Where in the World Is Pervez Musharraf?

Turns out he’s on Capitol Hill! The General, as George W. Bush so famously called him, and Pakistani strong man is visiting the United States for an extended period of time. Eagle-eyed AFP correspondent Olivier Knox spotted him near Russell Senate Office Building this morning, coterie in tow.

What’s he doing here? Apparently briefing Republican members on the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan at the invitation of Indiana Rep. Steve Buyer, the top Republican on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Knox reports.

When asked about the meeting, Buyer’s office did not immediately return calls. The GOP leadership distanced themselves from it. “I don’t know much about it,” demurred Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Minority Leader John Boehner. Why play coy about meeting a former world leader? Well, this one happens to be wanted man at home. Any one know if the U.S. has extradition treaties with Pakistan? Hey, if Switzerland can send Roman Polanski back…

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know, until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, were the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, whom Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Thanks, Jay. Are you covering the big Senate PO hearing (or the big Senate po’ed hearing)? As for Musharraf, I hope he has better info and more street cred than Ahmed Chalabi did in his heyday. But why is he meeting with just Republicans? Is he trying to sell them timeshares?

  • FlownOver

I feel better having checked… “AFP” in this context is not Americans For Progress.

“They hold that making an example of Musharraaf would prevent others from so easily seizing power in the country through the use of force, and thereby serve the interests of Pakistan by bolstering its civilian forces.”

That comment from the article makes the most sense. It would be a big mistake not to make sure he takes responsibility for his actions. If this is not done, an unfortunate precedent will be created.

He was a military dictator and they are usually neither benevolent nor good leaders. Usually they are mercenary-like with no real interest in the needs of the country they govern.

Emmm By the way Mushraaff, where the heck is Osama Bin Laden??? Was it not part of the deal for him to assist with catching Bin Laden in the treacherous terrain familiar to his armed forces—where it was alleged Bin Laden was hiding?

To that last point, PM had to balance between the US government who wants him badly (not THAT badly under GWB) and Pakistanis who don’t want US to go into their (albeit lawless) territory and hunt down the man like we should have done all along. Assuming OBL’s alive, methinks either a drone or a disease will take him out more than people.

Musharraf is also here for a speaking tour – he will be in Pittsburgh tomorrow night:

    http://www.pittsburghspeakersseries.org/speaker1.htm

The best part of the speeches is usually the question and answer session that follows the prepared remarks. Anything you all think I should ask him?

If we arrest him, maybe they’ll arrest Osama bin Laden. It’s a trade I’m okay with.

Thanksfully, Kate Pickert is covering the mark up. Stay tuned, I’m sure she’ll post something soon.
As to Musharraf, I imagine the Dems were a little more sensitive to the bad PR image of getting briefed by a wanted, former dictator on policy.

YES, Stauurtzechman along with your very many aliases and extensively fabricated and disguised IP addresss– YOU and Rusty Returns among many many others ARE the same person.
I have spent valuable time and resources to verify and confirm over and over.

I am an ATTORNEY, aware of the enormity of the statements I make here and elsewhere on this matter and I do not make these claims without absolute certainty!! YOU are THE online fiend I am pursuing with a view to prosecuting– and like others of your ilk, you are a 21st century felon using the anonymity of the web and technology to commit heinous crimes. A coward targeting innocent women and families.

The reason why you continue to yap away here on line and elsewhere is because of the difficulty involved in rounding up technology savvy criminals like you and of course, the first amendment cover which creates bureaucracy and red tape in the cases like yours.

I like Tumulty’s writing, Newton Small, Klein, Sullivan and Swampland authors in general and despite the presence of disguised disgusting online criminals here and their unrelenting contrived personas– I will continue to read, enjoy and contribute my comments to this wonderful site.

    .
Doing so WILL label you a “racist ranting right-wingnut”. Geeze, how many times do I have to tell you that, eh?
    .
Obama has everything totally under control. I am sure that Ahmadenijad will cower and hide once Obama gets out his big club and beats him back into submission. Of course that will be after he finally decides to send enough troops into Afghanistan so that more of our military men and women are not decimated due to a lack of response on his part. And, after he bails out ACORN from all the terrible things which have fallen upon this esteemed “community organizing group of people”, which I am confident they have nothing but the best interests of the poor inner city folks at heart, as well as all the prostitues who are attempting to purchase homes for their “legitimate businesses”. We wouldn’t want a few prostitutes to go homeless now, would we?
    .
But, I am sure that Oprah and Obama are having one HELL of a great time on the tax payer’s dime, flying all over the world like the jet-setting elite!!
    .
Perhaps one day, Global Warming and the “carbon foot-print” that this trip will have on our world will not be such a big issue after Obama gets his Cap and Trade bill passed. I mean, trips like this are so desparately needed, rather than making a few phone calls ya know. :D

????? Because I took your Pseudonyms here and had them thoroughly investigated.

I have described you in clear terms as a criminal. As a Lawyer, I am held to a higher standard (for the most part) by the Justice system in cases like this.

Your simplistic explanations are nonsense. Your name is not Piper1– how asinine. That is quite evident. My passport does not have “Lawyer Mommy” as my legal name either. What a profound revelation??????????

I have made strong representations of clear Criminal Conduct which you feel a perverse need to address by attempting the impossible– to discredit cogent facts which are driving an ongoing investigation of violent online felons, felons I have identified here and elsewhere.

The judicial system exists for dissension like yours (if you have more than this rendition of simplistic statements which in reality disprove nothing).

As I indicated earlier, I am a Lawyer, and I do not make these direct and unequivocal statements of Criminal Conduct on this Public Forum lightly. I do so with Absolute Certainty.
