Please Go Away–II

In today’s edition of Please Go Away, we have Andrew Card suggesting that Barack Obama should wear a suit and tie when he’s in the Oval Office. After all, George W. Bush did–and all that respect for the office helped him to be a really great President.

The point is, when people are actually working–as opposed to working out their Oedipal crises in the Oval Office–they tend to want to roll up their sleeves and get comfortable.  George W. Bush could have come to work in a tuxedo and still been a lousy President; Barack Obama will do just fine in shirtsleeves, I predict.

In the meantime, Andy Card, you join Dick Cheney on the expired list: Please. Go. Away.

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty No. 2), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay-marriage advocates — as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

  • formerlyjames

Card continued, “I don’t criticize Obama for his appearance, I do expect him to send the message that people who are going to be in the Oval Office should treat the office with the respect that it has earned over history.”

The level of respect left in the place by Little Bush would call for bare feet and wife beater undershirts. Obama’s code certainly rises several levels above that.

Frankly, I would have preferred that the Bush administration had decided to show their respect for the constitution by following it rather than putting a Jacket over it and strangling it with a tie.
    .
But having said that, isn’t there some unwritten rule about not bashing the previous administration for at least a year? And if this is so why are their comments being sought out?

ivb, I find myself shouting at NPR a lot lately. I didn’t used to do that. As I drove to town yesterday, I heard an interview on NPR with Gov. Pawlenty (R-MN), in which he offered repuglican economic “wisdom” without any reality based pushback at all – not a word. That was followed by a conversation with political reporter, and Faux News hack Juan Williams on Obama’s bad day. I mentioned this to a friend, who told me that “Yesterday I got treated to a lengthy interview on NPR with Sen. DeMint of South Carolina. This morning it was an interview with someone arguing that the New Deal was actually harmful to the economy.”
    .
NPR helping the repuglicans do what they do best . . .
    .
And Brinkley is full of it. Obama is/was trying to bring a new tone to DC, the way he did on the campaign. That turned out to be a mistake, at least in the short term, but it was the right thing to try.

yutsano, I don’t see how my comment is worthy of ridicule. It certainly is within the bounds of legitimate opinion to think that Obama’s lack of suit has something to do with his “do as I say, not as I do” admonitions re: heat. Moreover, since we’re talking about the dignity of the Oval Office, perhaps we can remember how the last Dem president treated it.

jake has some astute observations up above at 7:25. Dare I add that politicians are politicians. The only road there is one of deceit and theft. There, I said it. Which is to imply that I hold my breath hoping that Obama himself isn’t found one day with his pants down. The only reason I stay with the Dems is that the Repubs beyond stealing add the further insult of monitoring your bed and morals all the while stalking the stalls in airport men’s rooms. Anyway, jake makes a cogent point of the venom that flows here sometimes.
    .

Wasn’t it hard to follow “coherant” with the term “conservative”?

  • newfloridian

I do believe coherant conservative and the ivory billed woodpecker share the same folklore. Some think it still survives and some claim to have heard it, but no one can prove it exists.

  • mmchampion

formerlyrainbow68, I believe Fox News is seeing a decline, perhpas steeper than the other news organizations out there. Perhaps it’s because of their relentless negativity wrt telling people how hopeless it is right now.
    .
Too many expected all of the injustices to fixed in the first few weeks. Though I don’t recall that as being the message that was stated on inauguration day. Something more like “it’s going to be a long hard slog and things are going to get crappier before we can think of them getting better.”
    .
In the meantime, Bush/Cheney are walking free, Army suicides have gone up, more people have lost their jobs, etc…
    .
And, here is where I get hopeful, Guantanamo is scheduled for closure, the repub’s are starting to be exposed for their ‘politics over people’ policies, and apparently, Alberto is still looking for a job ‘because the economy is bad’. We all know why the economy is bad and we all know that’s not why he can’t find a job so…

  • formerlyjames

newfloridian, it depends on what “coherant” and “conservative” mean. As to the existance of either, I vaguely recall from my youth having seen both, but I am not sure. I have definately seen an ivory billed woodpecker. He was operating a rock crushing machine in a diamond mine in a place I cannot remember.

