The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

  • newfloridian

    Karen,
This news is surreal! The war monger and previously most powerful man in America reduced to publically appearing in a wheel chair. HA HA HA HA !

If this were a comic book or comic book movie he would reappear shortly as some sort of evil villian.

  • emkay11225

Funny, I’d have said Dr. Strangelove.

  • gysgt213

Can we take away his healthcare? Now!

  • mccainfluffer

Dick Cheney reminds me of both Mr. Potter and C. Montgomery Burns. I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that Cheney is working on his autobiography, “Will There Ever Be a Rainbow?.”

  • http://pourmecoffee.blogspot.com pourmecoffee

That is so funny and, of course, reminds me of the classic lost ending to It’s A Wonderful Life.

  • kbanginmotown

Dick Cheney, because he d!cked us.

  • Paul-no not that one

Anything to not stand for the new President.

  • Matt

Is this the most ironic event in world history? Gotta be close…

Hopefully, crazy old Uncle Hank won’t misplace the rest of that TARP money for Potter/Cheney to find and hide away….

    @Coffee: :-D Win!

  • http://policingwingnutwelfare.blogspot.com/ JJ

Someone beat me to the Dr. Strangelove reference…

  • onlystandstoreason1

The guy hurt his back moving boxes and the liberal peanut gallery erupts in applause. This really shows hows pathetic and desperate you guys are. If Michelle Obama gets cervical cancer, you guys going to whoop and holler over that, too?

  • Dee in Columbia MD

@onlystandstoreason1– as usual you folks go straight to a black woman’s private anatomical parts in a such a matter of fact way that you don’t even realize how historically inappropriate it is. Bipartisanship aside, go jump off a f@#king cliff.

  • onlystandstoreason1

Dee, but it’s okay for you and your ilk to make fun of white guys?
    .
    Historically inappropriate? Puke.
    .
Stop playing, “How have I been victimized” and deal with the facts. You liberals seem to think it’s okay to jump on people and when there’s retaliation, you cry, “Unfair!”
    .
Stop being a pussy or stop getting in people’s faces with your hatred.

  • smartpeopleiknow

Of course the question is: why is Dick Cheney moving boxes? I mean: he has no aides or assistants to do that? Odd.

  • onlystandstoreason1

I don’t think it’s odd, manual labor is good for you. And depending on what he was moving, over exerting oneself happens a lot when moving.
    .
I just don’t understand why you’d make fun of someone’s injury. That seems catty and immature.

  • sacredh

The wheelchair is a nice touch and can be interpreted as a crippled presidency being wheeled out, but I’d rather see him strapped to a gurney with a mask on like Hannibal Lecter.

  • onlystandstoreason1

Nice, sacredh, what if I said I can’t wait for Obama to be chained like a gorilla?
    .

  • Dee in Columbia MD

@onlystandstoreason1 — after having brought our country to its knees joking about Cheney’s loss of power literally and metaphorically is probably fitting and not at all about making fun of white guys. Its about processing the damage done by one supremely pompous Dick Cheney. You on the other hand are being deliberately disrespectful in a manner that white men have been doing since they raped the first slave woman. Why you would chose to go where you went says a lot more about you personally than anything about your political persuasions. Own it your crap and don’t try to justify your remark by saying well Liberals were making fun of Cheney.

  • Dee in Columbia MD

@onlystandstoreason1 “Nice, sacredh, what if I said I can’t wait for Obama to be chained like a gorilla?”
    .
So no matter what anyone says racially tinged remarks is all you got?

  • sacredh

onlystandstoreason1, I would say that you are exercizing your constitutional right of freedom of speech. I would also say that your wait will be a long one. May I suggest that you hold your breath until that happens? Leave a note explaining to your loved ones why you are blue and passed out on the floor. Scatter some cushions first. I wouldn’t want you to get hurt.

  • onlystandstoreason1

So, when you make fun of people, it’s “processing damage”, but I when I do the same in return (only to make the point that it’s wrong), it’s an indictment of my character. You really are ignorant, sistah, I would never make fun of someone for getting cancer, just like I would never make fun of someone with a back injury. Certainly you should oppose anything reprehensible in Cheney’s actions, but why make fun of him in a wheelchair?

  • onlystandstoreason1

    >So no matter what anyone says racially tinged remarks is all you got?

You liberals think you can throw bombs “Cheney should be strapped by Hannibal” but be immune from being called out on it. Your justifications for your own offensive remarks is to call someone else offensive. Your tactics are transparent.

