It’s Better To Burn Out Than To Fade Away

Turn on your televisions. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is defending himself in his impeachment trial. He just called for the impeachment of the governor of Wisconsin, expelling Ted Kennedy and firing Rahm Emanuel, saying he is just as guilty as they are. (Which is to say, not that guilty.) His logic had something to do with importing pharmaceuticals from Canada. He’s just getting going.

Obama’s Persuasive Powers on Gay Marriage Manifest in Maryland

When President Obama endorsed gay marriage earlier this month, the media grappled with two basic political questions: Was his personal “evolution” a case of a politician transparently following a national trend toward accepting same-sex unions (accelerated, perhaps, by his chatty No. 2), and would it hurt his re-election chances by alienating socially conservative voters like black churchgoers? Sure, there was a recognition that it marked a gratifying moment for gay-marriage advocates — as well as some grumbling about the President’s view that it remains a state issue, not a federal one. But by and large, there were few suggestions that one man, even the President, would shift public opinion on the issue or affect public policy. Based on a new Public Policy Polling survey out of Maryland, it seems this possibility was underestimated.

    Cherokee Zero

Apparently, Massachusetts voters don’t mind that Elizabeth Warren foolishly identified herself as a Native American early in her academic career–it was, apparently, a case of family pride and wishful thinking about a Cherokee ancestor. That’s good. Warren may be the best public figure when it comes to explaining the depredations of the financial industry and [...]

Michael-What in the world has the governor of WI got to do with it?

  • queencersei

What did Pearl Harbor or Ghandi have to do with anything? Blago is off the deep end. Where will he go from here? I smell a talk radio deal in the works. That of course is if he doesn’t end up sharing a cell with his predessesor.

  • gysgt213

Maybe the gov of WI shot Ghandi which caused Pearl Harbor to blow up?

  • michaelscherer

Both Blago and the Gov. of Wisconsin supported drug importation, so if he supported it and he should be impeached than they should also be impeached. That’s his argument.

  • gysgt213

“Both Blago and the Gov. of Wisconsin supported drug importation”
    .
Was this before or after shooting Ghandi?

  • kathy

This is totally repulsively fascinating. aaaaaugh. sticking finger down throat. This has got to be payback to the bastards for impeaching him.

Okay, what was the question again? Good god, is this a filibuster?

Michael, hopefully this is a flameout like a skyrocket ascending loudly in all of its verbal splendor before, before, before….what was that about means and ends and means, blah, blah, blah. Has Guinness been called?

Governor Blago will soon have a permanent place in the English language. People will be saying “he just Blagoed out.” Meaning they started talking incoherantly.

Perhaps this will lead to a constitutional amendment in Illinois that all candidates for political office must submit to a psychological exam prior to running for office. At this point the good people of Illinois have no doubt become aware that they have been led by a person whose collection of marbles have been scattered.

What song title are you going to use to apologize for your whole career? Suggestions anyone?

  • incandenzah

I’m sorry to bring this up, because I’ve been avoiding following this “news” story. But what laws did Blago break again? I thought politics was all about finding a way to give something to get something & as long as it wasn’t lining your own pockets (or cronies’) then it was jsut the way politics gets done — I do this political favor, you donate to my pet hospital project. Is this just a misdirection, so we don’t think about how Bush/Cheney gave away so much taxpayer money to their friends?

Blago seems to be following a typical Republican prescription for redemption, though:

    Michael,
Let’s test your assertion. Let’s watch Halperin burn out, while you fade away. Then we’ll decide which we liked better.

It’s like some sort of alternate-reality thing. Blago’s in his own little world. Never mind finding him guilty … just send for the men with the butterfly nets to take him away.

Why are all of these seemingly good people doing bad things? Let me state for the record that I don’t think it is wrong that Haggard is gay, just that he lied to his family and the rest of us about it while condemning other gays as wrong. I am upset with what I am reading on the news lately about these seemingly good people who are doing really bad things. Why is this happening? I recently read a book that I thought had a very interesting theory. The book is called, “Why Good People Do Bad Things”, by Debbie Ford. In this book Ford makes the argument that we all have the capability of doing really good things and really horrible things. Ford says that when we suppress the, “dark-side” of ourselves then we act out. I thought it was really relevant that right after I read this book I read an interview with Haggard where he says that he, “gave in to his dark-side”. Debbie Ford says in her book that when we can learn to love and embrace our whole self, the good and the bad then we wont act out. Maybe if Blagojevich had embraced his greed he could have accepted it as a part of him and it wouldn’t have ruined his career. It is truly sad to see these public figures disgraced. Maybe if we all embrace our whole self we wont act on out…
