Obama Remembers Kennedy

In a statement Wednesday morning on Martha’s Vineyard, President Obama spoke of his friend and supporter Ted Kennedy.

His seriousness of purpose was perpetually matched by humility, warmth and good cheer. He compassion — passionately battled others and do so peerlessly on the Senate floor for the causes that he held dear and yet still maintained warm friendships across party lines. And that’s one reason he became not only one of the greatest senators of our time, but one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy. His extraordinary life on this Earth has come to an end. And [the] extraordinary good that he did lives on. For his family, he was a guardian. For America, he was a defender of a dream.

Obama’s full statement after the jump.

I wanted to say a few words this morning about the passing of an extraordinary leader, Senator Edward Kennedy.

Over the past several years, I’ve had the honor to call Teddy a colleague, a counselor and a friend. And even though we have known this day was coming for some time now, we awaited it with no small amount of dread.

Since Teddy’s diagnosis last year we’ve saw the courage with which he battled his illness. And while these months have no doubt been difficult for him, they’ve also let him hear from people in every corner of our nation and from around the world just how much he meant to all of us.

His fight has given us the opportunity we were denied when his brothers John and Robert were taken from us: the blessing of time to say thank you and goodbye.

The outpouring of love, gratitude and fond memories to which we’ve all borne witness is a testament to the way this singular figure in American history touched so many lives. His ideas and ideals are stamped on scores of laws and reflected in millions of lives — in seniors who know new dignity; in families that know new opportunity; in children who know education’s promise; and in all who can pursue their dream in an America that is more equal and more just, including myself.

The Kennedy name is synonymous with the Democratic Party, and at times Ted was the target of partisan campaign attacks. But in the United States Senate, I can think of no one who engendered greater respect or affection from members of both sides of the aisle.

I spoke earlier this morning to Senator Kennedy’s beloved wife, Vicki, who was to the end such a wonderful source of encouragement and strength. Our thoughts and prayers are with her; his children, Kara, Edward and Patrick; his stepchildren, Curran and Caroline; the entire Kennedy family; decades worth of his staff; the people of Massachusetts; and all Americans, who, like us, loved Ted Kennedy.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

    .
This made me realize something remarkable. I was an oblivious first-grader the year JFK was shot and a somewhat more attentive 5th grader when we lost Bobby. While the events of the decade had a definite effect on my worldview, I’m suddenly struck by the fact that Obama is ~4 years younger than I am. While he can probably appreciate the effect that the wave of assassinations of the sixties had on people, he didn’t actually experience it in the way that adults in that era did.
    .
I don’t have any larger point, I just find it very interesting.

    Rest in Peace, Kennedy

From what I’m hearing on tv, he seemed to transcend partisanship. Not that he couldn’t be tough. He just didn’t resort to things becoming nasty or personal. He fought hard for the things that meant most to him, and gave all he had to the state of Massachusettes for many years.

Personally speaking, I was born some years after JFK and Bobby were murdered and born and grew up in a completely different country. I have little grasp on how the wave of assassinations affected people in the US and around the world but it did not and does not lessen the emotion you feel about them now. My mum (being a good old Indian mother) used to think that in a former life I was part of JFK’s clan in some way as I was obsessed by him growing up: while others in my class at around 10 years old were doing essays on whta they did during the holidays, I was writing about JFK – until I grew up a bit and moved onto Dr King, Gandhi and Biko. Growing up even more, I began to realise that Bobby was the real deal – more so than his brothers. His impromptu speech after the assassination of MLK has to be one of the most brilliant, effective and inspiring speeches ever to be made. Simply mindblowing. Obama has flashes of that and the potential to be much more.

What a touching statement. Truly describing this committed and hardworking Stateman. Dead but will not be forgotten. He leaves a long and strong legacy behind.

    RIP Sen. Kennedy.

Every vicious remark by the degenerate right-wing rabble makes it clear that we must continue the fight which Ted Kennedy fought so long and so bravely, to redeem this country from their hatred, their cowardice, their greed and their betrayal of America. One hero has fallen, but the rest of us, foot-soldiers that we are, can still take up his proud banner and move forward to make America a better, more honorable place, where justice rolls down like water, and the poor and the sick are raised up to stand with their fellow-citizens. Rest in peace, Senator. We shall not forget you, and we shall overcome.

It is likely that Edward Kennedy did something to improve the lives of the “haters” who cannot even give it a rest for a day of mourning

I would ask those people -
Did you benefit from the 2500 pieces of legislation this man wrote? from the 300 bills he wrote that became national law? From his involvement in strengthening social programs? Fairness for all?

How many of these sad and ignorant people are waliking away from-
    Public education
    Medicare
    Schip
    Civil Rights legislation
    Peace in Ireland
and so much more that likely only a fool cannot see beyond his own nose -

    RIP Senator Kennedy
Most people of good will and good conscience thank you and are grateful for your caring about us and our future

    The dream will live on
