President Obama Accepts Rep. Joe Wilson’s Apology

At the end of a cabinet meeting today, President Obama took a couple questions from reporters. The first:

Q    Do you accept Wilson’s apology, sir?

THE PRESIDENT:  Yes, I do.  I’m a big believer that we all make mistakes.  He apologized quickly and without equivocation, and I’m appreciative of that.

That is right, to a point. Wilson apologized for his outburst, but in the same statement Wilson said that he still believes that Obama was spreading falsehoods about health reform’s benefits to illegal immigrants. “While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable,” is how Wilson put it. (Politifact has called Wilson claim that Obama lied “false.”)

Obama’s full remarks, including his openness for a phone call with Wilson, follows after the jump.

I do think that, as I said last night, we have to get to the point where we can have a conversation about big, important issues that matter to the American people without vitriol, without name-calling, without the assumption of the worst in other people’s motives.

We are all Americans; we all want to do best for our country.  We’ve got different ideas, but for the most part, we have the same aims, which is to make sure that people who work hard in this country and who act responsibly are able to get good jobs, good wages, raise their families, make sure those kids have a good education; that they are protected from misfortune or accident by having health care and retirement security in place; want to keep people safe — and that’s why our national security team is so important.

Our goals are generally the same, whether we’re Democrats or Republicans, and in fact, most Americans don’t even think about those labels all that much.  They are turned off when they see people using wild accusations, false claims, name-calling, sharply ideological approaches to solve problems.  They want pragmatism; they want people to stay focused on the job.  And I hope that some of the fever breaks a little bit.

The media can always be helpful by not giving all the attention to the loudest or shrillest voices, and try to stay a little bit more focused on the issues at hand.

Q    Will you talk with him if he decides to call you?

THE PRESIDENT:  Oh, I talk to everybody.

A Tale of Two Economies: Mitt Romney vs. Republican Governors

The great recession has left the state of Ohio battered and bruised–and Mitt Romney would have you believe it’s Barack Obama’s fault. Writing in the Cleveland Plain-Dealer on May 4, Romney advised Ohioans that the President has delivered them “paltry results,” and that their state is in need of “a fundamental change in direction.”

It’s part of a plot by Obama. He’s using a strategy of rationality in responding to a wingnut head case. Exactly the type of tactics I’d expect from a socialist terrorist from Kenyahawaiistan. My grandmother’s already dead so at least she’s safe from that predator.

  • spob

Did any Dems apologize for the boos at Bush’s SOTU in 2005? No. Would be helpful if Scherer pointed that out.
    .
And there’s a lot more to the story than Obama’s statement about illegals. First of all, they were in his 46 million Americans rhetoric. (Uh, how are illegal aliens “Americans”?). Second of all, is the statement “illegal aliens cannot work in America” truthful? Well, yes, but the reality is that they do work here. HR 3200 does little or nothing to ensure that illegals won’t be able to take advantage of the program.

Wilson is the poster boy for the Republican tack in dealing with the Healthcare plan. They are like wolverines involved in a desperate effort to derail the plan. By so doing, their hope is that the Obama Administration will be discredited.

I hope the Obama folks see this matter for what it really is. It is not just some errant response from an ill mannered man. It is a representation of the GOP position in the Healthcare reform issue.
It is high level politicking in the dirtiest manner possible. “Death Panels”, gimme a break.

As usual, President Obama is far more generous to his adversaries then they deserve.

He is a classy guy. They are not. They look small, petty and mean – because they are.

The contrast between him and them is huge. He tries to give people the benefit of the doubt. They assign sinister motives to the most benign actions – like simply being born. They lie and smear and fear-monger – nothing seems beneath them.

Of course, Obama stays cool, meanwhile his opponents always seem to practically go insane and make complete asses out of themselves.

  • spob

Obama is not a classy guy. He called some cop “stupid”–remember?

Is “typical white person” a classy remark?

Is commenting on Jessica Simpson’s weight “classy”?

Is calling the three GOP Senators “patriots” for supporting the “stimulus” classy?

