Your Holiday Mammogram Reminder

Last week, following my annual mammogram at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In Sutu (DCIS). While this is commonly referred to as early stage breast cancer, it is technically not cancer but rather pre-cancer, as it has not become invasive.

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that women over 40 get mammograms “every 1 to 2 years.” Those under 40 should also get regular screenings if there is a family history of breast cancer.

Mitt Romney, the perpetually questioned front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, had a rough week. Three embarrassing losses to Rick Santorum in Tuesday’s non-binding contests led to questions about Romney’s conservative bona fides just in time for GOP activists, gathering at their annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, to collectively grumble about it. But in two narrow, largely symbolic victories on Saturday, Romney reclaimed the headlines. Never mind the details. He was winning again.

IF you have health insurance and IF your insurance covers it or IF you can afford to pay for it out of pocket.

Mammograms are available to women whether or not they have insurance or can afford to pay for it out of pocket. There are women’s clinics all over this country that offer free mammograms. Just google “where to get a free mammogram in ….” for a program.
