The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Whole charade reminds me of punishing a child by giving him/her a cookie for behaving badly.

  • carotexas1

    No.

  • deconstructiva

KT, per your tweets, are you in still in TX with friends and family? If DC keeps digging itself out of snow, can you get “stranded” in Las Vegas? It can be “work” if you spend part of the time checking out Reid’s re-election chances first hand (and his son’s race too). Which SB team did you root for? I was for Saints all the way (huge Brees fan).
    .
re: summit, I’m not betting on any results …and that could be a trap for R’s if they don’t come up with real ideas and Obama plays that card in subsequent coverage. Thoughts?

  • apr2563

How can Obama find common ground with nihilist Republicans that want no compromises, infact, no bill?
Never mind that Americans continue to suffer without coverage and insurance companies continue to make big bucks in the most inefficient system in the first world economies.
Why does Obama keep kidding us? The only hope is fillabuster and reconciliation. But, that would take spine on his and the Dems part.

  • spob

And so we’re gonna stick it to those insurance cos. by forcing Americans to fork over money to them. Gotcha.

  • spob

KT, could you please kick Kate in the shins (figuratively, of course)?
    .
    She writes:

“But then again, Obama is right about the fact that there is wide misunderstanding about what’s in the House and Senate reform bills. The latest tracking poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation, for instance, showed that 60% believe Democratic health reform would increase the deficit in the next 10 years. The Congressional Budget Office says this is not true.”
    .
Could someone please inform Ms. Pickert that a CBO score is NOT even intended to be a prediction of actual real-world results, so the CBO wouldn’t even say whether a prediction about the real world budget deficit was true or untrue.

  • deconstructiva

…spob, did you read KT’s piece about the CBO director and how his work is viewed? If you can disprove her work, well, good luck. But spare us your KP and KT-kicking without first doing some homework.
    http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1958671,00.html

  • spob

CBO scoring is static–life is dynamic.

  • deconstructiva

That’s your best shot at proving the reporters wrong? That’s all?

  • spob

deconstructiva, how ignorant are you? Do you even know the difference between static and dynamic scoring? And would the CBO, in the face of someone saying, “oh, that’s going to increase the deficit”, say “not true”?
    .
The CBO wouldn’t–first of all, forget about the “actual results” may differ caveat. CBO scoring isn’t even designed to predict actual outcomes–that’s the whole point of static scoring. So what happens if a million illegal aliens become citizens? What happens if people respond to incentives in certain ways? None of that is accounted for in the CBO scoring.

  • deconstructiva

Tossing around the name-calling again, eh? Sorry, no attention, I mean, discussion for you tonight, some other time, bye.

  • deconstructiva

…meant to be 5.5, of course, adios.

  • spob

nice cover deconstructiva–i’ve clowned you. And so you bail.
    .
I do my homework. That’s why I tend to win in here.

  • redraven937

That’s why I tend to win in here.

    lol?
    .
    Are you six years old?

  • apr2563

spob, what do you win? What are we playing for? Do you win the I am a right wing robot award? Or, the I could have been a contender award? I award you the Sarah Palin Award for Outstanding Arrogance.

  • anon76

arrogance or ignorance? (pretending that Palin could not deservedly award both)

  • kathy

Ah, so it’s all about winning or losing is it? How typical of you.

People stop responding to you because it isn’t worth the effort and you generally degenerate into ad hominem attacks – not because you’re winning. Sorry you didn’t realize that.

  • hotbbq

Are there going to be Republicans at this event? If so, the answer is no, nothing will come of it.

  • newfreedomblog

“[The] Whole charade reminds me of punishing a child by giving him/her a cookie for behaving badly.”

    .
Unfortunately this is all too true. To qualify it more, your are referring to the Democrats with this statement, right?
    .
If so, I would definatley agree. In the entire process / debate, if we can call it that, Democrats from the President down have acted and behaved like children. The “behaving badly” part was, “I have all the toys, you do not, and now I will make you play how I want the game played or you can just go home”.
    .
Is that an accurate description of “playing badly”?
    .
The Democrats for over a year enjoyed a 60 vote “super” majority in the Senate, a clear majority in the House, and a Democrat President.
    .
The rejection of this bill was not from simply Republicans. It is a rejection of this specific bill from over 60% of Americans. The polling clearly has shown over the past year as Americans have understood this very complex bill, they do not like it at all. The Republicans to your disdain, went with the populist sentiments, and they have won. First, election victories in Virginia, New Jersey and last but overwhelmingly not least, Massachusetts.
    .
The election of Scott Brown (R-MA) has sent a clear and undeniable message to Washington. “We do not like your Health Care Plan Mr President, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Go back and do it all over again.”.
    .
The over 2000 page Health Care Reform bill is full of crap. Americans understand and fully see when a bill is crap, they do not want any part of it. Period.
    .
This is nothing more than political theater. Obama is attempting to show some bipartisanship work on a bill, and then come back ramming it through as is, I am confident. People will reject it yet again.
    .
The American people have spoken very loudly and clearly. “We do not want this bill as our Health Care Reform Policy”. Go back and work on it, this time with bipartisianship in mind, keep the meetings transparent, and then present another bill that has the things in it which will provide for reform.
    .
Obama has proven yet again he is out of touch. Those of us in the majority will need to once and for all tell Mr Obama we do not like your plan. Hopefully the Tea Party Patriots will voice themselves, and make ourselves heard yet again.
    .
The question, will the lame stream media simply shill for Obama in order to get another of their progressive ideas pushed through Congress? What say you Ms Tumulty? More shilling for Obama in your day planner for us?

