22 Years Later, God Calls Oral Roberts Home

Christian evangelist Oral Roberts, who died today at age 91, often gets lumped in with Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson by those who don’t know any better and assume he was a leading member of the Religious Right in the 1970s and 80s. But while Roberts was of the same generation as the other men, he was never involved with politics as they were. Instead, Roberts was one of the first televangelists, and he spent most of his life leading crusades and building the university that bears his name.

If the evangelist is known widely, it is because of a famous plea he made to supporters in 1987, warning them through tears that God would “call me home” unless he raised $8 million for the university. The plea reportedly resulted in $9.1 million in donations–in any case, Roberts stayed healthy and alive.

Billy Graham, who was a close contemporary of Roberts, released a statement noting that he had talked to the televangelist three weeks ago and that Roberts told him “he was at the end of his life’s journey.” This time, his prediction was no fundraising effort.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

    .
He nearly died of TB as a teen and a faith healing session literally changed his life / determined his career. I remember his famous 1987 appeal (to my eye-rolling bemusement), but alas, the medical center to which he (literally?) offered his life closed later anyway. His son didn’t do a great job running his university, either. The NYT has another obit – http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/16/us/16roberts.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all

…they couldn’t strike a deal with Prego? Did Prego ever figure out the “pregger” wordplay buried deep in their “It’s in there” ad theme? (what’s in there, a baby? so this means Prego is a pro-life food producer? will the High Sheriffs now insist that Amy or someone else write about the politics of pasta sauce?)

  • lupercal5

i love how a post about some televangelist devolves into a highly fascinating discussion of ragu and prego. :) couldn’t fault anyone

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

This far surpasses mere pasta sauce politics, Decon. There’s a much larger picture here. The politicization of food-stuffs is ubiquitous with cereal giant General Mills leading the charge for the pro-choice movement. What are the chances, though, of breaking this polarization? Any hope for an across-the-(supermarket)aisle compromise between Prego and Cheerios?

  • deconstructiva

…maybe Amy can relate to this. Karen said Amy is a divine cook. I wonder if she makes her own pasta sauce (recipe please?). I don’t since I’m lazy, but I usually take a jar of Prego or Target Market Pantry private label sauce and add extra spices, meat, veggies, etc. Paul Newman’s sauce is my fave and I stock up when it’s on sale.

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

Decon! Jarred sauce? As an Italian, and a fine chef, I take great offense at that? Do you need some simple sauce recipes?

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

*Too many question marks. Should read: I take great offense at that!

  • deconstructiva

…no, I’ve got ‘em, I’m just lazy. When I do make sauce I take quite awhile, cooking it down, and usually in a large pot to make several days worth, similar to soup (takes hours to boil bones and table scraps to get a good stock). So many foods, esp. soups, sauces, and dressings (fresh lemonade too) get better with “age”. I’ll bet Amy will agree.

  • deconstructiva

…and investors too, esp. social investing (environmental, religious causes, etc.). Here’s an interesting 2005 article – http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=12527
Amy, have you written before about social investing?

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

Are you referring to cooking down whole, fresh tomatoes? Otherwise, a marinara sauce can be quite quick, as can a simple meat sauce. Or, one of my favorite concoctions, a creamy, white sauce with vegetables and chicken. Takes 30 minutes, not including prep.

  • gysgt213

Yeah. I think Prego has higher standards.

  • deconstructiva

…exiled, if you want to, go ahead and post some recipes. Hopefully Amy will post more and others add in too.

    Pasta alla Exiled
    ~
    1.5 quarts heavy cream
    1 red onion
    garlic
    (1 or 2) zucchini
    (1 or 2) yellow squash
(1 each) red, green, and yellow bell peppers
    chicken broth
    boneless chicken breast
    Parmesan cheese
    2 lbs Penne rigate
    ~~
    1. Pre-cook chicken breast in olive oil, with salt, pepper, light lemon juice
    2. Sauté sliced onion, zucchini, squash, peppers and diced garlic in olive oil in large sauce pan, adding chicken broth as needed to retain a constant liquid base (not too much needed)
    3. Add half of heavy cream, stirring often for about 15 minutes
    4. Add sliced chicken breast and remainder of heavy cream
    5. Add salt, pepper, olive oil
    6. Cook until thick, add Parmesan cheese, stir, remove
    7. Pour over Penne pasta

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

And, Decon, this is certainly one of those better with “age” sauces. Reheated the next day, this sauce is incredible.

