplishing the actual mission of the war from 2001? You know, capturing or killing Bin Laden?

  • queencersei

Just suppose Bin Ladin did get captured on Obama’s watch. How many seconds do you think it would take before Cheney’s head exploded?

  • maverick2k9

Classic chicken hawk.. Anyone can be tough.. sitting in their living room.

  • nflfoghorn

    Helmand?

  • nflfoghorn

1.3 seconds. Patrick Leahy timed it.

    Joe

Have you gone soft in the head? Are we talking about the same gu?:

My “it’s only a guess” guesses: AQ can’t defecate without us knowing where the outhouse is so it’s extremely unlikely a terrorist attack on a 9/11 level will happen again (doesn’t rule out sympathizers on a smaller scale however). OBL is either dead (when have you seen a recent pic of him lately?) or incapacitated to the point where he can’t move around much due to his kidney dialysis. Zawahiri is somewhere in Pakistan where T#2 was found. Omar’s trolling along the border. And as long as we don’t kill off EVERY AQ/Taliban operative we’ll likely put a major dent in these guys’ activities within the next 1-2 years. I venture to say that BO’s approach to terror has netted us more bad guys in 13 months than the Bushmen did after they took their collective eyes off Afghanistan and placed them on Iraq.

Given the fact that Obama actually thinks that the defendants at the Nuremberg trials had U.S. constitutional rights and given the fact that Obama and his so-called “attorney general” think that al Qaeda members are entitled to U.S. constitutional rights, has Obama demanded that Pakistan read the captured al Qaeda member his Miranda so-called “rights”? Has Obama sent a taxpayer funded legal team to represent him?

  • kevin

When OBL is captured, Cheney will rush to the cameras to denounce his arrest and say he should have been killed on sight.
    .
And if OBL is killed, Cheney will rush to the cameras to denounce his killing and say he should have been tortured.

  • kevin

Sorry, he won’t rush to the cameras, he’ll use his personal press secretaries at Politico.

Joe didn’t notice that the ‘new’ Prime Minister is the widower of the previous candidate for PM assassinated by this very same Taliban. Perhaps that little piece of diplomacy was a more relevent factor?

  • libsarescary

When most of the world leaders think you are a buffoon, I think you are soft. It’s great all of these terrorists are being captured and killed. Having more drones in the air (authorized by Bush) probably helps. But, it’s Obamas war and he has to get credit…and I hope he get Bin Laden…..no matter who gets the credit, I would just like it to be over.

  • allthingsinaname

It deoesn’t matter. The WH, the Dems have lost the message war.
    >
The Press is going to follow the Rep all over while they make wild statements unchallanged. It sells. The press could care less about the ramifications. They figure that somehow they will survive.
    .
    It truely is depressing.

  • nflfoghorn

While his body’s likely giving out, Osama’s arms are indeed fully operational. :)

  • jsfox

“Given the fact that Obama actually thinks that the defendants at the Nuremberg trials had U.S. constitutional rights . . .”

Really? Please post a link that supports this statement. One that has Obama saying this or something even remotely close.

    No, in Pakistan
