State Dinner, Uh, Fashion

Desiree, who did this to you? Tell us. We will hunt that person down and hurt him or her.

UPDATE: Brooks Kraft offers us this photo gallery of what otherwise appears to have been a lovely evening.

UPDATE2: We believe we have identified the perpetrator.

Obama to Submit His Budget to Congress on Monday

President Barack Obama is pressing for investments in infrastructure while relying on familiar tax increases on the wealthy and corporations to claim progress on the federal deficit in his upcoming budget.

Romney: I Was A 'Severely Conservative' GovernorHuffPost Politics

    Robert F. Bukaty / AP

With Saturday Victories, Romney Retakes Control of the GOP Narrative

Mitt Romney, the perpetually questioned front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, had a rough week. Three embarrassing losses to Rick Santorum in Tuesday’s non-binding contests led to questions about Romney’s conservative bona fides just in time for GOP activists, gathering at their annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, to collectively grumble about it. But in two narrow, largely symbolic victories on Saturday, Romney reclaimed the headlines. Never mind the details. He was winning again.

Who is Desiree, and who really cares?

  • http://theblindspotsofgod.wordpress.com lawyermommy

She obviously still believes that her ex-boyfriend who designed this gown for her, understands why she broke up with him. HAHAHAHA

Nothing says hot like a shear dress over an apron.

  • 53_3

    Ouch. Hideous!
    .
    Spob? Spob!
    .
Where is spob? Where are the fashion police when you really need them?

  • deconstructiva

KT, I’ll go ahead and wish you a HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Yes, fashionistas are NOT happy campers over this pic. Was this made from a dinner table cloth? Remember the “Gone with the Wind” curtain dress – and Carol Burnett’s side-splitting parody of that scene?
    .
Let’s show ‘em something much better. Do YOU have a pic of you at your Clinton state dinner, KT?

  • 53_3

Whoever did this should be shot, stabbed, beaten, then hacked to bits. Then, the little bits should be stomped on until they are even littler bits. After that, the really little bits should be shot, stabbed and beaten again. Then, the really, really tiny bits left should be fed to sea lions to be excreted into the sea, to serve as food for the plankton!

  • 53_3

Yes. You’re right. Too much Douglas Adams…

  • southernbell49

    Oh dear.

Definitely a case of “When bad dresses happen to good people”….

  • kbanginmotown

    …and then the plankton…. ;)
    .
So long, and thanks for the turkey…

  • formerlyjames

OT, but KT, it appears that the high sheriffs have corrected the problems with safari. Thank them, thank them, thank them.

  • lupercal5

Desire’e Rogers is actually the most fashion-conscious person in D.C. Can’t defend that dress though

  • stuartzechman

    Your aristocracy at work:

Dah-lings, could you just be-lieve what she was wear-ing to the Hunt Ball last night!”
    .
“Yes, yes, it was just aw-ful! But dah-ling, it wasn’t the State Dinner we attended?”
    .
    “Oh dear, I’ve for-got-ten again! Simply dread-ful, wasn’t it?”

  • deconstructiva

This is a much better outfit than Desiree’s, although I’ll still bet KT topped everyone at her state dinner, let alone last night’s….

  • http://fourlegsrgood.wordpress.com fourlegsgood

I never did get comme des Garcons – that dress is HIDEOUS.

on the other hand, I loved that so many of the ladies wore saris or gowns with an indian influence. And wasn’t it nice to see so many brown faces in the crowd? Also, the room, gorgeous!

  • deconstructiva

Was it cold last night? Did she wear her quilt to keep warm?

  • cfukara

    Did what?
[You may be old - if you see a dress ...]

  • spob

A bad dress is a fashion faux pas–Michelle Obama’s garish cocktail dress at a posthumous MOH ceremony is a little more than that. Funny how the faux pas gets the ink.
    .
This post is in poor taste, in my opinion. Desiree is being held up to ridicule because of what, a difference in taste.

  • kathy

This is just baffling. So bad it looks like it’s photoshopped. Makes one a little nervous that she’s the social secretary.

  • deconstructiva

…spob, since you’re TIME’s fashion critic, could you compare Michelle’s cocktail dress to this quilt wrap in more detail, please?

  • tstar3

Oh Sweet Lord Did Spob just say “Desiree is being held up to ridicule because of what, a difference in taste” Well Jimmity Crickets what do you call your obsession with Michelle’s dress? Er, A difference in taste

Yet again Spob….SWING AND A MISS

And you never replied back to this picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse/3993796943/

I don’t think the Montis were as concerned about her dress as you

  • spob

Are you guys really this stupid? There’s a difference between what Desiree did, which is completely inoffensive and wearing something inappropriate for an occasion–like for example, showing up to a funeral in a revealing red dress.
    .
tstar3, what were they gonna do, be rude themselves? And the point is not whether they did take offense, but whether offense could have been taken.

  • shepherdwong

Reason #37 I’m glad not to be a woman. Black tux, blue suite, done.

  • freeinpa

Not a difference in taste… A Lack of

  • tstar3

Swing and a miss spob. Anybody can take offense to anything. I take offense to the communistic red splashing all over this page. I take offense that the letter r comes before z. I take offense at taking offense.

