The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Michael-I don’t have speakers at work. Could you give just a brief summary of the video. I will watch tonight at home. Thanks.

  • James, Los Angeles

    Nice. Very nice.

This is a question to Michael or the High Sheriffs: Where did you get the recording of Air & Simple Gifts? They just recorded it a few days ago! I’m a composer myself and would like to share this with my students…thanks. (If you need to contact me offline, please do at hausorob@gmail.com)

Not to be a killjoy, but I didn’t feel the unity and one-ness that all the videos seem to be portraying. People were cold, crowded, tired, and grouchy. Sure, everyone cheered at the appropriate moments but Election Night was a much happier occasion.

I haven’t watched the other videos yet, but the one featured is to me excellent. Thanks.

Beautifully done. Thanks for sharing this.

    @ Lulu –

Lulu, it sounds like you were at the inauguration? So was I, but I beg to differ with your “grouchy” assessment. Sure, people were cold, crowded, tired, but no one was grouchy. Everyone was extremely friendly and talkative with one another, to an even greater extent than election night (which i also attended in Grant Park). I don’t consider myself a very outgoing/social person but I must have ended up talking just randomly to at least 30 people yesterday while waiting around, moving, buying merchandise or trying to get back to the train station.

Very fun event, albeit horribly organized by the Inaugural Committee.
