The Bidens

Joe is not the only Biden given to a slip of the tongue here and there:

The wife of Vice President-elect Joe Biden let it slip to Oprah Winfrey Monday that her husband had a pick of two jobs in the Obama administration.

Jill Biden said President-elect Barack Obama gave Biden the choice of being secretary of state or vice president. The vice president-elect tried to hush his wife as soon as the words came out of her mouth, with a loud “shhh!” that sent the audience into laughter.

The Bidens made a surprise appearance on Winfrey’s show, recorded at the Kennedy Center for broadcast later Monday on the eve of the inauguration.

The vice president-elect said he only accepted Obama’s offer to be his running mate after talking it over with “Jilly,” his pet name for his wife. Mrs. Biden said she told him vice president would be better for the family.

“If you’re secretary of state, you’ll be away, we’ll never see you, you know,” she said. “I’ll see you at a state dinner once and awhile. But I said, if you are vice president, the entire family, because they worked so hard for the election, they can be involved. They can come to our home. They can go to events, they can be with us all the time. And that’s what’s important to us.”

Which brought this, um, clarification from Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander:

“Like anyone who followed the presidential campaign this summer, Dr. Jill Biden knew there was a chance that President-elect Obama might ask her husband to serve in some capacity and that, given his background, the positions of Vice President and Secretary of State were possibilities. Dr. Biden’s point to Oprah today was that being Vice President would be a better fit for their family because they would get to see him more and get to participate in serving more. To be clear, President-elect Obama offered Vice President-elect Biden one job only — to be his running mate. And the Vice President-elect was thrilled to accept the offer.”

No word from second choice Hillary Clinton.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Why did I hear a loop of the Married with Children laugh track while (unfortunately) reading this? Maybe this site could concentrate on more important issues than gaffes about palace intrigue.
    .
And, maybe Karen Tumulty can read this with an open mind – making sure to read the original documents from hawaii.gov – to see why I call her a liar.

  • Dee in Columbia MD

KT — you might have added the staff clarification — but come on you know there is some kind of unwritten rule that above all else the media must instigate?

    KT –

You’re right, to the extent you presented both sides of a non-story – particularly a non-story in light of all that’s happening right now. I’m afraid this is on the order of who asked whom to the prom, and the play it’s getting is entirely a function of the media.

KT — I don’t doubt that both sides were presented. I’m suggesting that this is small bore when the moment calls for more. I’m afraid that politicians are not the only ones that will have to step up their game — I’m afraid if the msm doesn’t do a reboot the next post is going to be about the tipping point into oblivion.

Here is what funny about this none story story.
    .
Everyone is just ASSuming that Hillary would have been second choice for VP. Nothing about the story makes that so. All it really means is that there is an off chance that if Joe went for Sec of State that Hillary might have been shut out all together. But of course it makes a more juicy story to make it seem like Joe getting his choice of job kept Hillary from being VP. Then again isn’t it ironic how much import people were putting on the VP slot when Hillary didn’t get it. Then we heard how Secretary of State wasn’t that big of a deal up and until he named her Secretary of State then it turned into a story about her running a “shadow government”. Blah Blah Blah.

While the circumstances of how this came out are bizarre and lead to speculation, the truth is that there was a well-known debate within Obama’s team of where to put Biden in either the ticket or any future Obama administration. Obama respected Biden’s desire to have a stake in foreign policy after years of influence (good or bad, doesn’t matter ) on the issue.

Hillary’s feelings on this are a different matter entirely…

Here, let me make it easier for Karen Tumulty to issue a correction to her past false statement.
    .
    .
On 10/12/08, Tumulty said Actually, we do [know where BHO was born]; it’s Hawaii
    .
    .
The closest we’ve come to “knowing” that are:
    .
    .
    1. A picture on BHO’s website; no court would accept that *picture* (i.e., a picture on a website) as proof, and BHO has not only never shown the original to a court, he fought against showing it to a court.
    .
    2. An ambiguous statement from the state of Hawaii.

    .
    .
Regarding the second, read what they actually said (PDF file). There’s nothing in there confirming he was born in Hawaii; they only said he has a valid cert on file.
    .
    .
Now, go read the Hawaii law that allows those born outside Hawaii to obtain valid certs. That was added in 1982.

    .
    .
You don’t have to be a legal scholar to see that BHO could have a valid cert on file in Hawaii but indicating birth in another state or country. That doesn’t mean that he wasn’t born in Hawaii.

    .
    .
However, it does mean that those – like Tumulty – who claim that where he was born is known are lying.