  • deconstructiva

Thank you, exiled! This recipe looks fabulous.
    .
I earlier made potato soup for dinner / tomorrow lunch. The big q. is what liquid to use: water, milk, chicken broth, or combo? Ideally, I prefer all-milk but it really tends to stick, so I use 1/2 water / milk: boil a huge pot of potatoes, take out and peel halfway done (easier this way), put back and cook until tender. Don’t drain; let water boil down to halfway. Take half out and mash ‘em, then put back in with carrot, onion, celery, and black pepper. Fill rest of pan with milk, reheat (don’t boil), and simmer down until desired, stir frequently. It’s even better the next day. For a real treat, melt cheese into it before serving and top with green onions and bacon bits.

As a proud graduate of Oral Roberts University, I’m sorry to hear of his passing but know he is with Jesus, the one Oral tried to serve and share with others with sincerity and compassion. While he was not perfect, his heart was for others. It’s a sad comment on our times when those who try to help others are scoffed and scorned while those who love only themselves are praised and idolized. In retrospect the 600 foot Jesus was way too small. I think Oral’s perspective is undergoing a rapid adjustment. So will ours one day.

I visited Scotland this summer and had haggis twice. It was quite tasty, similar to traditional Norwegian Christmas food. (We eat heavy food in the dark season.)

  • pittsburghpoet

I don’t know, Haseed. On the one hand you have the parable of the wheat and the tares: on the other, the dictum Do Not Cause One Of These Little Ones To Stumble. One manual from the first centuries of Christianity states that if anyone who seems to be in the spirit asks for money for himself, then that person’s testimony is worthless.

  • sacredh

When you tell people that God is going to kill you unless you send money to finance a university that you’ve named after yourself you lose a certain amount of credibility. I’ve always thought that modesty was for people who have nothing to brag about, but that was shameless self promotion. Oral was glorifying himself. And the tears? Even Glenn Beck would be ashamed of pulling a stunt like that. Maybe not.

Oral Roberts was the founding father of the prosperity gospel, and therefore, a thread discussing pasta sauces is an appropriate memorial. De mortuis nil nisi bonum dicendum est.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil, for I am one of the biggest son a b!tches around these parts. Amen.

  • bobell

Mrs. bobell makes her own marinara gravy (yes, they call it grave) from near-scratch, using canned stewed tomatoes and a whole bunch of spices. I don’t know the recipe, and she’s never written it down. Because Mr. bobell (moi) is on a very-low-sodium diet, she adds no salt, but she has found ways to compensate for that. She even has found a place where salt-free Italian sausage (made from buffalo meat) can be purchased. Put it all over zitis (yes, the plural) and it’s out of this world.
    .
Mr. bobell, on the other hand, makes his pasta sauce by mixing canned tomato sauce and tomato paste with pre-mixed Italian spices and extra garlic. The extra garlic compensates for the lack of salt. It’s anything but a gourmet experience, but it goes together in less time than is needed to get the water for the pasta boiling. (And yes, the pasta goes into the water with no salt.)
    .
Mrs. bobell cannot bring herself to eat my concoction, so I only make it when she isn’t going to be joining me for dinner. Frankly, I don’t like it all that much myself, but it’s hard enough finding salt-free tomato sauce and paste, and I’m just not going to knock myself out to improve it.
    .
As for Oral Roberts, I’m not a Christian and certainly do not share his religious views. But he seems to me to have been a good, sincere man trying to do his best, even if he occasionally got a bit far out there. It is perhaps unfair that a thread dedicated to him got hijacked by a discussion of pasta sauce and the like, but I would like to think this might have amused him.

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

    Cliff~
The secret actually is not in combining sauce (I assume you imply pre-packaged) with paste. Ideally, you would use fresh tomatoes and cook them down, however, this is extremely time consuming. An easier, and adequately tasty, alternative is to use canned whole tomatoes. They retain flavor better than canned diced or pureed tomatoes. You break down the whole tomatoes by hand as much as possible, then you cook with garlic, onion, various spices, olive oil, etc. The particular herbs and spices needed depend on whether it is a marinara (meatless) sauce or a meat sauce, and which meat you are using. You should also saute the onion, garlic, and spices in olive oil first for a meat sauce, but add them fresh to a marinara.
    ~
    Bobell~
Ziti is plural. Zito is singular.