Is his snide comment about Nancy Reagan classy?

Or how about his joke about the Special Olympics?

The facts are that people who are here illegally already get health care: they show up at emergency rooms and the hospitals pass that cost on to the rest of us.

You conservatives may not like this, but it is true. It is actually 100% true – a verifiable fact like the sky being blue, grass being green, and the sun rising in the East. (But facts, as we know, have a liberal bias.)

It is also true that the language in the bills prohibits illegal aliens from signing up for the insurance exchange. Yet those same illegal aliens are going to continue showing up in emergency rooms and getting care, and those costs are going to be passed to the rest of us.

It is ironic, I suppose, that it would be cheaper for all of us to actually provide illegal aliens with health care so that they aren’t using expensive emergency room services. Not doing so is just another missed opportunity to save us taxpayers several billion dollars a year.

  • rustyreturns

”The health care reform bill does not require the use of any verification database to determine eligibility for affordability credits. Likewise, this bill does not require any screening or self-attestation by applicants to determine eligibility for affordability credits. Instead, Section 246 bars illegal aliens from receiving affordability credits but contains no enforcement method to ensure compliance so as to preclude ineligible individuals from receiving that benefit.
Where enforcement is lacking, we can expect compliance to be similarly lacking. Accordingly, Section 246 will do nothing to actually preclude benefits from being improperly provided to illegal aliens.”

    .
Now I want to say I really do not care if illegal’s somehow get into the system, as long as they pay for it just like everyone else. But, I do think this is a powder keg ready to explode. Perhaps it will incite enough outrage among most Americans to finally come up with an illegal alien reform bill, ie: Immigration Reform.
    .
But Michael, using your own source, this is what they had to say:
    .

”FAIR has a point that illegal immigrants would likely be able to buy insurance on the national health insurance exchange. We don’t see anything in the bills that would hinder that. A Congressional Research Service report issued Aug. 25, 2009, confirmed our observation. The House bill “does not contain any restrictions on noncitzens participating in the Exchange—whether the noncitizens are legally or illegally present, or in the United States temporarily or permanently,” the report said.

But it’s worth pointing out that illegal immigrants participating in the exchange would be paying for their insurance like everyone else. That’s similar to the current system — we’re not aware of any particular restrictions that stop illegal immigrants from buying private insurance now. Under health care reform, illegal immigrants would be able to buy private insurance or the public option.

    .
Had Wilson simply called Obama a “Liar”, instead of saying “You lie”, is nothing more than the usual faux out-rage being put out there by media types like Michael, and the liberals.
    .
Obama deserved what he got. I think he will get a whole lot more when the average American understands what this bill clearly allows. Illegal’s will get healthcare through any Government program proposed by the Democrats.

  • spob

With respect to illegals . . . . why not simply pass a law that hospitals can report suspected illegals to the feds and have a mandatory deport rule. You are illegal, you show up for care, you get reported, and you get deported. No appeals, no nothing.

  • http://www.124monkeys.com Sean DeCoursey forgot his password

A whole lot of reasons actually.

    1) How does the hospital know a person is an illegal immigrant?

    2) What happens when a “false positive” occurs and a citizen is investigated/accosted/forced to provide papers?

    3) What happens where there is an outbreak of disease in immigrant communities because people are afraid to go to the hospital? Such outbreaks in communities denied/restricted from care tend to lead to big plagues/diseases that everybody, legal or not, gets.

Those are just the first few I can think of off the top of my head. It’s a bad, bad idea in practice.

  • shepherdwong

Feh. The entire Republican Congress disgraced themselves – just when you thought that was no longer possible – acting little better than petulant adolescents. Wilson’s rude lie was merely the punctuation mark.

  • queencersei

But meanwhile wouldn’t they still get medical treatment? I think Choska makes a valid point. Mandatory deportment doesn’t address the overall issue, that illigial or not, that person would recieve some type of treatment, regardless of their ability to pay.