Can KT not take offense at the hideous nature of Ms. Rogers’ dress?

  • queencersei

Don’t forget your tie shepherd. A good suite can go very wrong when paired with a tacky tie.

  • http://twitter.com/ktumulty Karen Tumulty

The more I look at this, the more I realize it isn’t a dress at all. It’s a curtain over an apron over a hockey uniform.

  • hotbbq

Today is very, very, very sad day. I (sigh) agree with everything rusty said.

  • deconstructiva

…at least she removed the curtain rod (Carol Burnett didn’t). But it looked great in the window and she couldn’t resist. Venetian blinds would be tougher to wear.

  • grape_crush

Why is there a behind-the-scenes photograph from The Mummy Returns posted? Did Mrs. Rogers audition or something?

  • http://twitter.com/ktumulty Karen Tumulty

See update above. We have identified the perp:

  • dunedweller

it looks like she sprayed herself with adhesive and rolled around in the linen closet to see what stuck

  • deconstructiva

It could be worse – Lindsay Lohan could’ve designed that.
Is she still working at Ungaro?

  • bitterpill8

I am beginning to understand why the Pres has to bow “low”. The Emperor of Japan is short: no ifs, ands or buts : very short. The Indian PM is not even of medium height. The First Lady towers above the First Lady of India. She too is reaching down, as she did when speaking to Queen Elizabeth.

  • shepherdwong

    That’s reason #59 I married a woman.

  • stuartzechman

    Great catch, bitterpill8.

  • queencersei

Looking closer at the bottom of the dress, there seems to be a pocket or something. Is that really a pocket or just an extra swatch of cloth?

  • Paul-no not that one

I can never understand when it is okay or not okay to mock the way people look.
    .
Sometimes you can get scolded even if you didn’t actually mock.

  • palininatowel

I own cycling bib shorts that look better than that. But that’s what it reminded me of…

  • deconstructiva

…maybe spraying herself with glue then rolling around in glitter and sequins could’ve worked better. Some form-fitting outfits for women and men look sprayed or painted on. Why not go for it literally?

  • palininatowel

We’ve missed you, spob. Your weekly “Friday Outrage” seemed to have skipped Obama’s bow to the Japanese Emperor. That was a BIG one at Fox News.
    .
Unfortunately, their own polling showed that 67% didn’t mind Obama’s bow and that included 55% of Republicans.
    .
But the really funny part is that Fox News never discussed the results of their own poll on air.
    .
Sometimes, the real comedy comes in what’s NOT said…

  • cfukara

Hey guys, can you stop arguing for a moment and just give me her phone number?

  • southernbell49

Deconstructiva, thanks so much for the Carol Burnet link.

Some comedies bit you remember from childhood don’t stand up well when you rewatch them as an adult. Carol’s spuff on GWTW only gets funnier each time you see it.

  • kathy

Never buy clothes from somebody who looks this unhappy

  • gysgt213

I have neither the time or legal background to comment on that dre..er…garment.

  • dunedweller

when designer rei kawakubo began sketching for this garment, she was inspired by a current yet edgy symbol of american culture—the teabag

  • tstar3

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.TOO FUNNY. In all honesty sometimes I wonder if those teabaggers know we are laughing AT them and not with them.

  • Cliff

I think we all know that spob just wants to be the prettiest girl at the prom.

  • cfukara

Somehow we are afraid to ask the fashion commissar Spob what he wears.
For all we know, Spob may be in the fastness of the Amazon forests wearing nothing but American leather – and looking remotely civilized to the local damsels …

  • rustyreturns

“Is that really a pocket or just an extra swatch of cloth?”

    .
No, but I do think you are close, it is a removable little “sachet” to hold all the party favors after the “affair”.
    .
Let’s see, “how many Obama dollars can I squirrel away from the Obama stash”? Hmmmmmm

Beauty (in art, fashion, music,.. people, garb) lies in the eyes of the beholder.
And some go for mascara, corsets and stilletto.
And some love the burqa ….
Imagine that some go cuckoo over any trashy doodle signed “Picasso”!

  • deconstructiva

Is that the Obama daughters’ Secret WH Play Room behind Desiree? I’m guessing that from the short doors beyond that are too low for grownups to enter.

  • http://twitter.com/ktumulty Karen Tumulty

awesome news, commenters! high sheriffs have fixed the time glitch and your posts are now actually posting in real time, not an hour into the future.

  • dunedweller

KT for me it’s always been 3 hours into the future which is unfortunate since i already have trouble keeping up with y’all :)

  • deconstructiva

…beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when many eyes beheld say something is butt ugly, something’s wrong.
    .
IMHO, of course, I’d ask what does Desiree want her dress to do to make her look her best – highlight curves, slim the figure, look taller, show skin, blend in, stand out, etc.? It’s like a man wanting his tux to make him elegant, intimidating, muscular, or slim. This dress doesn’t appear to do anything. Kawakubo aims for “anti-fashion” but her pieces still should benefit the wearer somehow, yes?

