More Nixon Tapes! More Nixon Tapes!

Regular readers of this space know that the Nixon tapes are regarded here in Swampland as the gift that keeps on giving. And while we haven’t yet had time to listen to any of the 154 hours that were released today, reporters who have are finding some gems. Such as this from NPR’s Nina Totenberg:

President Nixon reacted privately to the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision legalizing abortion by saying he believed some abortions were necessary, as in cases of rape or interracial mating.

And this exchange with the future Bush 41, as reported by CNN’s Elaine Quijano:

In February of 1973, President Nixon called future president and then-Republican National Committee chairman George H.W. Bush, and recounted a recent visit to the South Carolina state legislature.

“I noticed a couple of very attractive women, both of them Republicans, in the legislature,” Nixon told Bush. “I want you to be sure to emphasize to our people, God, let’s look for some… Understand, I don’t do it because I’m for women, but I’m doing it because I think maybe a woman might win someplace where a man might not… So have you got that in mind?”

Bush replies, “I’ll certainly keep it in mind.”

UPDATE: H/T Commenter sgwhite for this link to the NYT’s Charlie Savage’s report:

Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster “permissiveness,” and said that “it breaks the family.” But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases, such as interracial pregnancies.

“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,” he told an aide, before adding: “Or a rape.”

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

“interracial mating” indeed–guess my wife and I should abort our unborn child.

An interracial child was the same thing in his mind as a child from the result of rape? Nice. No one could accuse him of being a compassionate conservative.

In Tricky Dick’s defense, it’s beyond absurd to think such racist/sexist thought was exclusively republican during that era. I know many union dems from my own family who are or at least were living proof.
    ~
But per the discussion in another thread about “Oooh, look at the bad republican!” isn’t our discourse suffering from enough partisan shirt-vs-skin distractive sh!t w/out dredging up from 40 yrs. back, (however entertaining)? Or, KT, perhaps you’d have more than 4 comments on your HC post, if you weren’t clouding matters with all the fluff.

I actually think these flashbacks, while amusing, are also good historical reminders. It’s important to remember that Obama was elected just 36 years after Nixon made these blatantly racist and sexist comments. I don’t mean that in a “aren’t we all wonderful now?” way. The important lesson is how fast the unimaginable can become beautifully prosaic.
    .
It’s also important to remember that current racist and sexist rhetoric draws on a still very recent historical legacy of political oppression. We’re not so far removed from Nixon’s bigotry as to be complacent about, say, the racist coverage of Obama seen on Fox. And of course if we really had left all that behind then there wouldn’t be so much prejudice in the media and elsewhere.
    .
But apparently I should have been aborted so I’m probably clueless.

  • sacredh

Those were exciting days. The thread reminded me of an old comedy album I have. It’s David Frye’s, Richard Nixon: A Fantasy. It’s a take off on Watergate. Funny as hell and as mean spirited as you could ask for. I think I’ll burn it onto a cd. Thanks for the thread KT.

Umm, fabulistic observation KT, but isn’t that akin to the H-wood exec saying well, hell, we’d love to make Dr. Zhivago or Blood Meridian, but since The Hangover is going to get more business, we should just give the people more of that? Is your wing of the media equally calculating? Art vs. entertainment or strict bottom-line decisionmaking, I can get it coming out of H-wood, but the 4th estate!?
    ~
Also, I’m not that uptight. A blow-off post a day, fair enough. I love the 1000 words. And I laughed my arse of at the Hangover (like my memoirs come to life)! But 3 Sanford & son posts and counting!? We all know you do substantial, impassioned reporting, KT, and that of all the contributors here you should be able to insert some levity but I’m just asking for a little better ratio.
    ~
You have a lot of power over how the debate is framed–surely you can admit that this pap is distractive, throwing chum into shark strewn partisan waters. B/C my students may prefer to read Rowling or King (i.e. not be challenged), that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop throwing Henry V or Faulkner in their faces. And I love/grew up reading King, but IMO it’d be professional malpractice to teach him in a college lit course.

    Great album.

  • FlownOver

    KT & sacred:

Another source of contemporaneous comic relief, if you can find it: the National Lampoon Radio Hour’s Impeachment Day special. Highlights include Chevy Chase as a verbally flummoxed Sam Ervin, and a faux Billy Graham administering the official Swearing Out (“God damn you, Richard Nixon, get outta here!”)
Best tasteless bit: a White House press office announcement of the President’s movements – “Monday: nothing. Tuesday: nothing. Wednesday: good one, some blood.”

Pnnto: Billy Graham would have me on the floor every time I heard that album. The end where he tells Nixon to “F#@k off!” would reduce me to tears.
    .
FlownOver: Billy Graham made an “appearance” on both albums. I see I’m not the only one with a National Lampoon collection. It’s right next to the Monty Python albums.

Good point P-NNTO, but two caveats:
    -
    1) One of the reasons why is because of Spob’s constant trollery.
    -
    2) A few of the other Obama threads have generated as much traffic. More or less for the same reasons but still worth making a note of.
    -
Plus, it’s always fun to see KT woodshed one of us!