  • ymmartin

Sean, regarding your 2nd point, just take a look here

Falsly deporting citizens happen alot more than we realize, there’s just no easy way to determine who is or isn’t as you say in your first point. Hey spob how do you feel about a single national identification system with a single id card for everyone hmm? How do you feel about big government then?

How does one prove one is a legal resident or a citizen?

I have a passport, but what percentage of citizens do? So if you want a way to assure that no illegal can get participate in the reformed health care system, how exactly would you do it?

I suppose some sort of national ID papers system could be implemented. It would take years to implement, wouldn’t it? There are many people who would be hard pressed to concretely prove their citizenship, many of them older, economically disadvantaged at the time of their births which may have taken place outside hospitals.

So perhaps those so concerned about the illegals should start a separate program for national citizenship papers. Trying to make legal residence a cornerstone of the health care debate seems obstructionist. If you really care, you’ll start advocating for citizenship papers right now.

Incidentally, does anything prevent an illegal resident from buying health insurance? Are there states where we prevent them from buying car insurance?

On another note, if elected politicians are asserting that the VA has implicit death panels and that this is both wrong and anticipatory of what we might expect from health care reform, shouldn’t they have proclaiming the perfidy of the VA from the rooftops for years instead of waiting?

I sometimes get frustrated when the wingnuts insist on changing the subject. When we’re trying to talk about health insurance reform, they would rather talk about immigration policy.

This time, however, they may be on to something. Could it be that they’ve discovered the secret of Obama’s tough new Healthcare-Immigration policy?

Illegal aliens buy health insurance — which is good for the economy. Then, when they show up for treatment, he sends them to the Obama Death Panels.

Aside from all the cogent responses above, especially the ones referring to medical care of illness…have you ever gone to a hospital for emergency care? Have you seen how enormous the physical spaces are in hospitals that contain paperwork for billing? Do we really want hospital staff in charge of determining our legal residency, too?
    .
We need immigration reform. And that’s not code for “kick all the foreigners (i.e., non-whites) out.” We need a comprehensive, sensible policy in place that balances our national security with our history as a nation of immigrants that celebrates diversity. Screaming about illegal immigrants sneaking in and getting health care–a very, very small percentage of the overall health care costs–is not comprehensive or sensible. It’s also not about health care.
    .
I cannot believe that this is the issue on which a U.S. Congressman further eroded his party’s credibility by acting like an a$shole on national television. Calling the president a liar–calling any speaker in a parliament setting a liar–effectively ends debate. “Well, the Dems booed Bush in his SOTU!” Did anyone stand up and call him a liar? And if someone had, can you honestly say that the Republicans would not have called for that person’s scalp?
    .
I don’t want Joe Wilson’s scalp. I just want people like him to stop entering politics unless they are going to shut up, listen, and then decide how they can best help their country. Joe Wilson’s choice, which is reflective of the GOP’s general attitude of late, does not help the country–only their popularity with a shrinking base.

Did everyone notice that suddenly after years of claiming 47 Million Uninsured Americans Obama dropped the number to 30 Million in his speech? This is consistent with what the GOP has been saying all along. Consistent with what FOX NEWS has said all along. So where did 17 Million people vanish to? Someone was lying and it wasn’t Congressman Wilson.

THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS THAT, he is an African American; the right wing republican conservatives and their followers just can’t ever see themselves taking orders from President Obama! Unfortunately in America, color does matter, ignorance and hatred is still a driving force with this particular group of people! THE HARDEST AND MOST DIFFICULT DECISION for these individuals, is to get past their own skin color, race ,superiority and self proclaimed ownership of this country along with their self righteous beliefs that GOD gave and deeded this country only to the white race; therefore, every other non white race in this country should feel inferior and grateful that we are allowed to remain in this country and allowed to have basic human rights or God given rights to have choices or decisions that will benefit not only one group of people but all people in this great country of ours that we call the United States of America! Agree Or DISAGREE, TRUTH WILL ALWAYS PREVAIL! and TIMES WILL CONTINUE TO CHANGE!