  • spob

Oh that’s right guys, deconstructiva tells me to do my homework, I respond in kind, and I’m the 6 year old. And as for winning, I’m talking about debates. You guys crow when you think Obama wins a debate–I’m just following your lead.
    .
One of the premises of Kate’s post is that the people are misinformed because their views don’t jibe with CBO scoring, even though CBO scoring isn’t designed to be real-world. Come on guys. Kate overstated her case–she should just admit it an move on.

  • http://twitter.com/ktumulty Karen Tumulty

Still stuck in Dallas. Day three. Hoping to get home today. Thanks for asking.

  • http://www.ghostnote.com Cookie Puss

    No.

  • 3xfire3

    newfreedom,
Yes they will continue to shill for Obama. Unless the president is willing to consider major changes to the HCR bill the meeting will be strictly politics on his part.

  • 3xfire3

    apr2563,
The HCR bill as it stands had no real republican involvement in it creation. It is a democrat’s bill, drafted in private, without republican input. No bill of this magnitude can be passed without true partnership between the parties. Obama and the democrats assumed with their large majority that they really didn’t need republican to pass a bill. That was their mistake and now they are still trying to force their bill through by giving the appearance that they are allowing republican input. 10 to 1 odds that Obama will say at the meeting that he will consider republican ideas but will then try again to push through the democratic drafted bill.
The bottom line is he will not accept any significant changes suggested by the republicans.
That’s too bad. Most republicans believe in HCR but not the approach Obama wants to take.
Democrats and liberals can keep saying republican don’t want reform. If they have any intelligence they know that that is a lie and that republicans also want reform just not Obama’s approach to reform.

  • 3xfire3

    decon,
    Good evasive answer.
Don’t know the answer to spob question do you.
Your name calling will only get you so far.
Learn to deal with the facts. You might find it a good experience.

  • FlownOver

I beg to differ. I’d love to see the president pose a question to Mitch McConnell, followed by the camera panning to an empty chair.
    .
Either the Republican deception artists will show up – and be shown up – or they’ll be exposed as the lying obstructionist cowards they really are.

  • newfreedomblog

I know 3xfire3. But what really irks me is our so-called Press. The representatives on this site are so biased in their reporting they will skew anything in order to run with a story which is positive about what is plainly a bad bill.
    .
The liberals believe anything is a good health care reform bill so long as they get something on the books.
    .
The problem is the complexity, all the unknowns and outcomes are bad in this bill.
    .
None of the provisions no matter how they twist it, turn it, or shout out about it tackle the real problem with our health care insurance system, COSTS.
    .
The Democrat Plan as represented by Obama, Pelosi and Reid WILL increase the cost of health care insurance. Why else does Big Labor, one of the Democrats major supporters want a DEAL?
    .
They want a deal because if their members get taxed on their big health care Cadillac Plans then Obama, Pelosi and Reid know this proposed bill is DOA.
    .
Why so many deals and bribes to get this bill passed. Has Karen Tumulty or her little side-kick Kate Pickert asked any of those questions yet? Have they gone to confront Obama, Pelosi or Reid on any of the bribes, payoffs and deals?
    .
Let me answer. Absolutely not. Has the press gone to cities and towns with their proposals and sponsored like Fox News has town hall meetings for real Americans to voice their concerns about this bill? Hell no. Why? Because they are nothing but liberal SHILLS for Obama, Pelosi and Reid.

  • newfreedomblog

Will Obama have his teleprompter poised and ready with all the questions?

  • apr2563

spob: Hey we agree. I would love to do away with the for profit health insurance companies and have Single Payer. Glad you are on my side.

3x: Republicans want all or nothing. Remember the gang of six and the negotiations? By August Grassley was out yelling death panels. Baucus et al caved on many points, but it was never enough.

  • bobcn1

‘I beg to differ. I’d love to see the president pose a question to Mitch McConnell, followed by the camera panning to an empty chair.’
    .
This could be interesting (which is why the gopers won’t show up). If they do show up we could have ‘Question Time’ for republicans.
    .
Ask McConnell or Boner what their solution to cost control is. After it is pointed out that tort reform will only affect prices by 0.5% (maximum) and that it hasn’t worked in states that have implemented reform laws, they will duck and dodge. Offer a compromise that includes tort reform legislation and ask what the gopers are willing to compromise on to get it. Expect more ducking and dodging. Just keep asking the same short, direct question again and again.
    .
BTW — Blue Cross (probably celebrating the expected demise of HCR) just raised the rates on premiums for individuals by over 30% in my state. People who say we don’t need to change the system are fools that don’t think it will only happen to other people — never to themselves.

  • bobcn1

Rats! Another copy/paste typo. The last line in my previous post was meant to be:
‘People who say we don’t need to change the system are fools that think it will only happen to other people — never to themselves.’

  • sfpatriot

I can remember so many times in my life when I needed a job, a place to sleep, etc, no one helped me. Now they want to steal my money to take care of criminals(illegals). I will stop paying taxes. I have reached my limit with you morons. You don’t even know me, and you call me dumb. Like I said, and will keep saying, I can do your job anyday of the week. You could never do mine. I will bet a year’s salary on it. You are all talk and no substance swampdick, just like the president!
