Bizarre Political News of the Day

The whereabouts of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford are unknown … to his wife:

Sanford’s last known whereabouts had been near Atlanta because a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said. His office now knows where he is, Adams said.

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press earlier Monday her husband has been gone for several days and she did not know where.

She said she was not concerned.

The governor’s state and personal phones had been turned off and he had not responded to phone or text messages since at least the weekend, a source familiar with the situation said.

Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.

Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

UPDATE: You (and Mrs. Sanford) can follow the Governor on Twitter, where he continues to send out updates.

UPDATE2: I just received the following statement by email from Joel Sawyer, the Governor’s communications director:

The governor put in a lot of time during this last legislative session, and after the session winds down it’s not uncommon for him to go out of pocket for a few days at a time to clear his head. Obviously, that’s going to be somewhat out of the question this time given the attention this particular absence has gotten. Before leaving last week, he let staff know his whereabouts and that he’d be difficult to reach. Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions.

With Saturday Victories, Romney Retakes Control of the GOP Narrative

Mitt Romney, the perpetually questioned front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, had a rough week. Three embarrassing losses to Rick Santorum in Tuesday’s non-binding contests led to questions about Romney’s conservative bona fides just in time for GOP activists, gathering at their annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, to collectively grumble about it. But in two narrow, largely symbolic victories on Saturday, Romney reclaimed the headlines. Never mind the details. He was winning again.

Sanford needed time away from his kids on Fathers Day!?!?!
    _
well, this story does pretty much end his chances of becoming part of a national presidential ticket….

  • Deggjr

When Sanford’s party affiliation wasn’t part of the story, I correctly assumed he is a Republican.

  • queencersei

Those damn kids can be so annoying! If only every parent took his cue and drove for parts unknown for days at a time, without checking in…

  • stuartzechman

I kind of respect her for being comfortable with this.
    .
Not that it’s any of my business, of course…(ahem)

  • trifecta55

I need time away from the kids at times too. But, I tend to let my family know. Whacky for sure.

  • sacredh

“Jenny said the governor said he needed some time away from the children to write something.”
Unless it was a suicide note we’re all going to be terribly disappointed.

  • sacredh

KT: Thanks for this. I’m a little on edge so Mark is going to get hammered today.

  • 27rocketpants

I wonder if he saw Obama’s Father’s Day PSA yesterday, and if so, what he thought.

  • jcapan

Ah, the joys of Twitter: you too can send out updates from the Motel 6, reclining with your escort (gender neutral). Atlanta has, in my bachelor-partied estimation, some seedy spots. Naked beach volleyball among a few other only partially repressed memories.

  • sacredh

In an unrelated story, former senator Larry Craig was seen in South Carolina Friday night buying two sets of taps for shoes.

  • queencersei

Sanford wasn’t caught with a dead girl, so perhaps sacredh there is a live boy out there in Georgia somewhere with a story to tell and some video to back it up….

  • trifecta55

Kos twittered that Sanford is the first GOP’er who has finally decided to “go Gault”. Instapundit inspired one finally!

  • trifecta55

    The story has been updated.
    .
But Sanford’s office told the lieutenant governor’s office Monday afternoon that Sanford has been reached and he is fine, said Frank Adams, head of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s office on aging.
    .
Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford after he left the mansion Thursday in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation but declined to be identified.

  • sacredh

“Sanford has been reached and he is fine”
Are we sure that isn’t “Sanford has been reached around and he is fine?”

  • gysgt213

I hope he’s fine. I can’t stand the man’s politics and I don’t know him personally which can some times make you over look a lot of faults (when you know some one personally that is.) But I seriously hope this is just nothing, for his wife and kids sake.
    .
Gov. If it is just nothing, it just does not look good to just disappear on your family and your state.

  • fourlegsgood

Perhaps he’s off getting his thetans removed.
    .
Or he’s had a nervous breakdown over the latest polls.
    .
Or he’s just a jerk. Really, what a crazy story. He can’t tell his staff where he is but he can still tweet?

