Catholics For and Against Sebelius

Ben Smith says GOP Senator Sam Brownback is publicly backing the nomination of fellow Kansan Kathleen Sebelius for the HHS job. So does that mean she’s a “real” Catholic? Was he persuaded by the folks at the recently-launched CatholicsforSebelius.org? And will his show of support quiet her anti-abortion critics at all?

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty No. 2), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay-marriage advocates — as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

Well Brownback has already filed the paperwork for the governor’s office, and while Sebelius can’t run again, getting her out of the state might make his victory a lot easier…

Go to Ben Smith’s site rather than the specific post AS links to and it seems to me that Ben Smith is a (#2) stirrer. The order of his posts suggest he tried, and failed, to come up with this week’s tempest in a tea pot.
He’s better left to helping “Bobby” Jindal and scrubbing his posts.

They’ll simply call Brownback a traitor to his principles…

Why do we care what a small minority of Americans (anti-abortion critics) think? Why must this issue constantly be raised? Access to abortion services is a settled issue. Roe v Wade has been the law of the land for two generations. Whenever any attempt to substantively reverse Roe is put up to a vote, it loses. Even in South Dakota, in a patently unsubstantive attempt.
    .
The “anti-abortion critics” are pursuing money through conflict and division. It’s simply wrong to give their views column inches. They are out of touch with American society, and have no influence beyond that given them by people like Amy Sullivan.

We don’t care but Amy does hence this post. After her post about Bobby Jindal being ‘scary smart’ I just can’t take anything she says seriously. Not that she had much credibility before that.

In other news, Mike Steele went on CNN last night and pretty much ensure his failure as head of the RNC by calling Rush an entertainer. Which to me is code for Rush is allowed to say stupid things and the media must carry his quotes. He also said that Rush’s comments are often incendiary and ugly and that apparently did not sit to well with the wingnuts who don’t need much these days to throw one of their own under the bus. Question-Is Mike really one of them?

It’s interesting how filtering the world through an abortion-issue-first filter results in people acting surprised over things that are otherwise quite ordinary. The President appoints cabinet officials with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Republicans in the meantime have just learned that vocally opposing popular and moot decisions really don’t help them a whit in the public eye. Why then should it be surprising that they choose not to vocally oppose a candidate for HHS?
    .
To the non-obsessed, it’s not surprising at all…..

Ruffini is trying to move the GOP away from Palin, Joe the Plumber and Rush. But his commenters won’t hear of it. Hilarity.

  • newfloridian

I would expect some Republican Senator from one of the really red states to hold up the nomination simply because it creates publicity, shows well for his right wing safe constituancy and continues the Republican obstructionist campaign. Or they may choose to wait for Obama’s first Supreme Court nomination. It’s a flip of the coin.

Ben Smith’s primary role these days seems to be as a firestarter. He puts some kindling together. lights a match and then runs out and says “look what I’ve discovered!”

In regards to Steele, he has never been known as the brightest bulb in the pack. But the Neanderthal mob know as the Republican Party has difficulty understanding terms such as bright, intelligent, brilliant, etc. and gets easily confused by shiny objects such as Rush. Thus, Steele leads the party and Sarah Palin is a front runner for the party nomination.

  • gysgt213

The republicans are going through an apparent meltdown right now. Will the village notice or cover it up? I vote cover it up. Watching Morning Joe this morning Mika is advancing the meme that it was Rham who anonited Rush the head of the republican party because of his comments on one of the talk shows this weekend. Andy (Swerer?) brought of the fact that all the republicans have to go before Rush and beg forgiveness whenever they utter a crtical word. This was of course happening long before this weekend and went right over Mika’s head. She then brings Pat on to ask if Rush is playing right into the democrats hands. Like the democrats could have come up with this or any other plan to fight back in the first place.

As I’ve been saying, gunny, death spiral. Sane people leave the party. Rejecting reality becomes a requirement for membership. There really aren’t that many people into rejecting reality. But if you don’t, you’re a librul. Rush rules. JtP is a national hero, and a political leader. Sarah Palin is the bestest ever.

For an example of just how crazy the Catholic church and other religious lunatics can be about the issue of abortion, take a look at this article in which the church is ex-communicating the family (and the doctors, ha) of a nine-year old girl because they had chosen to have the girl undergo an abortion after she raped by her stepfather and impregnated with twins.
