Obama’s Autographs

Here’s a fun, light story from me for your Tuesday afternoon. I’m on the Hill today at the Senate’s weekly policy lunches, and in case you’re really a glutton for punishment you can follow my coverage of the lunches on twitter (God help us all).

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty No. 2), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay-marriage advocates — as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

Ana Marie Cox: McCain’s point on this — and one I’ve come to be sympathetic to — is that, yes, the person in Department of Spending Your Money (that’s, like, all of them, right?) should decide, because, presumably he’s an expert of some sort and knows best how to apportion it. What’s more, and I think this is his real goal, the decision to give the DSYM the money should be done in the open, via subcommittee and committee, so that, for example, Senators can hear testimony on air pollution in Iowa and thus won’t sneeringly mock a bill just because it mentions manure.
    .
As a McCain fan, I have to say that his Tweets about this (earmarks) have been sort of disappointing. His quick wit is suited to the medium but some of the things he’s mocking deserve more than 140 characters. That said, PLEASE DON’T STOP TWEETING, SIR.

Robert Gibbs issued a challenge to the media yesterday:
    .
MR. GIBBS: Well, I think the question is a good one. I think that — I think maybe the best question, though, is for you to ask individual Republicans whether they agree with what Rush Limbaugh said this weekend. Do they want to see the President’s economic agenda fail? You know, I bet there are a number of guests on television throughout the day and maybe into tomorrow who could let America know whether they agree with what Rush Limbaugh said this weekend.”
    .
Yet no blog post here about it. Joe K did post about what Rahm said, but otherwise its almost as if Rush isn’t happening.

JNS-Rush just called you mainstream media types:
    .
These mainstream media people, the drive-bys inside the Beltway … They are butt boys for the Obama administration”
    .
What is your reaction? How does it feel to be call a butt boy by Rush? Where were you when Rush called you out? Are you afraid that if you respond Rush will attack you again? Aren’t you afraid that a failure by you and your fellow reporters to respond to Rush will b seen by his 22 million listners as Rush is right?

crowded around him like starstruck tween girls at a Jonas Brothers concert, all to get his John Hancock on their copies of the speech.

Ouch. Keep an eye out for the drug-addled groupies, JNS.

Not that getting Obama’s autograph is going to make Representative John Culberson, a Texas Republican, any more willing to vote for Obama’s agenda. “No, it wouldn’t have an effect,” says Culberson, who got to the chamber at 8:30 in the morning to save an aisle seat in order to be the first in line to get his speech signed, a memento for his 12-year-old daughter. “This is a piece of history like the ones I have from President Bush and Vice President Cheney. And it doesn’t hurt to have your constituents see you with the President.”
    .
Translation = I’m going to continue with the obstruction, but a lot of my constiruents like the President, so if they see me with him they’ll make a favorable connection with me. Hypocrite

    Thanks for the story, JNS

You don’t think Rush Limbaugh being exposed as the man that no Republican can criticize is a big thing? I do, especially when most Republican talking points seem to come directly from his show. Where do you think Sen Grassley got the term “porkulus” from?

  • Karen Tumulty

sg: like i said in my own tweet, they are lovin’ this at the white house.

Apparently TPM’s Greg Sargent had the gonads to take on Rush. TPM has not apologized yet, but at least the didn’t run to tweet about it or pretend it was happening and wasn’t news. Thank TPM. I must also say I do not have a lot of respect for mainstream reporters who trot out and hide behind those types of excuses while they listen to Rush through out the day.
    .
From Rush’s show today. We’re sort of dragged in as a way of knocking Greg Sargent, who’d caught Rush out on his Obama mumbojumbo. So he was a little touchy …
    .
    Rush Not Likin’ TPM:

“Until a couple months ago, just so you know who Greg Sargent is. He was a blogger at a far left blog post, calls itself Talking Points Memo. This is the website that is now trying to distort Bobby Jindal’s story about Hurricane Katrina, in order to make it look like Bobby Jindal lied in his response to Obama a week ago. So that’s the place Greg Sargent comes from.”

    .
spob is correct: Rush is, in fact, even dumber.

  • spob

I’m not a fan of Limbuagh, but stupid he is not. And you can best believe that he would not say “profit to earnings ratio”. How many dumb things does Obama have to say before he will get the Bush treatment in the media?

57 states, not realizing Ky borders Illinois, Iran is/is not a threat. Oh well, at least Obama doesn’t say “nucular” or “moolahs”.

Today’s headline “In Israel, Clinton Says the Right Things — at the Right Length” like razing the Arab’s houses in “unhelpful”. Is BHO’s administration ALSO going to FOLLOW Israel down that old road to darkness and death? Those sound like impotent words we would hear from a toothless patsy – to the de facto “superpower and leader of the free world”.