  • square1

Please tell me that that Op-Ed that he tweeted to wasn’t what was what he needed time away from the kids to write.
    .
I also found this interesting: “Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford after he left the mansion Thursday in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation but declined to be identified.”
    .
So, he drove off in a law enforcement SUV and then they didn’t know where he went?!? Is that SUV regularly issued for him to drive? Weird.

  • Mr. Nice Guy

I’m surprised our omnipotent government has figured out exactly where he is based on the trace-back of his tweets. I mean, don’t Verizon & AT&T take marching orders from our benevolent overlords?

Sux to be his family, though. Inconsiderate b00b.

  • bitterpill8

Oops. the Gov is in a Retreat: getting some kind of a transplant???? What is with the Republicans…maybe he is attending candidate school for the presidency. Is there an APB out????? I can’t be sympathetic. Sorry. This guy is a jerk.

  • opensourcepundits

Good luck with that Presidential run there buddy…

  • Mr. Nice Guy

  • sacredh

He disappears for days at at a time, doesn’t let his wife know where he is, skips out for Father’s Day, she’s not concerned…I can feel the love from here. If I pulled a stunt like that my wife would be wearing my danglies for earrings.

  • donovong

Do we have to take the useless jerkwad back if he decides to return? He is the biggest twit on the planet, now that W. has gone to pasture. And my governor to boot – what an A$$…

  • jcapan

    “And my governor to boot”
    ~
You have our sympathies–as someone who lived under Jeb’s rule for years, I feel your pain.

  • sacredh

This story is pretty good. It doesn’t matter what the truth is at this point, nobody is going to believe it anyway. What a dipsh!t. If he had any thoughts at all of running for higher office, that’s just gone now. Will the next fool please step up to the plate?

  • Friar Tuck

OK, so he’s been AWOL since Thursday, he didn’t say a thing about it to the Lt. Governor (not that I’d necessarily want Andre Bauer any where near the captain’s chair), and . . . and . . .
    .
Actually, nothing that happens around here surprises me any more. Mark Sanford is the Emperor of Bizarro World.
    .
I hope he isn’t lying in a back alley someplace, but he’s got some ‘splainin’ to do if and when he surfaces again.

I’ve got to stick up for Jeb here for a minute. I won’t deny the guy had his flaws, and the Schiavo mess is a black mark forever on his record, but I was deployed with the 124th INF out of Florida during OIF-1, and we did get great support out of the state government and the governors office while we were gone.

  • Mr. Nice Guy

sacred: the Repugs haven’t completely withered and died, yet, so there are plenty of fools left.

danglies for earrings. Oh that is _such_ a vivid image…

  • Mr. Nice Guy

“Out of pocket” since Thursday… Geez, that’s one heck of a bender. Even my alcoholic brother-in-law, Sir Osis of Liver, doesn’t disappear for that long.

  • Friar Tuck

    “Out of pocket . . .”
    .
Wow. Imagine how terminated for cause you’d be if you pulled a stunt like that even once. Apparently, this is something the guy does at fairly regular intervals.
    .
I want me some of that.

  • Friar Tuck

BTW, just how many people who comment here live in SC? Maybe we could meet at the Flying Saucer and get started on a beer card.

  • gysgt213

Okay that statement makes no sense. Aren’t there things only the gov has authority to do in that state and no one can friggin get in touch with him until he checks in? Besides that he has done it before? This is called leaving your post. He still works for and gets paid by the people of that state and this is pure B.S. and twitter is not an excuse for not showing up for work.

  • jcapan

Sean, re: Jebby goodness, I’d add his support of Everglades protection and at least his initial opposition to offshore drilling. But as a teacher, he was nothing short of a scourge–though a college instructor, I only got the flawed products of his policies. IMO, though I left shortly after his election, Crist is a far more moderate/defensible republican. One thing is certain, despite my attempts to delude myself for years–FL remains a solidly (overall) red state. Fortunately, I was in the blue SE region. 124th is based out of Tally right? Another solid blue dot on the map. Love it up there.

