Mitt Romney’s Sweet Spot: Just Conservative Enough

Why is Mitt Romney having trouble winning over the conservative Republican base? One reason is his lack of political finesse, an air of dorky rich-guy aloofness that reminds some people of John Kerry. More important, however, is his ideological profile. In almost every important way, Romney’s policy platform is more moderate than those of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. Gingrich  offers a much more conservative tax plan, along with crowd-pleasing ideas like his plan to sic federal marshals on “radical” liberal judges. Santorum carries a blazing social-conservative torch, championing ideas like a constitutional ban on abortion. Both Gingrich and Santorum talk quite openly about the virtues of bombing Iran. Romney’s temperature runs cooler in all these areas. Not to mention his past record of pro-choice, pro-gay rights positions. As Jon Chait notes today, the GOP establishment is defending Romney but also working hard to push him to the right.

Conflict Over Obama’s Contraception Rule Intensifies

The Administration’s decision to require Catholic charities and universities to provide free birth control through employee health coverage is several weeks old, but the maelstrom of dissent it’s created is widening. Republicans, who charge that the measure violates such organizations’ religious freedoms, have allied with Catholic groups in opposition, and in recent days a handful of high-profile Democrats have joined their ranks in calling on the Administration to broaden exemptions from the rule.

I don’t suppose Bush took Karl with him?

  • Andy from MA

KT — This is NOT news IMHO. Mr. Rove I allege, is responsible for perpetrating the politicization of the DOJ. He also has refuse to testify under oath after receiving a congressional subpoena. His opinions, comments, exultations, and other verbiage don’t need to be reported here. However, his sworn testimony before Congress would be most welcome.
    .
I can’t see you justifying this post…but am open to hearing your explanation.

  • http://pourmecoffee.blogspot.com pourmecoffee

    So diverse! Like a rainbow!

  • Karen Tumulty

    Andy:

Um, this is a blog, and I thought it was sort of funny.

  • Andy from MA

KT — Works for me…won’t be able to see the video until I get home from work…but why does this guy get a free ride when he is allegedly obstructing justice? Would you post a clip from Harriet Myers or Alberto Gonzales if it was funny or not?

  • formerlyjames

KT, right you are. This is a blog and anything goes. Karl is always entertaining to me in the same way that as an athiest I enjoy watching the teevee religious crazies. I like the music on the video, too.

  • davemc321

I haven’t seen the clip yet. Does it show Rove dancing? Dear God, don’t let it show Rove dancing.
    .
Lighten up a little, folks. Ridicule is as harsh a weapon as righteous indignation. If a clip shows Harriet Myers or Alberto G being ridiculous – and how could it not – then I hope KT would run it.

  • FlownOver

I wish we had video of the hi-jinx in the Berlin bunker in early May ’45. That Goebbels was a hoot, that’s what he was.
    .
OK, that’s a little over the top, but some people have done so much harm there’s nothing about them that’s funny anymore. See, e.g., Pol “Shecky” Pot or Genghis “Take my horde, please” Khan.

  • ymmartin

Oh god, a little bile came up into a mouth when the music started and you see the back of Rove’s head and you realize his bopping to the music, and then the camera pans out and you see his whole body moving…ugh, there’s the bile again. BRB.

  • formerlyrainbow68

    What were they signing?

Senator Kennedy released from the hospital.

  • Andy from MA

davemc321–Rove seems have immunity granted by the MSM…it’s my only peeve about this.

  • formerlyrainbow68

Will Hillary be voted on today?

  • FlownOver

    rainbow –

Let’s all call Cornyn’s office at (202) 224-2934 and ask.

  • formerlyrainbow68

    Thanks FlownOver.

  • http://smoothlikeremy.blogspot.com/ sgwhiteinfla

Corynyn’s punk ass already said he will vote to confirm Hillary. If Republicans are gonna pull this kinda sh!t somebody better tell them to see it through. Otherwise its too easy to see what they are doing. On second thought, don’t tell em.

Country music and a whole lotta overdressed, older white people; the faces of the modern GOP.

    formerlyrainbow68: What were they signing?
    .
    Big letter W’s.

  • mccainfluffer

While I was hoping this post had something to do with Rove being “frog marched,” I do think that Rove’s place in history has been set. He was the architect of the Bush/Republican divisiveness and over politicization of the Federal Government. These acts, helped create the mess we are in now. Thus, Rove along with George W. Bush, should receive proper credit for destroying the modern Republican Party.

  • g_crush

    .
Speaking of Rove, was he at the inauguration? I can imagine that he wasn’t, being subpoenaed by Congress and all…kinda scary for him to be that close to the Capitol…

  • formerlyrainbow68

I guess they were going to give the “W”‘s to Bush?

FlownOver: Senate will vote on Hillary today. I guess they just wanted to embarrass her?

  • Andy from MA

grape: Thanks for your post at #18.

  • dunedweller

    “W” for “worst”

  • FlownOver

    sgwhiteinfla –

Maybe they’re adopting Harry Reid as a tactical model – take a stand, then cave.

    rainbow –

    Like they know any better?

  • billiecat

Why are they signing a big “M”? Is it for “Moron”?

  • billiecat

Geez, who filmed that? I’d say Barney but his camera work generally shows more subtlety and, well, ankles.

  • cincinnatus est exterminata!

Country music is proof that God hates us all.

  • mmchampion

The video reminded me of the last day of high school when everyone signs everyone else’s yearbook – a very fitting metaphor for this administration.
    .
Thank goodness grown-ups are now in charge of our country. Time to put away childish things.

  • Andy from MA

Cincy you know what happens when you play country musci backwards?

  • davemc321

You find out Conway Twitty is dead.
    .
Scoff all you want, elitists but CW music is just more proof God loves diversity.
    .
Merle Haggard speaks more truth to me than Fall Out Boy. I’d rather listen to The Steeldrivers than Maroon 5. And Alison Krauss could sing the phone book and it would be beautiful.
    .
Now if you’re talking the gooped up, Top 40 crap of, say, Rascal Flats or Sugarland, I’m with you, brother.

  • sqr1

Lighten up, Dee. If you don’t want to post goofy videos of Rove on your blog that’s your choice.

  • 53_3

If this was really through Karl Rove’s eyes, why isn’t the video coarsly hexagonally pixellated, like any other insect would see?

  • 53_3

    FlownOver:
“Maybe they’re adopting Harry Reid as a tactical model – take a stand, then cave.”
    .
Maybe not Harry Reid, but close.
    .
They are taking a stand in a cave…

Or CM is proof that there is no god, but these deep thoughts are better suited to Amy “The wind-up Jesus kaleidoscope’s” posts.
