What Will Joe Wilson Do Tonight?

Apparently, behave himself. The congressman made famous for yelling “You lie!” in the middle of President Obama’s health care speech tells AP that we shouldn’t expect a repeat performance during the State of the Union address tonight:

“I am a gentleman. My natural inclination is to be on my best behavior,” he said. “I have the highest respect for the president, and I certainly look forward to the speech.”

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know, until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, were the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, whom Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

It would take a great deal of discipline not to comment. but the Republicans will have their comments afterwords

  • charlieromeobravo

Very nice. And he conveniently reminds his supporters what a rebel his is standing up to Obama’s “lies” even though Wilson was wrong and never apologized for anything more than being rude (to put it mildly).

The political environment is so acrid and everything seems to be done to play to the cameras or the base. I’m ashamed to say that I’m feeling very trepidacious about tonight’s speech.

  • deconstructiva

KT, I’m sure someone will fill in for Wilson. Do you have a list of “potential suspects” to replace him? That’s a great betting pool: “Which R will lose it tonight?” Will you be there in person or liveblog it? If not, I hope you can gather with friends and have a drinking game (best phrases?).
    .
When does the WH release the text? I really hope Obama hits the jobs issue hard (for personal reasons – still no permanent work for me). Finance reform will be huge (I hope that’s your next big story). Then there’s HCR, but I digress.
    .
Is Jay coming back soon? I’m sorry for missing your last “1000 words”, KT. I’ll try to catch the next one.

“I am a gentleman. My natural inclination is to be on my best behavior,” he said. “I have the highest respect for the president,”

I’m pretty sure your status as a gentleman with respect for the president already has been established.

  • stevebeste

No drinking before the State of the Union.

  • Matt

He’ll probably be joined in his presidential jeering by plenty of Republican colleagues after the boost he received from his own outburst. Sad, but true.

Back from the UK where the Iraq Inquiry is turning up all sorts of stuff pointing to the deceptions of Tony Blair. Now in the land of the special interests by the special interests for the special interests. Depressing!

You may hear more “You Lie!!” from the Democrat side of the aisle tonight. Ever think on that?
    .
Clearly Obama from reading here in the swamp by commenters, and the journos such as Karen that the progressive agenda has not pushed hard enough.
    .
If the progressives do not shout out, “You Lie”, you can bet on the majority of Americans tomorrow to give our President a big ear full of “You Lie”.
    .
That is all this wack-job for a President has done since taking office. Blame others and lie his pants off.

  • rustyreturns

One would also think that TIME reporters would perhaps write something about all the failures the past year by Obama.
    .
Write about the things he hasn’t done to date that he promised in the campaign.
    .
How he screwed up health care reform.
    .
How ineffective this President has been with the economy.
    .
How jobs continue to be lost despite over 787 TRILLION of wasted tax payer dollars.
    .
How we are less safe from terror attacks than we were 8 years before.
    .
But, what do we focus on here? Wilson. A Republican who simply spoke up and called Obama exactly what he is, a LIAR.

  • rustyreturns

Here in the country we have an old saying for someone who doesn’t do their job.
    .

“You are as useless as tits on a boar hog”

    .
That sums it up for Barack Obama and all the reporters of TIME. com

    Obvious troll is obvious.

  • http://derekg.wordpress.com/ Derek

Rusty I don’t understand why a right-winger would be angry with Obama over the economy. I thought the right wants the government to just stay out of the way and let the economy fix itself. Surely, things would be much better now, if he had let the financial system totally collapse, wouldn’t they?

  • nflfoghorn

If you have nothing good to say about someone, Rust…you know the rest, and you’d be doing both readers and yourself a favor.

Joe, some people have told me that I act like a gentleman. I’ve found that I must constantly work at acting like a gentleman.

  • razionaltinker

Why he will sing his own rendition of “I Got A Feeling”, of course.

  • kbanginmotown

I’ll be interested to hear how much prodding Reid and the Senate get from the president.
    .
BTW: Joe’s “Too Dumb to Thrive” post is still getting hits and comments. He’ll be a while living that one down…

  • deconstructiva

…if the swamp reporters get paid by the page hits (like Gawker used to do) then Joe must be laughing all the way to the bank.

  • rustyreturns

Wow Derek, I didn’t realize you had crystal balls like Joe Klein, and are able to see into the future and past to say if doing nothing would have been a bad thing for the country.
    .
Obviously, DOING something didn’t help. What makes you think that not spending all the trillions and billions of dolalrs would have been a bad thing?
    .
Or do you just explain it all away like this Administration does and say, “we’ll *huck* *huck*, we’s be very intelligent, we’s saved or created jobs. *huck* *huck*.”
    .
Sometimes NOT doing anything is better than thowing money needlessly at a problem that you may or may not fix no matter what you do. Failure or bankruptcy is not always a bad thing for bad and failing businesses. Most often those senarios create and cause people to be more creative. Ever think on that Mr Elite and intellectual genius?
    .
But, when you drink at the trough of kool-aid this Administration feeds you, you do sometimes have eyes glazed over in pure stupidity.
    .
Ask Joe Klein, he thinks Americans are too stupid to even know what day of the week it is, let alone what it takes to fix all the problems in this country.

  • rustyreturns

Joe Klein was beat down badly yesterday by Glenn Beck, decon.
    .
I loved every minute of it. I’m sure it is all of my “right-winger” friends reading the garbage that Joe spewed the other day.
    .
Joe Klein the Elitist. Sipping on his bottle of Chateau St Jean Cabernet Sauvignon. Flipping his nose up at all the “stupid, dumb people in America”.
    .
Do you drink the same wine, decon?

  • Ivy_B

kbang, I went back to look at that post. Good grief. I’ll bet he’s sorry he raised all that spittle. Just think, it wasn’t long ago that he was threatening regular commenters. That thread makes us look pretty good.

  • deconstructiva

Rusty, I usually drink Lindemans. It’s good stuff and Kroger often has it on sale cheap. re: Beck, after all that TIME did for him, he did that? What an ingrate. Then again, maybe he got lucky. Imagine if he had tried to shoot down KT or Amy. KT would’ve politely chopped him into tiny pieces. Amy would’ve just zapped him with a bolt of lightning.

It is my natural inclination to not do something that would allow my opponents to raise a million dollars in 3 days due to my actions. Does this wisdom ever apply to liberals? Nah otherwise they would never have anything to say.

  • http://theblindspotsofgod.wordpress.com lawyermommy

The issue is WHO CARES?? Joe Wilson is a disrespectful Charlatan who should have been carried out after he screamed at a sitting President during a speech. In the old days, he would have been beheaded. :)
These days though, he makes a fool of himself, insults the head of the free world and is able to raise more money for his election because of his misbehavior.

I hope no one raises the ante and throws a shoe at Obama. Nothing was done to vigorously discourage Wilson’s boorish conduct and so some other low life might do something even more atrocious.

Here’s to hoping some Representative will not moon Obama today. Hey, you never know!

Left unmentioned in KT’s post is that then Senator Obama wasn’t exactly gracious during Bush’s SOTU.
    .
And, oh by the way, nice little fibbing by Obama when he was interviewed by Sawyer (again unmentioned in the Swamp). Obama said that he wasn’t involved in the deals. Yeah, right.

  • freeinpa

He also happens to be right.

He lied throughout the campaign and he has lied since he has been in office. Wilson may have been disrespectful but if the press had done any amount of honest reporting Obama would have been outed long before Joe Wilson did..

No one should ever have to apologize for being right. He got one “you lie” when he should have heard a steady stream of them. Even at the end when he said “God bless America” the country said, “you lie!”.
