Top Ten Everything of 2008

Time.com is out with its annual top 10 of everything lists. My favorite so far is “Top 10 Open Mic Moments,” featuring the unexpectedly picked up musings of Jesse Jackson, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Swampland contributor Mike Murphy, among others. (Warning: Sometimes they use language not allowed on Swampland.)

Also see the top 10 campaign videos, top 10 outrageous earmarks, top 10 political lines, and the top 10 election photos. Also, of course, top 10 campaign gaffes. The full list of lists is here.

What was left out? Let us know in the comments.

    With Saturday Victories, Romney Retakes Control of the GOP Narrative

    Mitt Romney, the perpetually questioned front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, had a rough week. Three embarrassing losses to Rick Santorum in Tuesday’s non-binding contests led to questions about Romney’s conservative bona fides just in time for GOP activists, gathering at their annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, to collectively grumble about it. But in two narrow, largely symbolic victories on Saturday, Romney reclaimed the headlines. Never mind the details. He was winning again.

    Fascinating. No McCain or Palin clips. I guess the embarrassing moments were all on mic?

    I’d suggest the Top Ten Journalistic Whitewashes of McCain’s Campaign. Fortunately the top eight had already played out by September..

    There’s a separate gaffe reel. I see McCain is he first.

    My highlight is still Carney’s reaction shot to Scarborough just effin’ his way through the program.

    @MS,
    JJ’s link reminds me,
    You’ve been more attuned than many to the debate over interrogation techniques. Can we anticipate any more substantive posts? This one’s fun – but there is a lot of serious stuff going on too.)

    I’d second Dirks’ request, MS. I’d also recommend what digby said.

    Here’s mine: Rush, Savage, Hannity, Kristol, O’Reilly, Newt Gingrich, Chris Matthews, Fox & Friends, Rev Wright and Maureen Dowd.

    I second this request. I’d also like to see “Top Ten Moments From the McCain Barbecue”. We’ve all seen the footage of Holly Bailey on the tire swing and Jon Martin giving Cindy flowers, but I thin there’s a lot more there.

    Is the tanking number of comments a symptom of the massive layoffs of cubicle jockeys?
    .
    Or, having found ourselves on the precipice of total collapse, and the media having either failed to warn us of the coming storm or having participated in the culture of distraction that prevented our recognition of that storm AND having shouted down/silenced the few brave souls pointing to the approaching disaster AND having laid off reporters in order to better afford the likes of Bill Kristol and David Broder…have people just given up on these clowns? So unfair!

    This is a dead thread, but I’m going to make some suggestions for the gaffe list. First, I don’t think “spreading the wealth” was a gaffe. The Republicans and some of the MSM tried to spin it that way, but spreading the wealth in a time of unprecedented inequality – oh right, it’s not unprecedented: it’s at 1929 levels – isn’t radical or socialist. It’s common sense. Second, how did Snipergate not make the list? That was a huge gaffe. OTOH, the RFK remark was something only slightly paranoid Obama supporters briefly got upset about. IMO, a gaffe should genuinely be stupid, not just something that seems stupid when people try to interpret it that way. Also, I know it was impossible to include all of Palin’s gaffes. But the first amendment one was my favorite. The Vice-President’s duties one was also great. Basically, one of Palin’s efforts to interpret the constitution should have made the list. Finally, Biden’s remark about Clinton was neither really stupid or a big campaign story. It doesn’t match his classic FDR/television gaffe.