  • Mr. Nice Guy

terminated for cause Well, we here in NY _should_ fire the entire legislative branch, but likely nothing will happen. I almost wonder if it’s better that they’re not making laws.

  • trifecta55

Jeb can speak in complete sentences in English and Spanish to his credit. His brother is 0 for 2 on that score. It must tick him off to no end, that is dumb older brother screwed up the dynasty thing for him.

  • jcapan

Yes, Tri, Jeb is no dummy. Not nearly as popular as aw-shucks, big belt buckle, uncle cracker, brush clearing, barbershop joking, little brother, man o’ the people, but he’s no dummy. I honestly don’t know if he’d have been a worse pres. or not. At least he’d have had the intellect to combat Cheney, if he wished. Scarier yet, of course, would be their united efforts. I think the brand is perm. tarnished. Things may swing back the way of the GOP but they can’t be that dumb ….

He’s a little old to be crying “Road trip” and taking off for parts unknown, but I have to admit I think it’s pretty funny. The wife doesn’t matter, the kids don’t matter, the state doesn’t matter…he’s dealing with his midlife crisis in the best way possible. He just ran the hell away. I wonder if he saw his career in the rearview mirror?

Very impressive, is Mrs. S. Either they have one hell of a good relationship, or one hell of a bad. But deciding to skip out on Father’s day because you need some time away from the kids is a hoot.

[Someone else in his bed at 3AM? !!]

  • sacredh

Please God, don’t let him be off someplace sexting.

  • Mr. Nice Guy

Kathy, my wife and I have a pretty good deal. I work near NYC during the week, and come home to western NY (aka “Sh!thole, NY”) on the weekends. Our kid is almost mid-20′s and has a kid of his own, so we don’t have to worry about children missing out on their parents. My wife gets to play grand-ma during the week, and is fully occupied with various other activities like teaching, taking classes, etc., so she doesn’t miss my absence, I suspect. In any case, we don’t argue much, so it works out well.

Point being: not all couples need to be closely tethered for the relationship to work. On the other hand, if I went totally incommunicado for two or three days, yeah, even my wife would get worried.

  • sacredh

Mr. Nice Guy: But you’re not the governor of a state that had Presidential ambitions either. I agree about the not being tethered thing and still having a good relationship, but this is going on 5 days without him even contacting her. With the technology today, being hard to reach smells extremely fishy. As for his staff making decisions on a state level if he can’t be reached, that’s a WTF excuse if I ever heard one. Evidently this isn’t the first time he’s pulled this. It is however the last time he pulled it with his future political ambitions intact.

  • tilliswynette

  • choska

What is amazing is that, next month, Sanford will reappear on a non-Fox network television, or show up for an interview with Time, Newsweek, or the NY Times and this incident will never be raised.
    .
As always Its Okay If You Are A Republican (IOIYAAR) rules are in effect. There is NOTHING a Republican can say or do that will get him kicked off the Washington DC cocktail circuit. They can lie with absolute impunity, fail spectacularly, and The Washington Post will publish their op-eds and Chris Matthews will invite them on his show. See Wolfowitz, Paul and Gingrich, Newt.
    .
BTW, the Governor’s staff say he is “hiking the Appalachian Trail.” When I was a kid we used to call that going up the old dirt path. The high temp for Atlanta, GA, near the Southern terminus for the Appalachian Trail, was 96 degrees. That’s ambitious for an old guy.

  • sacredh

Any bets that the trip was on the Hershey highway instead of the old dirt path?

  • gysgt213

This still does not add up. I know the governor’s office has come up with a cover story of hiking, the media seems to have bought hook line and sinker, but this is the governor of a state here.