I believe all of this drama will be short-lived. Obama will get his stimulus package, Repubs will be on record as having opposed it and the chips will fall where they may. Most fair-minded people realize there is a huge learning curve when you first become President. Maybe it was a little much, quickly, but most Americans would rather support him than write him off this early. Also, Obama is coming off an unusually long primary season and the death of a beloved family member/mentor. Shouldn’t he be given a little leeway?

And he was very right, it’s going to get a whole lot crappier before it gets better. h/t to JK for bringing up Andrew Card. The country is in a shambles and he’s worried about a suit coat? What a wonderful reminder (metaphor) for what our country has gone through. It made me relieved to hear that those who ran our country were just as dense as I thought they were. My father used to spread fertilizer on our tiny patch of lawn in his suit coat and tie. I worked for a corporation that considered talking about salaries as being a firing offense. Needless to say, if I was inequitably paid, I never knew about it. And as the single mom (sans child support – he kept changing jobs/getting fired) of two teens with engineering school loans to pay off, I could’ve used the extra funds. I took on a second job when I realized I couldn’t afford the soccer fees for them (let alone the extra shoes and uniforms.)
    .
Times are better now but McCain and SCOTUS voted Lily down and Obama signed the papers making it illegal to unfairly compensate in his FIRST WEEK.
    .
Yeah, there’s more to be done but can we be positive about something at least?

mmchampion: I think one of the reasons it’s going to get worse first is that we as a country have so much personal debt. I have dear friends and family members who literally had the phrase “No regrets!” as their mantra to justify lavish living on a modest budget. We have some debt, too, but have really tightened up lately and will have three bills paid off at month’s end. Hallelujah! I think the difference between now and other recessions is that we didn’t act like prior generations and save. My husband and I have tried to stay debt-free, but car repairs, etc. have always done us in. I don’t think the stimulus package may help we Americans right away because we have spent ourselves into having no financial margins. Obama didn’t create that. I hear a lot about how greedy the 80s were (when I was growing up). The 80s had nothing on the last 10 years of having to have the correct purse, shoe, car, subdivision, I could go on. I remember several years ago when my family and extended family took all of our kids to Disney World. My aunt was telling an acquaintance how we saved money by staying at Econo Lodge and bringing our own breakfasts and snacks. The lady looked at my aunt like she was a bug and sniffed, “Oh, good for you.” We’re (our country)is spoiled and broke. It’s going to take a while for old bad habits to break. I now admire my parents and grandparents more than I ever have. They didn’t buy if they didn’t have cash.

Formerlyrainbow, I know. When I hear everyone fussing about how folks will use a ‘windfall’ just to pay off debt I think that they’ve never lived paycheck to paycheck with a crappy car and kids who need clothes and food and money for school field trips.
    .
Many folks are drowning in debt and are now doing their best to dig out. A bill reducing usurious credit fees would be helpful. People pay off high interest credit cards and then use the extra money to buy food, help with their rent, take the kids to the matinee. It goes back into the economy a whole lot faster than Congress realizes.

    Crickets.
    .
Relax everyone. I found my stepstool and will now climb off my soapbox.
    .
Just please remember, the lib’s are supposed to be the optimistic/inclusive/open-minded folks.
    .
Now go away or I will taunt you again (and take up way too many comment spaces.)

  • formerlyrainbow68

mmchampion: I agree. It’s so funny you mention a car and field trip. I have to have my son’s permission slip + cash tomorrow. That doesn’t include food and souvenirs. As far as cars go, mine is an older Toyota. When I brought it in for an oil change and tire rotation a couple of weeks ago, my name was called and I was ushered into a room away from everyone else and told, “Your car is in great condition! However…” Several hundred dollars and an hour later, I left with my car. That was put on credit card. We are trying to build up savings and retire all of our debt, but we have 2 kids and I think life will be expensive for the foreseeable future. But, as a country we will have to sacrifice like the President says. We’ve got to get out of our personal financial messes and our national one. I guess that is what makes this ridiculous game of chicken the Senate is playing so maddening!

