Audacity of Dope: Tales of a Toking Teenage Obama

We knew Barack Obama smoked weed in high school because he wrote about it in his books. What we didn’t know until Buzzfeed posted these choice nuggets (I’m so sorry) from David Maraniss’s new book on the President’s younger years, is the giggle-worthy details of his “Choom Gang” lifestyle, which are right out of a buddy stoner flick. Obama and his friends drove around the lush Hawaii countryside, hot-boxing their VW bus and re-upping with a long-haired pizza-tossing dealer named Ray, who Obama thanked in his yearbook “for all the good times.”

Obama Stumbles? Why the President’s Right to Talk About Bain

The meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn’t very much, really–except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital and that Obama’s fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn’t getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously–outrageously!–tried to regulate the bankers who did so much to crash the economy in 2008. The handful of Democrats squawking are people who either (a) get money from private equity firms or (b) have retired and joined Mondo Casino. But there is another side to this story:

Steele should heed the advice of Newt. It is that simple.

  • FlownOver

Everyone in the Republican Party should listen to everyone else in the Republican party. Because that’s been so successful lately. Also.

  • Paul-no not that one

Great insight by the intellectual leader of the republican party.

  • Friar Tuck

Hm. Not nearly as apocalyptic as the headline would have led me to believe. I was expecting Newt to produce long forks and a fondue pot, or something.

  • jarais

Wow. Face of the GOP future here.

  • http://smoothlikeremy.blogspot.com/ sgwhiteinfla

When Newt describes the RNC members it sounds more like he is describing himself.

  • Paul-no not that one

Ha SG, I was thinking the same thing- projection.

  • queencersei

The face of the GOP’s future is the face of its past? What does that tell us?

  • http://smoothlikeremy.blogspot.com/ sgwhiteinfla

Of course Virginia Foxx’s speech yesterday is also why God Invented CSPAN
    .

    .
So we call all see what kind of a sorry ass person she is.

  • Paul-no not that one

Rep Foxx may be right. That Westboro Baptist Church really hates victims of robbery. They even picket their funerals.

  • http://smoothlikeremy.blogspot.com/ sgwhiteinfla

    PNNTO
    .
I know right. They even picket the funerals of soldiers coming home from war to voice their opposition to robbery. They also talk a lot about how God is going to punish our country because we tolerate robbers.

  • sacredh

When is the republican party going to purify itself and get rid of Snowe and Collins? As soon as they do that they can change their theme song to an old number by Slade “Mama, We’re All Crazy Now”.

  • logicforbipeds

Oh Newt. One out of every ten times you open your mouth you actually make sense.

  • rmrd

Some of my Republican friends are encouraged by polling numbers that they have seen on Mike Huckabee. They worry that the country is too narrow-minded to elect a Baptist preacher.

  • rustyreturns

    .
I suppose when a swampland wacko like sgwhite posts another video of a wacked out Republican from NC in the same blog post about a C-span is his feeble attempt at guilt by association. Having a video of the Rep from NC on the same video by Karen Tumulty on Newt Gingrich.
    .
I guess posting Rev Wright aligned with Obama, and how Obama hates his country because he is demonizing everything that is American is also wrong?

  • sacredh

“They worry that the country is too narrow-minded to elect a Baptist preacher”
I have friends like that too. It doesn’t even bother them that Huckabee said we should change our Constitution to more closely reflect the teachings of the Bible. I honestly do cherish my friends, but Jesus F*%#ing Christ they’re retarded! They’re also encouraged by polling numbers, shooting stars, tea leaves, runes, tarot cards, chicken guts read by the light of the full moon…you name it. They’ll hitch their wagons to anything that has even the craziest chance of getting Obama out of office. If they thought they could get away with digging Reagan up and running his corpse for President, they’d do it.

    Hanging my head but laughing.

  • dunedweller

President Obama, showed immense restraint when explaining the way republican senators argue and obstruct while the country slips deeper into depression, war and illness. I am continually amazed that that their party is considered worthy of a platform for opinion. They are so far out of touch, and the MSM continues to ask them what they would do. I guess in some ways that gives the public insight into what a crazy person would do (and therefore what not to do), but overall I think it just makes it more difficult for the public to absorb the important, factual information.

