We Knew It Was Ugly Out There…

But not THIS ugly.

This in from the AP:

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – California authorities say a clash between opponents and supporters of health care reform ended with one man biting off another man’s finger.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Frank O’Hanlon says about 100 people demonstrating in favor of health care reforms rallied Wednesday night on a street corner. One protester walked across the street to confront about 25 counter-demonstrators.

O’Hanlon says the man got into an argument and fist fight, during which he bit off the left pinky of a 65-year-old man who opposed health care reform.

A hospital spokeswoman says the man lost half the finger, but doctors reattached it and he was sent home the same night.

She says he had Medicare.

UPDATE: This observation from commenter stuartzechman:

Obviously we need more people with guns at these events.

Karen, just saw you talking to Andrea Mitchell. A lot of people blame her husband for destroying the economy. I think there was even some Time piece that let people vote on who was to blame and he was way up there.
Do you think it is a conflict of interest for her to report on economic matters? I think letting me report on the VA mental health system would be, since I have certain opinions of it and personal relationships gained via my wife that might interfere with my objectivity.

Ah, #16 – it was actually a heath care reform OPPONENT that came up and punched the man in the face – he in turn bit off they guys finger. How about getting some FACTS first – you do know what FACTS are, right? I have to ask because it’s questionable with those on the right these days.

“A blogger who witnessed the fight from the pro-reform side says that the finger-biter was provoked: ”

“The man in the orange shirt hit the pro-reform guy (I’m going to call him PR Guy just to keep the players straight). Hard. … He punched him in the face, knocked him to the ground and into that thruway. … He got up, tried to get back up on the curb, but Orange Shirt guy was in his face. Finger in his face, PR Guy standing, steps up to the curb, and there’s a scuffle. Orange shirt seemed to have PR Guy in a hold, but again, I was across the street, so won’t state that as absolute fact. Next thing I see is PR Guy’s hat being tossed into the street, both yelling at one another, then Orange shirt walks away, PR Guy picks up hat and crosses to our side. ”

“When he gets to our side, he tells a story in one sentence: “He punched me hard, straight in the face, so I bit his finger off.”

KT you pretend to respect these commenters but clearly any objective review of your posts would reveal that you use this blog as a means to draw attention to your dead tree articles, raise your profile in the echo chamber of cable news and provide comic relief when you’re bored. I understand why they rarely call you on it, I just hope they figure out that it’s because of the same thing they complain about constantly when they accuse reporters of being too close to their sources or that the villagers distort the news to maintain access — since that’s exactly why they ignore your obvious lack of respect for the truth. Frankly, you are worst than Mikey who carries water for the GOP or Joe whose obsessed in justifying his elitism, because you pretend to be one of the guys, a reporter with a smile — when in reality you are just as hard core and ruthless about furthering your career as the rest of them.

  • rustyreturns

I witnessed the fight too. It was the PR guy who started the fight. He walked over to the old guy in the orange shirt and started to mess with him. The PR guy pushed him and the old guy in the orange shirt threw a punch. Then the PR pervert guy bit his finger off and ran away.
    .

Hey, stupid, the problem is that you, like your moronic brethren, do not have a clue as to what any of the reform legislation contains.

He opposes a trillion dollar spending spree that will pose serious health care issues for him and everyone else.

First, we are talking about a public OPTION. Nobody is going to force Grandpa Medicare or any other wingnut to select it as their insurance option. If you can get better service and better rates from private insurers, knock yourselves out.

Second, a public OPTION would not be subsidized by the government. You enter into it by PAYING PREMIUMS, just like any other insurance policy.

Third, the only reason the legislation would theoretically cost any more — whether $1 more or $1T more — is because of the need to cover those who cannot afford premiums and would otherwise go uninsured. However, the choice of whether to cover people who can’t currently afford insurance exists independent of the public OPTION. If you want poor people to die from a lack of proper medical care, or middle class people to go bankrupt, rather than subsidizing them with tax dollars, you have the right to that opinion. But it has NOTHING to do with the public OPTION.

Fourth, put up or shut up. You say a public OPTION wouldn’t lower costs and improve service? Put it to the test. If you are right, people will simply not choose the public OPTION and will stick with BC/BS, etc. If you are wrong, America will save billions of dollars. Why are wingnuts so afraid of testing their beliefs?

Unfortunately wingnuts are too stupid to even grasp what is being proposed. Like Maria Bartoromo, who doesn’t understand that Medicare is for the elderly, you are simply ignorant of the most basic facts of the debate. Instead we get the braying of the willfully ignorant: Death Panels, Communism, and Medicare recipients assaulting those proposing Medicare for all.

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

Indeed, good point. While I am in favor of serious reform of our health-care system, it is disingenuous to suggest or imply, as the MSM continues to do, that the opposition are all wing-nut death panelists. There are many serious concerns and legitimate points to oppose with regard to the various proposals on reform. The majority of the town hall meetings have been largely civil and reasonable, merely representing opposing perspectives based in legitimate issues.