Here we have another example of one of The Rules that govern how the media behave: no opportunity to attack, belittle, slander, harangue, or otherwise diminish a Clinton is to be passed up under any circumstances. Inventing, twisting, distorting, even straight reporting — otherwise the last thing any of these people want to do — are all allowed, as long as it’s in the service of tarnishing anything and everything Clinton.

I’m curious to see if these people keep it up when she’s acting as SoS, a position that is the face of America to much of the world. A few months ago common sense would have said no, that diminishing such a key figure at this moment in time is too foolish even for our media. But then again, our media people are pretty f*ckin’ foolish.

You know this story is going nowhere when Tweety (he of the thrill up his leg) did not push this with his unusual enthusiasm for all things Clinton (in the negative mode, of course) even with the ever complicit Howard Fineman in place. All we have learned is that both Bidens can be indiscreet. From the excerpt I saw of the Oprah Show Biden looked like a guy who had just broken wind. His wife had already done that. kattest – if it’s a false document, then why would they even bother being ambiguous about it? If this is some grand coverup that’s managed to escape the notice of the authorities, even up to the day before the Inauguration, then why would they issue an ambiguous statement?
    .
Why not just flat-out lie about it?

  • rose83

Exactly. I’m wondering when Obama will – in the media’s eyes – stop owing Hillary Clinton for his spectacular success.
    .
grape_crush, no you’ve mixed your media cliches up. This is a classic, “Let’s humiliate Hillary Clinton and remind everyone that she’s only the first choice of crazy feminists/racists!” story.
    .
I don’t blame KT for writing this though. Jill Biden walked right into it. (And I really like her – she’s not a politician or professional political spouse so she doesn’t know how to avoid falling into media traps.)

  • kattest123

Cliff: I didn’t say anything was a false document. I simply said the “case” hasn’t been proven. Those who say it’s been proven are lying. They’re basing their decision on faith, and not on the facts.
    .
For instance, if Karen Tumulty had said, “I believe BHO when he says he was born in HI” this wouldn’t be an issue.
    .
However, Karen Tumulty stated flat-out that BHO was born in HI, as if it were a fact.
    .
If Barack Smith tried to prove he was born in HI based on what we’ve seen so far, he’d be laughed out of court. That doesn’t mean he’s lying. That just means that anyone who says that it’s a fact that he was born in HI is doing so based on faith.

KT. I admire your dedication in trying to set the record straight about Obama’s birth certificate, but you do realize that if it isn’t the birth certificate it’s going to be something else and then something else and then something else? I’ve been telling people that I voted for Obama because I was convinced he wasn’t a natural born citizen and thought an “outside” perspective was needed.

  • rose83

kattest123, if he were lying he’d say he was born in Ohio.
    .
If she has not absorbed anything all these years past then she has lived in a cocoon.
    .
bitterpill8, from what I’ve read of Jill Biden she does seem to have lived in a cocoon. She doesn’t live in DC, she has her own career (which she’s keeping) and as a Senator’s wife from a safe blue state and even as a prospective first lady on a campaign that was ignored by the media, she hasn’t faced that much media scrutiny.
    .
My guess – and this is pure speculation – is that Obama had a higher opinion of Biden than HRC when he offered him the two posts, but now he has a higher opinion of HRC after Biden ran a weak GE campaign in contrast to HRC’s tireless and relatively gaffe-free efforts. I know my opinion of Biden declined during the GE. He was like McCain: A powerful Senator with a safe seat who faced virtually no consequences when he made bad decisions or stupid statements. Some people can’t handle that lack of accountability. It seemed that both Biden and McCain had trouble adjusting to the demands of a competitive campaign.
    .
pourme, I’m guessing he was also offered the fourth spot on the American Idol judges panel.

  • http://pourmecoffee.blogspot.com pourmecoffee

It’s completely unimportant, but also hysterical. I know I don’t really know Joe Biden, but I think I do. I know people who I think are like him. It’s like he’s a Mormon but the book he wants to share with you is a scrapbook of him that his Mom made.

grape_crush, many of her supporters certainly wanted her to be VP. But no, the media hasn’t suddenly stopped hating the Clintons or strong women. Before Obama picked Biden the media was pushing the whole, “If he picks Hillary she’ll take over, or sabotage him, or distract us so much that McCain will end up winning” story. I loved that last one best… So now they can push the “HRC is humiliated once again” angle.
    .
It’s disturbing to see how much the media loves to hate strong women. But maybe Caroline Kennedy (who I don’t particular like) is enough of a target and they can leave HRC alone for a while!

As for yutsano’s comment, I discuss that here, which is linked from the last link. The announcement did not indicate where he was born, neither the hospital nor the city. It only listed the address of his parents. It’s not proof of anything except that he was born, and we already knew that.