  • FlownOver

Rep. Foxx’s evil blathering, coupled with Rep. Bachmann’s latest doozy (the “Hoot-Smalley” tariff, allegedly enacted by FDR in 1930) could make up a pretty good argument for a congressional competency exam. North Carolina has one for its ninth graders – why not for its lawmakers?

  • afguy

. . . while the country slips deeper into depression, war and illness
    .
Somehow, I read that as “while the country slips deeper into depression, war and silliness”.
    .
Does that classify as a “mental Freudian Slip”?

  • Karen Tumulty

    pluk: ack. will fix.

  • rmrd

    rusty:
    .
Rev Wright was addressed. The public does not connect Obama to Rev Wright.
    .
On the other hand one can connect the GOP to Ann Coulter and her attacks on World Trade Center victims’ wives, Rep. Michelle Bachmann to a host of misstatements, Michael Steele to inept management of the RNC, and now Rep Foxx to an attack on the victim of a hate crime. Lastly, we have of image of Conservative Arlen Specter being purged from the GOP.
    .
Fewer people are willing to label themselves as Republicans. rusty, you are addressing a small portion of the US population. In fact, you probably have more support among traitors who would secede from the US, than from patriotic American citizens.
    .
You have written that you want the country to fall apart fiscally. You also expressed a desire to see Americans die of a viral illness because you disagree with health care policy
    .
    Here are your words:
    .
…….I wonder how far this administration will go while thousands of people die, just to get a good point across on a National Health care agenda?
    .
…….I just wonder how much of this is really hype, and to further the Obama health care agenda? Could they have unleashed a pandemic, just to prove a point? I wouldn’t put it past them all.
    .
…….I just hope that if they are playing with fire, they get burnt and burnt really bad with it.
    .
    rusty, you are a wingnut.

  • dunedweller

afguy: I like your version better.

  • afguy

    rmrd,
    .
Tread lightly . . . you are trying to reason with a certifiable troll (a noble gesture, but a total waste of keystrokes, to which others, including myself, can attest).

    .
I really don’t expect rational behavior from the individual. I am just surprised. It’s similar to the sensation that I got when a medical student at Boston University was arrested for murder and the evidence increasingly suggested guilty. (The student is accused, not guilty).
    .
The mental gymnastics that have be occurring to hold the stated beliefs is astonishing.

  • afguy

The mental gymnastics that have be occurring to hold the stated beliefs is astonishing.
    .
    rmrd,
    .
No gymnastics required on his part – just a rigid adherence to ideology. When any attempts at logical support of his position fail, you will be subjected to insults and inflammatory labels.
    .
Like I said, what you are trying is admirable. It just doesn’t work like it should and it will not be for lack of effort on your part.

  • vastwastelander

FlownOver – I really, really, REALLY hope you’re joking about “Hoot-Smalley.” The alternative . . . makes me very sad.

  • afguy

The alternative . . . makes me very sad.
    .
    vastwastelander,
    .
Here’s a “virtual” Kleenex . . . the clueless twit said exactly what FlownOver said she did.

  • rmrd

You would think that Rep Fox would fact check before going on the floor of the House to falsely accuse a murder victim of a crime. According to Olbermann, Mathew Shepherd’s other was in the chambers at the time of Rep Foxx’s utterance.
    .
Bachmann is so unaware of history that she first Swine flu epidemic was incorrectly said to occur during the Carter administration, rather than that of Gerald Ford. Bachmann then blames a tariff bill written by two Republicans and signed by a Republican President on FDR.
    .
Conservatives in general have the facts of the Depression wrong.
    .
Even Conservative “intellectuals” get things wrong, or just make stuff up. William Kristol had three editorial corrections while at the NYT. George Will of the WaPo cherry-picks climate change data. Both remain employed in MSM.
    .
Has Rep Foxx apologized to the Shepherd family? Have Bachmann, Kristol , or Will apologized or attempted to correct their errors?

  • vastwastelander

afguy – Wow. I mean, wow.

    vastwastelander,

I started to write something snarky about your having ethics and intelligence making you unqualified to serve but, as long as there are those like Sheldon Whitehouse there, there’s still hope . . .
