Loving The Joke

A correction published today by the Washington Post:

A Nov. 26 article in the District edition of Local Living incorrectly said a Public Enemy song declared 9/11 a joke. The song refers to 911, the emergency phone number.

Here is the story, as corrected. More importantly the video for “911 Is A Joke”–released in 1990 on the album Fear of a Black Planet–is posted after the jump.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

Did Wonkette return and is she posting under Michael Scherer’s name?
    .
There are millions of unemployed Americans, and Scherer should be asking the BHO admin why they aren’t reducing the number of work permits in order to get some of them employed.
    .
Instead, he plays a music video. OTOH, it’s better than one of Wonkette’s lolcats.

  • omorka

I would reply with the joke about the little girl who asked her father whether Paul McCartney was really in a band before Wings, but I’d be dating myself terribly.
    .
Still – way to fail pop culture history, there.

  • FlownOver

Unemployment’s down! Somebody hurry and blame Obama!

    Get serious.

  • stuartzechman

Actually, I applaud Scherer for this lovely piece of media criticism.

  • nflfoghorn

Possibly lost in this pseudo-controversy is that PE’s point was emergency services don’t get to many predominantly poor/black communities fast enough…if at all. Just as true near-2010 as it was in 1990.

Flav pre-VH1 idiot is a hoot.

  • rustyreturns

    Yes we should applaud stuart.
    .
Oh, is this in anyway the same as holding the media responsible for not reporting on the truth about the real cost of health care, and how the Democrats are not doing a damn thing about it in the current bill?
    .
The same as staying completely silent about the corruption and illegal tactics used by SEIU and ACORN?
    .
Perhaps it is the non-reporting on facts like the vast majority of Stimulus money is not scheduled to be spent until right before the 2010 and 2012 elections? While millions upon millions of workers remain unemployed, Obama like he did with the decision to send or not send troops to Afghanistan is doing virtually NOTHING about it?
    .
How Global Warming through leaked emails proves that Al Gore is nothing but a big fat LIAR. That Global Warming has been completely debunked, and is nothing more than trash science?

    .

The drop in the unemployment rate was almost certainly attributable primarily to measurement error. The 10.2 percent figure for October, a jump of 0.4 percentage points from September, exaggerated the true unemployment rate, so the change in November was simply a correction of this sampling error. The employment rate (EPOP) remained unchanged at 58.5 percent.

even better than Fear of a Black Planet is the film, “Fear of A Black Hat”. Unrelated to this post I know, but I pimp for that movie every time I can. Check it out, you won’t be disappointed. It’s the “Spinal Tap” of the 80s/early 90s rap & hip-hop world.

  • bobell

The McCartney joke has been updated. Now the father tells the child that the Beatles is the group McCartney was in before Wings, and she asks “Who’s Wings?”
    .
How long until the punch line is “Who’s Paul McCartney?”

An excellent commentary on the dark side of depolicing…

MSM and the politicians have never had a good track record when it comes it rock/rap. I remember back in 2000 watching a Bush rally on tv and being amazed that they were playing the Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again”. Somebody must have had a brainstorm because they did manage to turn it down before it got to the line “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”.

The Washington Post is the joke.

As this bit of stupidity, combined with their continued employment of George “Who Needs Science?” Will and William “Consistently Wrong About Every Prediction” Kristol, proves.
