    The Not-So-Great Debate

Rick Santorum had a pretty lousy night in Arizona, but his candidacy has raised some valuable social questions, as I argue in my latest print column (available to TIME subscribers). His candidacy also demonstrates the traditional problems that long-term members of Congress have when they attempt to run for President. Legislative democracy is complicated and untidy. You have to make difficult choices all the time–and, to my mind, the decisive moment in Wednesday night’s debate came when Santorum empretzeled himself in an effort to explain why he’d voted to fund Planned Parenthood, of all things.

‘Leon the Lip’: Defense Secretary Panetta’s Candid Approach to Politics

Leon Panetta first ran afoul of a president when he was a lowly federal staffer more than 40 years ago. The president was Richard Nixon, who didn’t like the way Panetta, then a civil-rights advocate at the old Department of Health, Education and Welfare, pressed the Administration to speed up school integration. Panetta resigned, moved [...]

    Oh my freaking God.

  • hellslittlestangel

Eh. Personally, I find hate- and fearmongering much creepier. But, KT, don’t you owe Talking Points Memo a tip of the hat on this one?

I like the use of “evah” KT. Let’s see this more often.

Good grief! Who let Uncle Fester make a campaign video?

Bigger question here: Why is coroner an elected position? Are dead bodies really that important in NOLA?

How did they convince Dick Cheney to play both Igor and the Doctor?

Hate to 2nd the blogwhore, but seriously, coroners are elected!? Is that like dogcatcher?

  • jcapan

BTW, you political animal, KT, any of you folks or blokes wanna comment on the British version of democracy, vis a vis the grilling Blair got at the Chilcot Inquiry vs. the cush sailing our own preemptive warmonger in chief is experiencing, clearing brush in Tejas, choking on pretzels.

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

We don’t openly or publicly hold our politicians to account. To do so would be in bad taste, unless of course matters of utter national integrity are involved, you know, sex scandals and such.

  • http://www.peterhsu.org Peter

The people of New Orleans decided to have an elected rather than appointed coroner, and so they richly deserve whichever of the two hacks wins.

Oh the prefabricated self righteous liberal indignation is so predictably monotonous. Just so much background noise.

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

I’m curious, 2thirds. What does the desire to see our politicians asked the tough questions, held to account, and forced to act in transparency have to do with either a liberal or conservative label? Would you prefer to see a continuation of the American Idol version of American politics? I know, reality TV is so bloody entertaining, so I can understand if your answer is ‘yes.’

David Kelly didn’t get to ask Blair any questions, did he?

You speak as if there were only one shameless BW at Swampland, and yet there are two just on this thread. Is there any conventional wisdom such as “don’t feed the trolls” that will make them go away?

  • jcapan

I’d have to consult SZ, blog etiquette/convention extraordinaire, but I’d say linking to your blog in your user name is the appropriate thing to do.

What bugs me is they seek to generate traffic yet they contribute nothing remotely provocative (or developed enough to amt. to anything). Matt’s morsels of the obvious are particularly annoying. Then again, by acknowledging them at all…

I think the corpse is HCR.

  • Dee in Columbia MD

No spob this is what happens to those of us who can’t but insurance without it.

  • spob

Well, then it’s time to figure out what commonsense things can be done to improve our healthcare system. Your party’s attempt to mess with everyone’s healthcare is, thankfully, kaput.
    .
And speaking of figurative corpses–what about all the victims in LA from costly consent decrees which divert scarce resources away from actual police work?

This is what happens to those of us who don’t have insurance because we don’t have jobs.

Since the subject of selling body parts was brought up, it’s time to legalize prostitution.
