We Have Ourselves a Deal

So say the Democratic House and Senate negotiators working on the stimulus bill. It’s just in time for a conference meeting on the bill, scheduled start right about now. The final pricetag is said to be $50 billion less than the package the Senate approved yesterday. We’ll find out soon enough what got cut–and what, if anything, from the House version was restored.

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty No. 2), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay-marriage advocates — as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

    Pokey.

The compromise scales back the tax credits for auto and home purchases and other tax cuts. It also restores some of the House education funding that the Obama administration has called “crucial.” restored.

Looks like we’ll see restoration of some of the money to go to states and localities. Not a bad idea, given the alternative of layoffs and/or local tax increases.

Message to stim bill opponents only: if anyone wants to prevent the U.S. from being looted out of trillions of dollars, help me promote this plan by urging major bloggers to ask their readers to go ask politicians questions about what they’re doing on video.

  • Art Pepper

Kattest, I’m not sure I want to know what politicians are doing on video. The Paris Hilton tapes were bad enough.

Is Kattest asking us to ask bloggers to ask their readers to ask politicians about what they’re doing? I’m just asking. I’d like to take this opportunity to ask one of my fellow commenters to ask Karen Tumulty to ask Kattest why he still can’t think up one ‘tough question’ to ask. Then ask me how you can lose 10 pounds in 10 days!

Does anyone have a link or a hint as to which website might have information regarding the distribution of the stimulus package?

I work at a government lab and we’ve been a wee bit interested to see if we’re going to have any funding this year.
    .
We’re still operating under the Continuing Resolution which last year led to layoffs and furloughs.

To be fair, kattest’s idea of asking confrontational questions of our elected leaders is a good idea, and it’s what our media should be doing.
And especially for all these stimulus bills and TARP funds – even if they’re well intentioned, you know a trillion dollar bill is going to have the vultures circling.
    .
But it would look better for kattest if he/she came up with some example questions.

Republicans are completely worried about a “permanent Democrat majority” as blown hard by their leader, Rush Limbaugh. But at the same time they say that this bill will destroy the country. Well, Republicans… you have to take your pick:
    .
Either the bill will have a net positive affect on the economy, thus sealing Democratic dominance for the foreseeable future; or the bill will cause a major economic collapse, thus destroying the Democratic party and ushering in a new era of long-term Republican rule.
    .
You get it? It’s either one or the other, not both.

Thankfully, no – I came to the church later in life when rulers were out of favor. Seminary tuition had about the same effect in the end, though, worse luck. “We don’t take a vow of poverty because we’re already there.”

There’s still time enough for House shenanigans or last-minure defections by the three GOP amigos propping up the entire stimulus. I’ll believe the deal when this package is passed and on the president’s desk.
