This is devastating, especially given the extraordinary service and sacrifices the 1st Cavalry has already made, especially in Iraq. If you want to know more about this remarkable unit–and their community at Fort Hood–read this book.
One other thing: If it is true that Nadal Malik Hasan is a psychiatrist, as is being reported, then he has probably spent the past six years dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, brain injuries and the other psychological effects of this unnecessary war. There’s no way of knowing, yet, whether that experience led to this horror. But I’m sure this act will cause additional anguish, and confusion, for those who were being treated by the Major. How terribly sad.
