The topic of the day on all the cable nets seems to be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s emotional plea for calm during her regular weekly briefing yesterday.

Pelosi’s remarks come on the heels of former President Jimy Carter’s accusations that much of the outrage is racist — an inference from which the White House has spent most of the week trying to distance themselves.

Pelosi’s reference to the assassination of Harvey Milk immediately prompted criticism from Republican members.”“No longer content with criticizing concerned citizens for being ‘un-American,’ the Speaker is now likening genuine opposition to assassination,” said National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) in a statement. “Such insulting rhetoric not only undermines the credibility of her office, but it underscores the desperate attempt by her party to divert attention away from a failing agenda.”

Alas, instead of calming things down, her comments seemed to have only added to fuel to the fire.
