Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

For all those who feel charitable and want to help, Fisher House is a wonderful thing. Fisher House is basically a “Ronald McDonald House” for military families.

Thank you to all the veterans who have served. We are forever in your debt.

May God bless our troops, and keep them from harm’s way. Please also see this “National Purple Heart Hall of Honor”.
    .
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor commemorates the extraordinary sacrifices of America’s servicemen and servicewomen who were killed or wounded in combat. The mission of the Hall of Honor is to collect and preserve the stories of Purple Heart recipients from all branches of service and across generations to ensure that all recipients are represented.
    .
The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration still in use and was the first to honor the common soldier. It was initially created as the Badge of Military Merit by the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, General George Washington. A leader who understood the importance of the individual soldier, Washington vowed “to make it the most agreeable part of [his] duty to study merit, and reward the brave and deserving.” His appreciation for the common soldier impelled him to recognize outstanding valor and merit by granting a commission or an advance in rank to deserving individuals. However, towards the end of the Revolutionary War, he was ordered by the Continental Congress to cease doing so because of the lack of available funds.

But first and foremost, Memorial Day is a day to recognize those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to our country. Their life. This sacrifice, we should be reminded, was to continue giving the rest of us the ability to live in freedom, provide us with liberty from tyranny, and justice for all American citizens.

God bless our fine service men and women.

For the Twitter-oriented, here’s a link to TweetToRemind, which allows you to donate just $5.25 (come on, you can do $5.25, right?) to Remind.org, an organization devoted to assisting our servicepeople as they return home from duty.

  • stuartzechman

OK, I did $25 –but you don’t have to! $5.25 from everyone would be just fine!

    Thanks stuart!

Romans 14:7 – “For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone.”
    .
We thank you, Lord, for those who have returned from battle and are alive today, with whom we can share fellowship once again. We give thanks also for the service of, and the price paid by, those who gave their lives for us. We pray for the safety of those who remain in the field, trusting in Your mercy and compassion for all your good creation.

The clueless, anti-military socialist asserts in the video dutifully posted video by Time magazine: “”Too often in recent years and decades… We have failed to give [the U.S. military] the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve.”

    -

“We have failed to give [the U.S. military] the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve”? “We”? “We”?

    -

Can we find a single, adoring useful idiot in Obama’s public relations department (i.e., the White House press corps) to ask Obama to identify, by name, the people who Obama alleges “failed to give [the U.S. military] the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve”? We know that Obama and Michelle “For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country” Obama have failed to give the U.S. military the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve, but maybe someone can ask him to identify the other people who he alleges have “failed” to support the U.S. military.

  • Friar Tuck

Wow, textee, that was really appropriate. I guess no memorial is complete without ugly graffiti, is it? Way to contribute to the occasion, tiger!

  • dunedweller

Unconditionally, thank you for your service. L.I.P. / R.I.P.

  • http://smoothlikeremy.blogspot.com/ sgwhiteinfla

Thanks to all the military men and women and their families for all of their sacrifices and efforts keeping our country safe. And RIP to those who never made it back home.

  • 53_3

I care about who you are.
I care about where you serve.
I care about the dangers you face.
I care about why you must serve.
I care about who you want to become after serving.
    .
Thanks to all of you for your service.

Anyone know of one that uses e-checks? SZ’s requires either paypal or a credit card.

  • somepeoplelikeit

Often the intelligence of HOW to fight is not near as important as the wisdom of WHEN to fight. Someone has proven themselves very unwise here today.
    .
In addition to the good wishes for our service men/women I also wish for wisdom from our leaders, our might should be used justly and judiciously.
    .
Have a great holiday weekend everybody!!!

  • formerlyjames

I join others in expressing gratitude and rememberence of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and homage to our country.

  • spob

And don’t forget to teach your kids the meaning of Memorial Day . . . .

  • rubypanther

    53_,

    Paypal should allow an e-check.

  • spob

Guys, I was going to join in saying that textee’s comments were ill-advised on this thread, but given the Sainted One’s comments, I’d say that he’s right. Obama said:
    .
“And yet, all too often in recent years and decades, we, as a nation, have failed to live up to that responsibility. We have failed to give them the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve. That is a betrayal of the sacred trust that America has with all who wear – and all who have worn – the proud uniform of our country.”
    .
Can’t this clown give the politicking a rest on Memorial Day?

  • http://smoothlikeremy.blogspot.com/ sgwhiteinfla

They just can’t help themselves, even for one day.

  • yutsano

Prove he’s wrong Spob and I’ll call it politicking. Otherwise stuff it, you both just want an excuse to bash Obama for whatever reason you can bother to think of.

  • yutsano

They just can’t help themselves, even for one day.
    -
I’m hoping and praying that KT or someone throws us another thread so this doesn’t turn into an open one. I have my own concerns on this Memorial Day, I don’t need ashhats like Spob and Textee using a day of remembrance to tear into their President.

  • textee

Someone, please clue in the clueless, thoroughly unqualified community organizer and the fools who voted for him. Memorial Day is NOT a day to honor veterans. We already have a day for that. It’s called Veterans Day. Memorial Day is for honoring those service members killed in the line of duty.

  • Friar Tuck

“Memorial Day is NOT a day to honor veterans.”
    .
Fine, textee. Go dishonor some veterans this weekend, if that’s what floats your boat.

  • Friar Tuck

And while you’re at it, textee, please remember not to pray for any soldiers in harm’s way until whatever day is set aside for that.

  • trifecta55

As a veteran, who works with veterans, may I say that textee should shut the piehole. Hang around a VA and listen to some stories.
    .
To the sane people here, let us not forget all those coming back missing limbs, suffering PTSD, or traumatic brain injury. Honoring their service by addressing their physical and mental health needs is something we will still be addressing 50 years from now. The price some pay is staggering.
    .
Let us honor them all, as we pay tribute to the fallen.

  • sacredh

trifecta55: Thank you for the post and your service.

“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

  • flacidcasual

In the UK Memorial Day is held on the anniversary of the Armistice for WWI. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. As a child I would attend a service every year at the war memorial in the village where I grew up. On that war memorial were the names of all the people from my village who had fought and fallen in the first and second world wars. I learned from a good friend of mine who still lives in the village that at the end of last year another name was added to that memorial.
    .
I will personally be observing Remembrance Day on the 11th November, but I wish all veterans, serving personnel and their families the best on this holiday weekend.

  • Karen Tumulty

I put up another thread–theme: shameless product placement–for those of you who wanted one. Happy holiday weekend to all.

Grazie mille KT! Hopefully this thread will return to memories of those who sacrificed and those who still are sacrificing. And thanks for indulging us Swampcritters!

Well I guess I should do some “clueing”. I believe that you and spob are absolutely incorrect for calling Obama out on whether this is or isn’t an appropriate holiday to honor our military men or women, either alive or dead. I like to go to the parades and other functions whereby the honor guards and other military march in parades to also encourage them to show their pride in our country. To applaud as they march by, and salute them as a veteran in acknowledgement of the sacrifices they give to this great country of ours.
    .
Personally I believe we do not show enough respect or gratitude to both our living as well as our soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Or, those who are just one step from giving the ultimate sacrifice. I personally think it shows them great respect when we include them on this special day. That we care enough for what they do everyday to say “Thank You!!”.
    .
Thank you again to all of the veterans, active duty and especially to those whom we memorialize on this day. I say thank you, thank you for my freedom and the priviledge you have given me to continue to live in this great country of ours.
