The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

In this political climate anyone with Presidential aspirations had better fly coach. And didn’t I read a while back that Romney quietly sold one of his homes? No way is he going to get flamed for owning multiple properties like McCain was.

Sounds to me like old Mitt needs to mind his own business.

First rule of flying, don’t look anyone in the eye.
Second rule of flying, speak only when spoken too.
Third rule of flying, if your religion starts with the letter “M”, people are going to look at you suspiciously.

    Ahem.
They fly coach so that upon their election, the CEOs – who fund their campaigns – can fly private (and over 50 million destitute sickly Americans may teeter on the brink of nothingness.)

That is the essence of capitalist America.

  • Paul-no not that one

I read the headline and thought this was going to be a post about Kevin Smith.

Aw, c’mon. This guy was putting his seat back right into Ann Romney’s lap. I wish Mr. Swamp were this chivalrous. :)

” .. First rule of flying, don’t look anyone in the eye…”

Because out there, everything that moves or squats in the mud is jealous of our freedoms and wants to kill you and eat your eyes for jujubes.

Too bad I wasn’t on the flight. The person in front of me is always the one who puts his seat alllllll the way back. Therefore, Mrs. Romney wouldn’t have been bothered.

However, I read it as this happened during take off when you are required to have seat up.

Another liberal tenet about conservatives evaporating?

I await to read the castigation o f this by the bigot police here.

Since when do the seats in coach go allllllll the way back? The recline feature is a joke, with maybe a 1-2″ difference from verticle. It’s not the passengers’ fault that there are too many seats jammed into each plane with no room whatsoever regardless if the seat is “reclined” or not.

  • freeinpa

Maybe Romney should have booked on Air Pelosi instead.

  • Ivy_B

To be more precise, as far back as the seat will go – and then frequently sit up straight without their head even touching the top of the seat. Last time I flew the attendant asked the person in front of me to raise the seat when the meal was served.
    .
It is the passenger’s fault to be utterly thoughtless about anyone except themself.

Freeinpa: nah, the bigot police don’t have an issue with that statement. See, in this case, the only presumption is that, out of 500 people, at least one of them will not only be a bigot but one that stares. Considering that my mom, who is normally a fairly open minded person, has admitted she’d probably do the bigoted thing and be suspicious of any Muslims that stepped on the plane, I think finding one out of 500 would be like looking for a junk at a dump.

  • freeinpa

    forgottenlord:

I am sure you had a point but I am pretty sure in yogi’s reference to “M” religion and Romney it was Mormon. Not sure how Muslims, junk and your mother fit into the response

  • foundlacking

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I still maintain that passengers are expected to put with excreble design by the airline industry which does nothing but heap misery on the poor suckers who must travel coach. This is in addition to the well-known irritants caused by unfathomable delays, cancellations, gate changes, and lack of communication or outright lying by airline staff about what’s going on. Add to that our friendly TSA representatives, and it’s a wonder that every flight does not end up in hand to hand combat.

Maybe he’s saving a little of the family fortune so that he can blow it on another run for the presidency. He came sooooo close last time.