  • Dee in Columbia MD

@onlystandstoreason1 — see here is where you blow y9our cover, You call me ignorant but it is you that uses the term sistah with such disdain exposes your racial animus. You talk about making fun of Cheney’s injury but I don’t believe anyone said ha ha Cheney hurt his back. They were acknowledging the irony of the imagery of the most powerful man or the crippled presidency appearing in a weakened state on the very last day. Now maybe in your world that is the same as making fun of someone for having cancer but I guess your world is rather intellectually challenged. Oh and by the way — you are the only one who brought up cancer, cervical or otherwise. You brought up gorilla too so don’t get angry because your statement lead other to call your character into question.

  • onlystandstoreason1

ok, so let me this right, sistah, Karen Tumulty wasn’t making fun of Cheney, she was “acknowledging the irony of his imagery”.
    .
Your reaching pretty far on this one!

  • joethecitizen

He’s 69 years old, has had several cardiac events, and was until today the most powerful Vice President in the history of the Republic – and you really think he’s moving his own boxes? Please. That’s about as plausible as W having read 95 books this year. He just doesn’t want to have to stand up.

  • sacredh

Last day on the job. A back injury. Very suspicious. I think he’s going to pull the workers compensation thing

  • Dee in Columbia MD

“Cheney should be strapped by Hannibal”
    .
Not my remark but clearly someone wants to see Cheney get a lethal injection.
    .
You people always talk about personal responsibility but yet do not want to take any for lying the country into war. When thousands die as a result of situation that has been falsely and deliberately created knowing full well that this might be the outcome is at best depraved indifference (grounds of a murder indictment). And that’s before we even get to torture and the rest of the crimes against the constitution that Cheney and his minions engendered.

  • onlystandstoreason1

Accusing the VP of faking an injury to get out of standing up for the new administration? Are you out of your mind? That this could even enter your mind as a plausible rationale is disturbing (what kind of wussies do you hang around?)

  • onlystandstoreason1

    > people always talk about personal responsibility …
    .
Ok, so brave souls fighting for the integrity of our nation do it by mocking someone’s injury?
    .
I get why you people don’t like Cheney. Fair enough. But my point is that by ridiculing him in a wheelchair is a despicable act.

  • sacredh

The last thing I would ever want is for anything serious or fatal to befall either Bush or Cheney for one very good reason. I want Bush to be the first ex-president to live to be 100 years old. Same for Cheney. If they are alive we can trot them out every election cycle as living examples of what happens when right wingers are elected. Bush/Cheney are and will be invaluable to the democrats. They did more to elect Obama than Hillary, Bill or Colin Powell ever could.

  • Karen Tumulty

sacredh: I’ve entered you in the commenter contest that we have going on over at the liveblog.

So, when you make fun of people, it’s “processing damage”, but I when I do the same in return (only to make the point that it’s wrong)…

Schadenfreude; c’mon, onlystandstoreason1, say it with us – schadenfreude. See ? Easy. Now, go back and look at all the truly cruel crap that routinely, and apparently sincerely, comes out of the rightwingnut space about anybody daring to not toe their idiot line of thought. Especially if they’re perceived to be “liberal”.
    .
By the way, how’d you react to Ann Coulter’s denigration of the wives of the survivors of one of the 9/11 attacks ?

  • onlystandstoreason1

    Look at my comment #23.
    .
Whenever liberals are called out for something, say, making fun of guys in wheelchairs, their standard response, change the subject and blame someone else. No matter what “someone else” said on “some other board” or “some other medium”, it doesn’t excuse Tumulty and friends from their own shameful statements.
    .
You should either agree or disagree with mocking injuries, but the evasive blaming of others “who do wrong” doesn’t justify your own wrong.

  • jdh2523

All of this is obscuring the real issue, which is that he looks not like Mr. Potter (though evil as he may be). Rather, he looks a whole lot like the Big Lebowski.

    http://i.realone.com/assets/rn/img/1/2/8/4/22774821-22774823-large.jpg

This gives a whole new meaning to the “fabricating evidence to divert attention” slant of Cheney’s reign.

  • onlystandstoreason1

oh, is that the real issue? It gives a whole new meaning to “Acknowledging the irony of the imagery”. Maybe call him, Ironsides.
    .
Well done, liberals. You make your party proud.

  • Cliff

Yeah, see, this is the reason why you shouldn’t engage onlystandstoreason. He’s just here to disrupt the thread.

  • onlystandstoreason1

You mean you should be allowed to make fun of guys in wheelchairs unencumbered?

  • newfloridian

    onlystandstoreason1:

Like most conservatives you suddenly decide to stick up for the less fortunate when it suits a purpose. Otherwise they can all just sit and die! Right?

