Fox Snubs Obama for “Lie to Me”

So reports Jim Poniewozik, who also wonders:

It will if nothing else be an interesting test, both of the drawing power of the President and of network TV. Will Lie to Me get an uptick in viewers as a result, or in an era with so many cable options, does one more channel airing something other than a press conference make little difference? As for Obama, it spells out the importance of making sure his TV appearances are spread-out and compelling enough to have impact: if he maintains his ratings, the numbers will speak loudly, and if they drop precipitously, the other networks may want to join Fox next time.

Then again, these are the same programming geniuses who cancelled “Arrested Development.”

Romney Defends Bain Record, Hits Obama on Economy: ‘He Just Doesn’t Have a Clue’

Mitt Romney lashed President Obama’s economic stewardship in an interview with TIME’s Mark Halperin on Wednesday, deflecting attacks on his years as a private equity executive and laying out how he hopes to take control of the economy as soon as he’s sworn in, should he defeat Obama in November.

Mother of Mitt: How Lenore Romney’s Failed Campaign Shaped the Presumptive Republican Nominee

This week’s TIME cover story, “The Mother of the Mitt Campaign,” tells the tale of how Lenore Romney’s 1970 run for U.S. Senate may have made a bigger impression on the Republican presidential candidate than his years spent as the son of a governor. Mitt’s father lost his own presidential bid, but it was the lessons from his mother’s loss that are more instructive as Romney enters the campaign stretch.

That FOX won’t air the comments of our commander in chief at a time of war is an insult to the president and all of America. Where is an apology?

    http://www.political-buzz.com/

  • lamh31

I’m sorry, but does anyone actually watch “Lie To Me”. I don’t know anyone who does.

  • http://phd9.blogspot.com Paul Dirks

Considering how often Bush abused prime-time news conferences as simply another opportunity to rehash talking points, its not surprising that a network might choose to look another way this time out.
    .
I don’t attach too much importance over it being Fox and Obama. If they can draw better ratings by ignoring the President, more power to them.

  • spinmd

At what point does Fox News lose credibility for clearly political acts such as this?

  • FlownOver

So they’re just shifting Lie to Me from its 24-hour-a-day run on FockSnooze over to the affiliate “entertainment” channel for this one hour or so?

  • incandenzah

    I like the anti-FOX TV-guide optics, though:

    Channel 1 (NBC): Obama Presser
    Channel 2 (CBS): Obama Presser
    Channel 3 (ABC): Obama Presser
    Channel 4 (PBS): Obama Presser
Channel 5 (FOX): Lie to Me

  • lamh31

Maybe the news division of Fox is finally bleeding over onto the entertainment division. Or Fox is trying to grab ahold of that 26% who can’t stand Obama.

  • http://smoothlikeremy.blogspot.com/ sgwhiteinfla

They just pretty much ensured that Lie To Me will have its worst ratings ever. If I worked on that show Id be PISSED!

  • formerlyjames

Never even heard of Lie to Me. But, it is an outrageous insult to the Simpsons/Family Guy channel to link them to Faux Neus. I don’t know if they will air it, but I am hoping to watch on C-span without the puffy hair talking suits telling me what I heard. On C-span, every nutcase in American will wait on the line on their own dime (nutcases are not known for financial frugality) to tell me what I heard.

  • Karen Tumulty

Actually, I had never heard of “Lie to Me” either. As a TV series, I mean.

  • formerlyjames

Yeah, KT, I mean on the teevee. Only too familiar in general, sadly.

  • bitterpill8

Lie To me: how appropriately FOX. They lie to us and they are asking “Lie to me”. Dittohead Central must be in a tizzy. I have never heard of this show but lying to me is Fox News’ aim.

  • formerlyjames

bitterpill, again, please don’t confuse Fox channel with Faux Neus. Same guy owns both. He just knows how to make money big time. Burn both ends of the candle at once.

  • Dee in Columbia MD

come on you’ll I happen to like the show and I’m surely not going to penalize the cast and crew, that is sometime a local one when they film in Washington DC where the show is set. But I will DVR it because its what I do anyway because its on the same time as Olbermann.
    .
This was obviously somebody’s bright idea of a way to get exposure for a show with weaker ratings and if it works good and if not, I don’t think it’s going to make or break Obama, and I’m pretty sure they also did the same thing to Bush doe abother show I liked but was eventually cancelled anyway.

  • bitterpill8

Formerlyjames: point taken. But Fox has a say in who channels through one of its corporate manifestations. You make a distinction. I note that. But the guys giving the finger are one and the same. For them its dollars in and dollars out, and a bit of politics thrown in. And if they can give the finger, so be it.

  • Dee in Columbia MD

KT. I’m surprised, you don’t usually engage in the pretend adversary stories. If you want you can accuse fox entertainment of being shamelessly opportunistic but giving the president the finger — really?
    .
I suggest that some one go on line and watch an excerpt I would link but don’t know how, you might find out that in this era of csi all the time that this show has a very creative premise and Tim Roth who is the lead is a pretty good actor. also this show has one of the few strong positive Latina roles. I’m not saying that there aren’t any other but none come immediate to mind.