I am delighted that Pres. Obama laid it on the line. He has compromised enough. At this point the Repugnicants should be sent to the timeout corner and shut up. Let’s remind them again and again, they made this mess; their tax cutting, trickle down, unregulated market policies DO NOT work. Now give it up and get a few votes to get this bill out of the Senate and passed.

Snow and Collins…ladies do you know where you live? Vote to move this bill. You know it is the right thing to do!

As for Lieberwhatsis….I wonder how his constituents in Connecticut feel about his commitment to ole buddy McCain superceding their interests? What’s with that? Too bad its a 6-year term or he’d be done next year.

Pres Obama is absolutely right…what exactly did you think a stimulus bill was intended to do? The overwhelming view of the leading economists is that the government has to spend to fill the gap of private sector and personal spending. Tax cuts and the little mortgage gambit don’t work when millions are making NO money. NO MONEY!

Pack of flipping Repugnicant fools, they still haven’t gotten the message! As my dear granddaddy always said: “Democrats always get a bum rap because they have to come in to clean up the mess Repugnicants make.” And so it goes. The question is for Card, Cheney and their obstructionist friends in Congress: Have you no shame?

  • mmchampion

oh crap, is that a stepstool? Hey, I found it again.
    .
Rainbow68, I hardly ever carry cash because I was sure that when I walked in the door the kids could smell it (hey! is that a ten? oooh, it’s a twenty!) and would promptly present me with some piece of paper from their school that said they needed ‘x’ dollars for something like a field trip or whatever. I also drive a Toyota becuase Consumer Reports keeps saying they’re reliable and I was the person on the side of the road with two car seats in the back too many times. It gets better (and if you’re awful and strict enough to them in high school they won’t want to move back (that includes no nintendo (or whatever it is now) and slow internet rates for surfing porn (I wondered why all the boys in the neighborhood hung out at our house for awhile.))
    .
Like all families, it will get better with time.
    .
But keep the Toyota just in case.
    .
And now adieu, I have netflix. We now return you to our regularly scheduled feeding frenzy.

Thanks mmchampion, enjoy your movie. Good night everyone.

Given his military expertise, maybe Field Marshall Klein will offer suggestions on the uniforms worn by the United States military.

    …………….

Why do my kids have to pay for your financial screwups?

    Or your smoking habit?

    Your over-easting?

    Boozing?

    Sexing?

    Group mental hug sessions?

Or do you intend to pay my taxes and medical fees, as part of some loose change grand bargain with loads of hot D.C. Mall air if very little solid American math?

Liberals are great at invoking separation of church & hate when it suits their irresponsibility (hello Teddy Kennedy), but loathe the leave the largess of ship behind when it might entail something beyond early retirement on the socialist loon dime.

There’s plenty of blame to go around for the current mess.

Let us not make it worse by piling more stupid federal debt onto a lot of stupid personal debt.

  • formerlyrainbow68

hulagate: First of all leave Kennedy alone. He’s dying, for pete’s sake. Next, I don’t have financial screwups. Just credit card debt due to car repairs and life. I will have it paid off by March 1. I believe the stimulus bill does need work. I believe giving the middle class some sort of tax break is appropriate, at least until things get better. I was just saying that we as a country have gotten ourselves into trouble by spending like drunken sailors. It was Bush who had the auto bailout, if you’ll remember. We’re in a mess of trouble and hopefully the Dems and Repubs will be able to work it out.

“Why do my kids have to pay for your financial screwups?”
    .
Actually, hulu, (remember the def), it is your financial screwup and yes, they will pay, regardless of how you may feel:
