Ridiculous

There are so many gross problems with this RNC video comparing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the James Bond character Pussy Galore that I don’t know where to begin. For those Republicans worried that attacks on Pelosi might backfire — this is exactly the kind of over-the-top sexist gambit they should be losing sleep over.

Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

“this is exactly the kind of over-the-top sexist gambit they should be losing sleep over.”
    .
I wish there was someone in the party who would lose sleep over it.

Which means Goldfinger would be … Cheney? Willing to kill US troops so the well-off can raid the treasury?
    .
    Yeah, that works.

Thanks for doing a post on this.
    .
The fact that a politically powerful 69-year-old mother of five can be reduced to a misogynistic caricature of her sexuality shows how serious a problem sexism is in politics. Once again it’s time to ask Gloria Steinem’s question about the 47-year-old mother of two and Illinois Senator’s campaign for President. It’s not just profoundly unfair, it’s also dangerous to push qualified women out of politics at a time of crisis when the best minds are needed.

We can stop watching Comedy Central. The republicans are far more fun to watch. It’s almost as if they go through a list of options and then choose whichever one does the most damage to their party. Is Kevorkian giving them advice?

  • kbanginmotown

    Sexism aside…
    .
…the opening scene of the ad is a picture of Pelosi through the barrel of a rifle with the sound of a gunshot!
    .
Does advocating the assassination of the 2nd person in line to the presidency not merit outrage?
    .
Or, does the absence of crosshairs on the speaker’s forehead absolve the GOP of this outrage?

  • kbanginmotown

yeah, yeah, outrage, outrage. It’s early.

  • sacredh

Just when you think they can’t get any crazier, they set the bar a little higher. You have to give them credit, they’re not even trying to pretend they’re sane anymore.

  • rose83

Just read Douthat’s column about the need for “sexual stigma” and permanent (yes, that’s right) ostracism of the “sexually irresponsible” who include the thrice-divorced and “pregnant starlets”.
    .
So now the Republican party doesn’t like divorced people. How is this going to affect their view of beloved St. Ronnie? Or is there some kind of three strikes rule?

  • sacredh

With all the people and different groups the republicans are saying they don’t want, could they become the party of old white right wingnut guys? If it didn’t make me look like a spastic having a seizure, I’d dance.

It’s interesting to contrast the RNC’s video with this quote from MS’s post on the Sotomayor pick for SCOTUS:
“I didn’t think he would go that radical,” Levey said. “There is so much to go after there. . . . But I think that’s what happens when you box yourself into a corner–say it has to be a Hispanic, it has to be a woman.”
    .
Boxed into a corner??? Why is anyone surprised that the gop is shrinking?

  • mrtoads

Oh, poo – they can be much more ridiculous than this. See, when you drive out anybody with a lick of sense, there are pretty much no limits to the idiocy that sounds reasonable.

  • billiecat

Set aside the stupidity of the ad, it’s not likely to be very effective. I have no idea what they’re trying to say here – that Pelosi is James Bond in pearls? That Obama has cut her adrift? That she out to be gold-plated? What? What are you saying, GOP? I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND YOU ANYMORE!
    .
    Oh, my head hurts.

  • jarais

Ew. I’m expecting a RNC video featuring Sonia Sotomayor in a sombrero any day now.

Lawd I hope so. Insult Hispanics in general and Sotomayor’s culture at the same time. Beautimous.