It’s not surprising. There’s a limit to the number of prime time news conferences the network will tolerate, especially during sweeps. After a certain point, I’m sure they’ll all become tired of giving up millions of dollars in revenue for presidential press conferences. It’s not like they’re denying anybody the opportunity to watch Obama — just turn the channel to CBS.

sgw: Thanks for the link. Beck does like the conspiracy theories. Sometimes it’s just kind of amazing reading the stuff their twisted little minds come up with. .
And face it, once you take away their schtick of distorting the president’s words and clutching their pearls and peeing their pants in reaction, what really does Fox News have?

  • sacredh

One of the reasons they have to get on top of this as quickly as possible is because of the already fragile state of the world economy. Retail sales are already in the dumpster. Having people afraid to go to the stores because of health concerns and having an outbreak that sends massive numbers of people to the hospitals (hello medical bills, goodbye shopping) could be an economic disaster all by itself. Add travel restrictions, closed borders, manufacturing losses, workers reporting off sick etc. and you’re looking at economy already teetering falling off the cliff. They have no choice but to throw everything we have at this outbreak.

  • 53_3

The swine flu brouhaha makes Reid’s statement that reconciliation will be the way to go on health care a reasonable course of action:
    http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/04/27/1910922.aspx
    .
I’ve never liked Reid particularly much, but I think that after months of naysaying, a sham alternative budget, and relentless attacks on virtually every aspect of Obama’s life and philosphies, it’s time to run them the f*ck over.
    .
We can bury their bodies next to those that have died from the swine flu, but I wouldn’t want to insult those who will have suffered by such proximity…

  • 53_3

I don’t think they can get on top of it. There’s a 1 to 4 day incubation period, http://pagingdrgupta.blogs.cnn.com/category/swine-flu/ and that, together with infections in countries that are not well equippped to handle it, it’s a serious threat to get out of control.

Here’s an interesting article on the swine flu: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/apr/27/swine-flu-search-outbreak-source
    .
My current theory is that the young age of the patients in America may be responsible for the milder nature of the cases. Mexico is saying that all of the deaths have been among people aged 20 to 50 (although the Guardian link suggests otherwise, it does seem to hit the young and healthy like the 1918 pandemic), and the average age of patients in the US is 16. Perhaps teenagers are less likely to react to the virus with a fatal cytokine storm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytokine_storm

Eh. I’m not sure why the networks don’t take turns showing presidential events. (They could draw straws or something). It’s not like in the old days before cable, when, if the nets preempted their regular programming, all that was left was the High Chaparral rerun on the UHF channel. These days, if someone doesn’t want to watch the president’s speech, it’s pretty easy to avoid–even if you don’t have cable, but especially if you do.

As for Fox, the behavior on the right is leaving me with a deep empty feeling. Ex winger John Cole finds it Kind of Amazing:
    .
they are mobilizing and going balls to the wall in defense of sadism. It is really quite amazing, and a testament to just how sick and detestable and rotten to the core the Republican party has become.

  • terrymck

Why in this country do all networks need to cover a presidential speech or news conference? It would be completely adequate for the networks to rotate coverage of these events, allowing some of us to watch our favorite programs.

  • mbirchmeier

For those that haven’t seen “Lie to Me” it’s a story about a professional lie detector that tries to solve/prevent crimes. A recurring theme in the show, is they point some body language or mannerism that usually proceeds lies, or attempts to obscure the truth, than show three or four clips of famous people (usually politicians) enacting those mannerisms (usually for things that it’s known when they’re lying).
    .
While they’ve had clips of Obama* on this before. It will be interesting to see if they single him out in any clips tomorrow night.
    .
    -MBirchmeier
    .
*The Obama clip that comes to mind, was during the campaign season. Someone asked him if he though McCain was running an honorable campaign. Obama essentially replied of course he is. However during his reply he kept scratching his nose with his middle finger, a behavior that supposedly indicates deception/hostility.

  • Dee in Columbia MD

mbirchmeier — For the record, that particular micro movement used by Obama that the show highlighted had nothing to do with deception. It was signaling disdain, which is neither deceptive nor hostile, just an appropriate emotion for any one of Obama’s character having to deal with the sophomoric deceptive practices that was the McCain campaign.
    .
I would also mention, just so no one is left with the impression that the show has a political agenda, they have focused on Cheney on more than one occasion to actually highlight disgust and deception, as well as Bill Clinton. So anyone is fair game if you have the right picture to use for a particular story line. But the science behind the show is quite interesting.

  • mbirchmeier

@Dee: I stand corrected on the Obama clip.
    .
I also didn’t mean to indicate the show had a political agenda. Just the three political clips that stood out in my mind were the Obama clip, the Clinton, (I have not had sexual relations) clip, and one of Nixon.
    .
I’m usually playing computer games while my fiancee is watching Lit to me so I only look over when I hear a voice that stands out.

I think the clip of Obama means only one thing. The meaning is clear. It means “FY. That was a stupid question.”