I liked the earlier Hannible Lector reference, he should have been wheeled out on a dolly with a barred face mask. Much more in character.

  • onlystandstoreason1

Either making fun of people who are wheelchaired after an injury is despicable or it isn’t. How I feel about this is irrelevant. Again, you’re changing the subject to deflect from the accountability of the act itself.

  • Friar Tuck

I’d think you’d be thrilled that Cheney is in a wheelchair, onlyonereason. It’ll get him some sympathy at the war crimes trial.

  • onlystandstoreason1

Maybe tomorrow Tumulty can make fun of a Republican breaking their leg or having their house broken into. Wouldn’t that be cool?

  • http://policingwingnutwelfare.blogspot.com/ JJ

If I can’t make fun of someone who made decisions to torture prisoners and lied in order to go into a war that killed hundreds of thousands of people, who can I make fun of?

  • shepherdwong

Thanks, Karen. You gave me and the missus a chuckle. Mr. Potter indeed.

  • onlystandstoreason1

JJ, by the same argument, if you can’t torture someone who tortures, who can you torture?
    .
Unless, of course, torturing, like mocking guys in wheelchairs, is inherently wrong. Then, it really doesn’t matter what “they” did, one should be accountable to his own actions.

  • http://policingwingnutwelfare.blogspot.com/ JJ

Laughing at a bully is not the worst thing you can do in the world. Somehow I’m not moved by alligator tears in defense of Dick Cheney.

  • onlystandstoreason1

Nice justification for a shameful post by Tumulty. Coming from a party that gets offended if you use the word “articulate”, you would think “compassionate” liberals would be offended by real insults such as this, however, from I see, it only brings out the children in them.

  • davemc321

Stop being a pussy or stop getting in people’s faces with your hatred.

Good advice, only. Why don’t you take it.

  • onlystandstoreason1

    I’m not a pussy.

  • davemc321

Denial is more than a river in Egypt, bud.

  • onlystandstoreason1

Hatred is …. telling people that making fun of guys in wheelchairs is wrong.

Hatred is …. telling people they should be accountable for what they do.

Hatred is …. telling people to treat others they way they want to be treated.

Which definition of hatred are relying on, BTW?

  • onlystandstoreason1

dave, you’re arguments are moronic, lol. Nice try tho, swing and a miss, bud.

  • davemc321

Conflating jokes about a guy with a pulled back muscle with jokes about uterine cancer.

Stay classy, only. And find someone else to talk to. You’re now officially boring.

So, there’s something wrong with being a pussy? It’s OK to make fun of pussies?

Please stop posting for a while. You’re just digging a deeper hole for yourself.

  • Friar Tuck

    So to speak.

  • onlystandstoreason1

Hey, I just Dubya had a kidney stone! Woohoo!

  • sacredh

Cheney will be sitting in a wheelchair for a few days. Big deal. There are over 4000 of our soldiers who have died because of his and Bush’s miscalculation. It’s nothing more than semantics to conclude that ridiculing Cheney because he happens to be a wheelchair means that all liberals ridicule all people in wheelchairs. Dick has earned our disdain. Cheney brought shame upon the office of the vice president, the nation and to our reputation. He shot an old guy in the face hunting in Texas because he thought the guy was a bird. Kind of explains the 5 deferments, doesn’t it? Put Dick in an iron lung. I know I can come up with something on that too.

    KT-CLASSLESS POST!

  • jcapan

Great post Karen–one has to search through the annals of film history to find Cheney’s doppelganger. You simply nailed it.
    -
And as for Mr. Reason (I can’t help feeding him!):
    -
“Stop being a pussy or stop getting in people’s faces with your hatred.”
    -
“what kind of wussies do you hang around?”
    -
    “I’m not a pussy.”
    -
Whoa big fella–I think it’s settled, that you’re not a wus. Please demonstrate your feats of man, or at least Xerox your member and share it for one and all? Allow us to bow to your manhood.
    -
And if a man is a wus or consorts with known wuses, what of him? Torture, banishment? Dare I say it, but you sound a lot like Larry Craig and co. Preemptively defensive about what no one mentioned. Trust us liberals–you can find the outlet you seek so very easily. Meanwhile, to pick up the film theme, we’ll be looking for you in Boys Don’t Cry II.

  • Mr. Nice Guy

I’m the last person to side with Cheney, in any way, but I do agree with “only” on a point or two: this crowd, the Swampland regulars, can be just as mean, petty and vindictive as the “ditto-heads” on the right. I guess “It’s not X if we do it” isn’t limited to Repugs.
