The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

“L is for Loser! And that’s you, there, you cowardly Republicans, crappin’ your drawers over Khalid Sheik Mohammed comin’ to NYC!”

  • spob

They’re just holding him to his word. You know, the oceans slowing their rise and the world beginning to cool . . . .
    .
“Eric Holder told me that there’s no speedy trial issue with trying KSM. I am a Con Law prof, and I agree with him.”

  • spob

And palininatowel, will there be extra security when KSM is tried? Answer: yes. Thus, fears of a terrorist incident would seem to be warranted . . . . but hey, nothing screams courage like risking other people’s lives . . . .

  • palininatowel

spob, how many other terrorists have been tried in NYC?

  • spob

“Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is innocent until proven guilty.”

  • spob

oh, ok palininatowel, let’s roll the dice some more . . . .
    .
are you seriously contending that a trial of KSM isn’t risky from a terrorism standpoint? Tell you what, let’s see Obama, Holder or any of the Dem senators supporting this nonsense will say that.

  • palininatowel

Congrats, spob! That’s the greatest deference I have ever seen you pay to our Constitution and our founding principles!
    .
You seem very afraid of the very values upon which our nation was founded…

  • palininatowel

spob, you didn’t answer the question.
    .
Have terrorism suspects been tried in NYC before?

  • spob

German soldiers posing as US servicemen were shot as spies during WWII. Last I checked, genius, the relevant portions of the Constitution hadn’t changed since then. I don’t think KSM deserves any more than that.

  • spob

the WTC guys, the African bombing guys and some others. So what? My answer presumed that. Sorry if that escaped you.

  • http://www.simonvinkenoog.nl/beeld/Yogi%20-%20Annelies%20Rigter.jpg yogi

What the hell? I thought we’re making fun of greenpeace, why do we care about where KSM is tried?

  • http://www.simonvinkenoog.nl/beeld/Yogi%20-%20Annelies%20Rigter.jpg yogi

    And now my contribution:

Can I see the documentation of where that mask was made?

  • palininatowel

Thanks, spob. And remember all the terrorist attacks during those trials?

  • spob

So let’s roll the dice when we don’t have to . . . . ok gotcha. Since security will be extra heavy to deal with the threat, it simply cannot be argued that the trial of KSM doesn’t up the risk.
    .
And that’s not even getting into the risks of another Lynne Stewart.

  • spob

But hey palininatowel, this decision was soooooo good that they announced it on a Friday when Obama’s not even in town.
    ,
By the way, did anyone else notice how our patriotic Obama didn’t defend the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. What a guy.

you’re such an imbecile. you’re saying that obama should go to Japan to boast about how much we western cowboys loved nuking the sh*t out of Japan? I mean you don’t even have to like diplomacy to understand that this serves no goal. The japs don’t even have an army. You neocons never cease to surprise people.

  • spob

Defending something is different than boasting about it.
    .
And lupercal, “japs” is considered a slur.

  • lupercal5

for the record, i do think bringing ksm slightly increases the risk of terrorism within 3 blocks of the event but for different reasons than your contusioned mind thinks. It’s not any different than when the president or a foreign official visits a locale. the higher profile.

  • http://www.simonvinkenoog.nl/beeld/Yogi%20-%20Annelies%20Rigter.jpg yogi

Defending mass murder…you seriously want the president to defend mass murder that took place 60+ years ago?

  • lupercal5

apologies to those offended. But it makes very little sense for “our patriotic Obama didn’t defend the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki”. Im frankly worried about the wiring of your brain

  • spob

yogi, it was not mass murder, it was the prosecution of a defensive war.

  • spob

Guys, here’s a question. Check out this from Eric “Marc Rich” Holder:
    .
“Holder said one factor in deciding to keep Nashiri’s case within the military justice system was that the attack targeted a U.S. warship docked in foreign territory, rather than a civilian target on American soil. Seventeen sailors were killed in the bombing.”
    .
Hmmmmmm. So let’s incentivize these terrorists to do their dirty work here in America. Now there’s an idea.

  • stuartzechman

    God, I f*cking hate Greenpeace.

  • cfukara

” .. the attack .. in foreign territory,..”

Quiz: The Big Boot of Imperialism

Q: A crime is committed in USA, and we prosecute it in our judicial system.
A crime is committed outside the USA – on foreign soil – we insist on prosecuting it in our judicial system.

    Discuss.

  • spob

    Food for thought:

    .
Given Holder’s lack of ethics, his political calculations are fair game.

  • cfukara

” .. it was the prosecution of a defensive war. ..

    So, it is OK.
    Oh, yes.
That reminds me that we are in Iraq fighting a defensive war. As someone said, we have to get them there – even while they are still toddlers – before they get us here later. Never mind that we have justification for being there – just the joy of imperial carnage and plunder …

Now, if someone tries to pull that defensive number on us …

  • spob
  • lupercal5

well since when was it accepted military warfare norm to nuke two entire towns full of thousands upon thousands of civilians? If any other country had done it, they would be tried on international courts. We weren’t because we came out victorious, we ended up the strongest nation on the planet right after the war, and no country on the planet had an appetite for years upon years of international wrangling when 90% of their territories were destroyed.
    .
A lot of people have tried to move on. We’ve found all kind of justifications to learn to live with ourselves. Please, don’t give me this ‘patriotic’ bullsh*t.

By the way, did anyone else notice how our patriotic Obama didn’t defend the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. What a guy.

Why would he or anyone defend it? It is indefensible, not just on moral grounds (specifically attacking a civilian population), but also on military grounds. The United States Strategic Bombing Survey filed on July 1st, 1946, concluded:

Based on a detailed investigation of all the facts, and supported by the testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the Survey’s opinion that certainly prior to 31 December 1945, and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.

There was never a good reason, real or imagined, to drop the atomic bombs. It was hastily done to justify the expenditure of the Manhattan Project and as political cover in case the public found out about atomic weapons after the war (to head off riots about why they weren’t used, etc). It is impossible to argue otherwise – unless you fall back on “they thought different back then” or “they did what they thought necessary” or whatever, which can easily be used to defend the Rape of Nanking and similar atrocities.
