Grab a Lollipop on Your Way Out, Gupta

Sanjay Gupta has reportedly told Obama thanks, but no thanks–he’d prefer to stick with his TV gig for the time being than serve as Surgeon General. I guess it shows how closely I was paying attention that I didn’t realize he hadn’t been officially nominated for the post yet. That must mean one of two things happened: 1) Obama offered him the post in early January and he took until early March to make up his mind about whether to accept; or 2) Obama offered him the post in early January, he accepted, and then changed his mind now.

Either way, kind of lame, no?

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty No. 2), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay-marriage advocates — as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

Given the fact that Gupta, like every other person at CNN, is a Democrat, how many hundreds of thousands of dollars in owed taxes has he failed to pay the IRS?

I get that you and too many of your colleagues don’t know how not to be a part of the problem. Here’s a tip –stop projecting your obvious limitations and the limitations of the previous failed crew on to this new administration.

Between lessons, and thought I’d swing by, only to find Amy’s typical 1a.m. post, typical in that it betrays the great effort and insight for which she’s quickly becoming renown. Do you have a post quota you must meet, and do your bosses count these late night ephiphanies? JNS turned in her Lonely-Planet lite homework to the Swamp today. A+ baby. Damn, this place is one surreal freak show sometimes.
    ~
Just to get this straight, as it’s always a challenge Amy, but you’re saying the fact that you’ve not been paying attn. must mean one of two possibilities you pontificate about here? Wild speculation coupled to your own obvious disengagement to begin with–just want to be sure, but that is, well, simply brilliant. Mind you, I could give 2 craps about Gupta and the surgeon general. O could nominate a pederast for all I care (oops, they’re all in Rome). The title carries (correct me if I’m wrong) all the importance of Sec. of Commerce or ambassador to Lilliputia.
    ~
And textee, if 100% of the CNN employees are indeed democrats then can I just say god f’ing help all of us. Are they “liberal” democrats in your opinion? With party brethren such as the King bro’s, Wolfie, Borger, ah god, I feel the need of shower merely typing their names–with fellow dem’s like those well… throws up hands in despair, speechless, considering teaching my next class with a shot of Suntory to sustain me.

Come on, Obviously they discovered something in the Vetting process. Probably took pharmaceutical money for positive coverage or something. That guy was always a lil’ sleaze, just look at his lies about Sicko.
    -
They wanted to let him exit with some dignity, but come on, “Spending time with my family” is the oldest excuse in the book.

As long as paying attention to the subject or knowing the facts doesn’t seem to be a requiremnet for either writing or commenting about the subject, let me offer an explanation. Gupta was afraid that he’d be mistaken for Bobby Jindal and decided the risk was too great. On the other hand, maybe he didn’t want to risk being attacked by the republicans because of the similarities between his name and Nancy Pelosi’s. After all, they both contain letters from the alphabet.

He said the person holding the country’s top medical post should “concentrate on giving good, evidence-based recommendations on personal health care and public health to the American people.”
    .
It’s a true reflection of the human condition that even a field as ‘reality based’ as medicine can be infected by political considerations. Certainly it is one field of endeavor that is particularly susceptible to wishful thinking.
    .
As far as the decision process, Gupta appears to be sufficiently ego driven that he realized the government gig would reduce his ability to have impact on events. I’ don’t blame him a bit.

To give Gupta a break, it should be mentioned that the White House was getting killed over this pick by the Left, still angry over Sanjay’s take-down of Michael Moore a few years ago.

It is not clear to me that AS understands that, for most of us here, blogs are NOT a place for random musings about stuff you don’t know anything about. They are a place to introduce fact-based information and/or offer substantive analysis of that news. Or to dissect a partisan news network with zero regard for truth and accuracy.

Never fear, Fox News is on the job:
    .
    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/first100days/2009/03/05/gupta-withdraws-consideration-surgeon-general/
    .
“Gupta’s name surfaced after Obama had tapped former Sen. Tom Daschle to be health secretary and the head of the new White House Office of Health Reform. Farrell said Gupta was apparently offered a dual position in the White House health reform office as well — and would have been serving under Daschle in both cases.

But after Daschle withdrew his name because of tax problems, Obama subsequently nominated separate candidates for health secretary and health reform office director — meaning Gupta could have had two different bosses with different sets of priorities.”
    .
Another bit the article mentions is the pay cut.
    .
I’m sorry to see Gupta go. I really like him, and he’s hyperqualified for the job. Oh well, I hope the next nominee will be somebody I can get behind.

  • rustyreturns

Lame? Not really, more like “usual” for this Administration. But, my question is why Obama does not come out and say in his “open administration to keep the people informed”, the real reason for all of the nominiations ending up on the dung heap of history? Tell us why Mr. Obama, tell us why no one seems to want to stay after they are told what your plans are for the future?

  • rickterp

I think two things could be going on. Either the vetting turned up something ugly or (much more likely in my opinion) Gupta was Daschle’s choice and Sebelius wants someone else. Timing seems to point to the latter — Sebelius is officially announced and then Gupta drops out. Sebelius may have someone else she wants in this position.

  • CP in FL

Amy, instead of giving us your guesses as to why Sanjay Gupta did not take the Surgeon General position; why not do a little research and try to find out the real reason? Maybe Gupta’s imaginary friend told him not to go work for the big bad and scary Obama administration.

    .
Or 3) He declined the post in January or February and the news wasn’t released until now. Given the Daschle story it’s quite possible the Obama Administration did not want to risk the aborted appointment of their other major health care expert overshadowing the actual important things they are doing.
    .
I was puzzled by the Gupta choice but I can’t see any real evidence that suggests Gupta has handled this badly.

  • opensourcepundits

Uh, I don’t see what the big deal is.
    -
He was never nominated for the post, and he was only “rumored” to be in the running in the first place. Which means both of your “options” are likely invalid.
    -
    How about option 3?
    -
    3. Gupta was never offered the job, but had his name floated by some random aide to a reporter, and the media ran with it like a bunch of sugar-high school children.
    -
    Yeah, my money’s on that.

Honestly, I have no idea what went through Gupta’s mind. I have no interest in judging him for a decision that I don’t know that much about.

  • yoshiattack

C’mon guys, Fox has the scoop. :)

  • tantef

Actually Gupta said that if he took the job he would not be able to work as a neurosurgeon and not working as a neurosurgeon for 4 or 8 years would effectively end his surgery career. If you don’t use it you lose it applies to surgeons as well as Republican brains.