  • deconstructiva

…thanks KT, although I was getting used to this real-world “FlashForward”. Being able to see 1 hour ahead had made my life pretty sweet lately.

  • shepherdwong

Imagine that some go cuckoo over any trashy doodle signed “Picasso”!”
    .
Or a book “by” Sarah Palin. I mean, really. At least Picasso could doodle.

  • shepherdwong

Great. It’s the only time I’ve been ahead of the game in years.

  • deconstructiva

…earlier when we could still see ahead, I saw the upcoming Obama turkey pardon pic. I hope KT will post a new “1000 words” for that. It was / is / will be / whatever a pretty cool photo.

  • http://twitter.com/ktumulty Karen Tumulty

decon: i was going to wait until this evening or tomorrow morning to post that one as a “happy thanksgiving” post. but for swamplanders who want a preview, here it is. i love the look on sasha’s face, which i have seen many, many times on my own kids’ faces when i am doing something they find slightly embarrassing:

Desiree! How many times have I told you not to let the guy who changes your spark plugs design your clothes?

  • sacredh

    The 2012 of fashion designs.

  • stuartzechman

    KT:

Please thank the IT staff on our behalf for their efforts, if you have a chance.

  • sacredh

I’ll bet a blind person would say the dress felt good.

  • sacredh

Dr. Frankenstein designs a gown. A little bit from this. A little bit from that.

  • sacredh

Women get away with everything. If a guy showed up wearing that, people would laugh in his face.

  • sacredh

    dunedweller FTW

  • sacredh

I fully support recycling. Now please return the rest of my rag bag from my garage.

  • sacredh

Seriously, why did she pick that gown when she could chosen the burlap bag?

  • sacredh

The female version of a plaid shirt and checkered golf pants.

  • sacredh

Our next gown is from the Stevie Wonder line.

  • sacredh

This should put to bed any doubt that Donnatella smokes crack.

  • cfukara

deconstructiva …beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when many eyes beheld say something is butt ugly, something’s wrong. ..

Maybe the ‘something’ or the ‘beholders’ are in the ‘wrong’ era or ‘wrong’ socio-cultural environment ..

Even then, not all hate “butt ugly”.[Behold, some people likes Sarah Palin.]

” .. I’d ask what does Desiree want her dress to do to make her look her best – highlight curves, slim the figure, look taller, show skin, blend in, stand out, etc.? “

In a different socio-cultural environment, all those attributes that you consider ‘desirables’ may be downright tacky and scandalous – and even get the subject condemned by Spob, the local fashion commissar to death by stoning in the local public square.

” .. Kawakubo aims for “anti-fashion” but her pieces still should benefit the wearer somehow, yes? ..”
    Perhaps.

But isn’t it more important for the wearer to personally like and feel comfortable in what she is wearing – peer pressure notwithstanding?

Shouldn’t we accommodate those who love the hijab/burqa or the stillettos wear them?

After all, the primary purpose of clothing is to protect us from the elements – and other considerations are secondary. And if the elements are conducive then, hey, we go butt naked ..[And if that vision scares you because you are out of shape - then you may be in a wrong place called America.]

  • abdullah69

You guys are being grossly unfair. This woman has obviously been in a really bad car crash. The fact that she made it out of the ICU to attend the dinner should be applauded. Even if she was unable to change her bandages.

  • sacredh

It reminds me of the Star Trek episode “The Cage”. Aliens saved the badly injured woman from a crash site but had no idea when they put her back together what a human should look like.

  • cfukara

Indeed, Desiree’s fashion has caused more of a buzz at the SWAMP than any other at the WH dinner. Even Spob can’t focus his darts on FOTUS.

Indeed Kawakubo was unknown to most of us a few hours ago. At times fashion designers go for the buzz. In that regard, she succeeded.

  • sacredh

It makes me wonder about the gowns she rejected.

  • sacredh

It could be a little payback for Hiroshima too.

  • 53_3

Oh, spob, we are not really that stupid. We just don’t think it was all that big a deal.
    .
    I will say this:
    .
If this is pretty much all you have to froth at the mouth over, then you really need either an anti rabies vaccination or a personal brain care specialist.
    .
    Chooze yer weapon…

  • sacredh

Desiree: Mirror, mirror on the wall…
    Mirror:

  • sacredh

Desiree: Wasn’t it nice of Mr. Beck and Mr. Hannity to send me this gown? They must want Barack to appear on Fox very badly indeed.

  • pierogielunaire

OK, I’m way late to this party, but I gotta say, Kawakubo did a much better job designing costumes for The Incredibles.

  • Cliff

Man, sacredh really was waiting all week for this.

  • sacredh

Too late Cinderella, it’s past midnight.

  • sacredh

7 straight midnights bring out the worst in me.

  • kathy

So is this the reason that bizarre couple did us the favor of exposing how sloppy the secret service protection is? Desiree was so distracted by this stoopid dress she just waved these guys through. It’s always best to feel self-confident when you have to turn people away.

  • sacredh

Desiree: This old thing? It’s just something I threw together.
    .
    Obviously.
