Obama’s One Month Anniversary

For a month now we have called Barack Obama president and the baby milestone was marked in different ways by different folks. But my favorite is CBS’s Mark Knoller, who serves it up by the numbers.

Update:
Reader Dee points out that it might be fun to compare coverage of Obama’s first month with other presidents. I agree, so here we go: Clinton (chaos theory), Bush 41 (mixed performance), kind of (un)amazingly this was the only overview TIME did on Bush 43 in his first two months in office.

With Saturday Victories, Romney Retakes Control of the GOP Narrative

Mitt Romney, the perpetually questioned front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, had a rough week. Three embarrassing losses to Rick Santorum in Tuesday’s non-binding contests led to questions about Romney’s conservative bona fides just in time for GOP activists, gathering at their annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, to collectively grumble about it. But in two narrow, largely symbolic victories on Saturday, Romney reclaimed the headlines. Never mind the details. He was winning again.

    • 52% of Americans approve of the stimulus bill, with 41% disapproving. And the public is confident by a 54%-45% margin that the plan will result in significant improvement.
    .
    • President Obama’s overall approval rating comes in at 67%, with only 24% disapproval. His specific approval on the economy is 68%-27%.
    .
    • Congress’ approval is at only 31%-59%, but additional questions show a much more complicated picture. The number for Congressional Democrats is at 49%-45%, while Republicans are at 33%-59%. The Republicans appear to be cramping Congress’ style.
    .
    • Only 30% say Obama hasn’t done enough to cooperate with Republicans in Congress — the GOP base vote, basically — while 62% say he’s doing the right amount and 6% say it’s been too much. Flipping it around, only 27% say Republicans have done enough to cooperate with Obama, with 64% saying not enough and 5% saying too much.
    .
    • And here’s another interesting number. Respondents were asked whether various measures would help the economy — and 65% say pulling out of Iraq would help.

Obama has managed to carry on his campaign luck and remain politically and popularly strong despite the myriad gaffes that plagued his first month.

Even better for Obama, the very same Republicans who railed against his “socialist” stimulus are now touting the many benefits the plan will shower upon their states and districts, with the GOPers gleefully counting up the jobs and revenue to be created.

Cincy, you beat me to it.

It’s not at all surprising that Bush the Lesser got less scrutiny than Obama is currently getting. I do admit part of the reason is that there are many crap sites like Politico out there now that exist on shallow harping but still, it’s not a shocker that the MSM has been harsher on Obama than Bush. Same thing happened with Clinton.

  • http://www.hulagate.org hulagate

The liberals don’t care how much the economy tanks now, just as long as they get a little credit later when it improves all by itself — despite Obama’s dumb fiscal policies.

The truth about FDR won;t be told by the DNC or MSM of course, so I’ll repeat it here:

The New Deal did NOT work.

After 7 years of it, unemployment was almost 20%.

HITLER saved FDR from being the biggest financial flop in U.S. history — mostly from his coddling of unions and protectionism.

Again, where IS the proof that history or the future really matters to the democrat power party?

    Some change, that one.

    Move On indeed.

Im really beginning to like that cat Carlos on MSNBC. A little while ago he gave that jerk Santelli the business.

  • Dee in Columbia MD

Perhaps it’s my turn to be in the unfamiliar role of defending the journalist, but I think now that we have some additional articles to compare to those being written about Obama, we have the beginnings of an interesting development: thanks to JNS we have an actual msm documentation (albeit likely unintentionally) of the different standard being applied to Obama.
    .
The one thing that the American people are rather consistent about is having a sense of fair play. Already, this notion that Obama has no right to use air force 1 could be problematic. Every documented instance of double standardness could useful down the road.

When Bush was in power the Right argued that it was unpatriotic to question his policies. Now that Obama is in office their new mantra appears to be it is unpatriotic to support president. Patriotism seems to be a relative thing to them.

IMHO, it seems like the wingnuts now hate America because it’s not THEIR America anymore. It isn’t run by them, it doesn’t look like them and it sure doesn’t think like them. It’s no longer the recognizable America they grew up with. They’ve lost everything. They live here, but it’s different now and they don’t understand or accept that things have changed. It’s one thing for a president to have attended an Ivy League college, but to have him finish at the top of his class? Too much change too soon. They look around and it’s finally starting to sink in. What if things don’t go back to the way they were before? Where does this leave me? They’re clicking their heels three times and saying “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home”. They’re not in Kansas anymore. They’re scared. The parents moved and didn’t tell them where they were going.

What amuses me most about Fruit Loop.. I mean Hula Hoop.. is that every time he tells us how terrible Obama is, he makes clear how utterly lacking in credibility the GOP and its supporters are. If Obama is a disaster – why does America want no part of the right-wing and its supporters? I can see two possibilities:

    1) Obama is doing just fine, and Americans recognize this

    2) Even if Obama is a disaster, the American people recognize that the militant wingnut jihad would be far worse.

If 1) is true, Hula is simply deluded. If 2) is true, Hula is so dumb that he supports a party that is worse than a disaster, and is proud of this fact.

Can we decide between these two choices?
