Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty No. 2), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay-marriage advocates — as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

cspan tells me: we’re having a video error on our end. Fixing right now.

  • Paul-no not that one

What part are we responding to?
    .
Grassley’s talk radio quality comment “I thought it was time for change”? That wouldn’t make sense for this post’s title.
    .
Conrad’s “Hugely controversial”? KT doesn’t naormally go “blue” this early in the day so likely not.

  • Paul-no not that one

“naormally”? Oh dear, normally. My apologies.

spbob – jujitsu? It were lookin’ more like flip-floppin’ in a fit o’ st elmo’s fire t’ me, mate. Kind o’ like th’ last throes o th’ dogfish on deck b’fore givin’ up th’ ghost, so t’ speak :) .

I’m not defending him. The vote is the vote, and he is flopping around like a fish.

Speaking of Grassley I find it very ironic that the last few days people have been playing up the death threats aimed at AIG executives but nobody is pointing out that Grassley said they should kill themselves.

  • Paul-no not that one

Stay classy Sen. Grassley. No wonder the Iowa religious conservatives stripped him of his RNC credentials for the 2008 convention.

  • pirate wench (demwoman)

Thanks t’ ye, KT, fer trackin’ down th’ link problem an’ updatin’ it – it be workin’ right trim, now!

  • pirate wench (demwoman)

Aye, spob – I were aware o’ tha’ – were just opinin’ tha’ th’ flip-flop charge, a favorite o’ theirs, be right fittin’ fer wha’ he were up to…

  • spob

I find it ironic, SG, that you would condemn the call to commit self-violence. Racist six-on-one violent assaults are laudable in your universe, but Grassley’s figurative call (though in very bad form) is worthy of calumny. Interesting set of priorities you got there.

So will you be flying out to Oak-Town to celebrate the death of four Oakland cops: http://www.breitbart.tv/html/306703.html

  • spob

pirate wench, you’ll note, of course, that your buddy Barack has beat a hasty retreat from his faux outrage . . . .

Funny too, how all of those in here defending the confiscatory taxes have shut their yaps. I guess when the fact that the government made its investment in Sept 2008, but allowed them to work under old deal until March has finally sunk in.

  • texgator

Maybe I’m just being a little dense but I didn’t get Conrad’s witty comeback. Was it supposed to be a burn on Grassley? From where I was sitting it pretty much sounded like he was saying, “Of all the Senators my wife had sex with that night she found you to be the most pleasurable.” That’s up there with George Constanza’s “jerk store” line.

  • hellslittlestangel

Wow. “Your wife said the same thing.” Gotta like the guy for that.

Gotta love Costanza and the “jerk store” episode.

  • spob

Conrad was flummoxed, obviously. Kinda like St. Obama in an unscripted moment . . . .

  • Karen Tumulty

OT,sort of: Saw Senator Baucus today over at a health care event at the Center for American Progress and he told me something about Grassley that I found sort of endearing. Grassley is so cheap that he coasts his car down the ramp into the Hart Senate Office Building garage every morning, believing it saves him a couple of pennies on gas. Baucus says Grassley found it much harder to do once he switched for a stick shift to an automatic. Baucus tried it this morning as well.

  • Karen Tumulty

texgator: agree he seemed flummoxed, and wanted the audience to know that grassley didn’t mean it THAT WAY. (which i think grassley did.) i guess grassley had spoken at some event as a favor to conrad’s wife.

  • spob

KT, Grassley is frugal. When you skimp on things for yourself, you’re frugal, when you skimp on things for others, you’re cheap, like, par exemple, buying a foreign leader a box set of 25 DVDs or getting his kids a souvenir from ye olde White House gift shoppe.

  • Karen Tumulty

spob: i stand corrected. he is frugal.

  • spob

    And Obama is cheap . . . .

I would first ‘credit’ him with trying to be ‘hip’, and making an effort to go green by trying to get into hypermiling.
    .
But I do tend to over analyze things, sometime.
    .
Oh, and spob; you’re apparently an idiot.

  • spob

henqiguai, a piece of advice . . . . when you’re going to call someone an idiot, which most assuredly I am not, you should at least refute my post, and then add that comment. Otherwise, you look like a complete moron. Cheer up, though, you’re not eligible for capital punishment in America.

    .

And even you have to admit the pivot to Obama’s lame gift to the PM of Britain was pretty slick.

BHO is cheap because he DIDN’T spend a lot of taxpayer money on the PM gift? Republicans used to celebrate careful use if public funds.
    But, um, nice pivot. Dope.

Dude, to refute a particular post, one must be referring to a particular post. But handing your lil’ bit of advice back to ya, give some proof wherein you can demonstrate that you’re not an idiot. Idiot.
    .
Oh, name calling fight ! Bet I can keep it up longer than you, ’cause I really am kind of off-the-wall, especially on a Friday night (I don’t drink or do drugs, so I got to have something). But the anti-virus scan is about to kick in, and I just don’t want to deal with the performace impact, so I’m going analog in a minute.

Cheer up, though, you’re not eligible for capital punishment in America.

Hey ! Common ground. I’ve been working on a grass-roots effort to get Congress to outlaw stupidity. If I gin up a petition, can I count on your support ?

And even you have to admit the pivot to Obama’s lame gift to the PM of Britain was pretty slick.

Don’t know what you’re talking about. (1) I don’t do wingnut, and that sounds like a wingnut meme, and (2) generally I don’t really care one whit about the trivial machinations of any politician, even the ones I dispise. I will say that I think the entire ‘my gift is more gifty than your gift’ was of less worth than the crap I just scooped out of my cats’ litter box, however.

    Wanna play some more, SFB?

And here’s the thng. Insults only have an impact if they’re in a ‘common’ language. I don’t do twit-speak, so “SFB” just comes across as gibberish. But hey, gibber on…

  • spob

Wow. So now Barack’s DVD set is saving taxpayer money? Who’s the dope?

SFB ends with “brains”–figure it out.
