Jack Black Is Jesus

But that is not the most interesting thing about this clip, from Funny or Die, called “Prop 8 — The Musical.” I eagerly await the day when 3-minute musicals become a major vehicle for debate about public policy. Just imagine: “TARP — The Musical,” “Stem Cell — The Musical,” and “Defense Appropriations Subcommittee — The Musical.”

At CPAC, Romney Stresses Conservative Credentials

Three days after a trifecta of losses underlined lingering questions about his ability to win over the Republican Party’s base, Mitt Romney arrived at CPAC to allay skeptics’ fears. Throughout his second bid for the GOP nomination, Romney has made his business bona fides the centerpiece of his candidacy. But on Friday, before a packed room at the annual conservative confab, he sought to emphasize the record he compiled in Massachusetts. “I was a severely conservative governor,” he told the crowd. “I know conservatism, because I have lived conservatism.”

Mired in the Sticky Politics of Health and Faith, Obama Shifts on Contraception

In the face of mounting pressure from Catholic leaders and politicians, the White House on Friday tweaked its position on contraception coverage mandates in the Affordable Care Act. Rather than require large religious institutions like Catholic colleges and hospitals to provide employees with free health insurance coverage for contraception, insurance companies themselves will have to pick up the tab.

I reserve the right to still not insult Michael.
    .
That’s all I have to say about this post.

  • Cliff

trifecta, you may want to reconsider your strategy. I feel like you’re creating a negative-space insult, a complete absence of insults that is shaped exactly like an insult.
Seems like that would defeat your purpose.
    .
As for MS’s post – anything to do with the defense budget has already been adequately portrayed by PacMan.

As a great fan of musical theater, I agree. It’s the only way I’ll ever be afford to see it. In fact, I think the whole first week or so of the TARP battle (including McCain’s suspension of his campaign, the dissing of Letterman, the madness at the White House meeting, the Pelosi partisan dissing and Bill O’Reilly’s scenery-chewing tirade at Barney Frank) would be the best thing since Sweeny Todd. Did I miss any great dramatic moments?

Someone has to be working on a Sarah Palin opera. Gold mine.

  • dzheyms

If AMC were around, she’d point out that Jack Black was in a Jesus-themed musical sketch on Mr. Show, Jeepers Creepers Semi-Star:

    > Sarah Palin opera

Opera? Shouldn’t it be a farce? Maybe the Python crew are up to it. National Lampoon?

  • Andy from MA

I think I would’ve preferred Mel Brooks as Jesus, but c’est la vie. As for the opera, if only Gilbert and Sullivan lived in the 21st century.

Opera? Shouldn’t it be a farce? Maybe the Python crew are up to it. National Lampoon?
I was thinking Opera buffa. A sweeping, comic WTF for the ages. But I’d settle for a Christopher Guest film.

I think Mitt Romney would make a great Gay Czar. He could take over right after he fixes the little problem we are having with the Autos.

  • Andy from MA

    Gunny,

For gay czar, how about Lindsey Graham, or Anita Bryant?

  • gysgt213

Andy-If we can’t get Mittens it absolutely has to be Lindsey. Anita gets kinda of cranky don’t you think?

  • jarais

I heard Charlie Crist is getting married. But I’d nominate him for gay czar anyway.

TPM is reporting that AP is reporting that:
    .
Former U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Rachel K. Paulose retaliated against a top prosecutor in her office who reported her for careless handling of classified homeland security reports, a watchdog agency said Wednesday.
    .
In announcing a whistleblower settlement between Assistant U.S. Attorney John Marti and the Justice Department, the Office of Special Counsel said its investigation found that Paulose retaliated by taking steps to remove Marti as her first assistant. Marti accepted a demotion and returned to being an assistant U.S. attorney.
    .
Notice how this type of stuff flys under the radar. Every single time.

    “Wasillalot,” perhaps?

    So conflicted.
    So conflicted.
Jack Black not only never makes me laugh but actually somehow makes me angry. On the other hand Neil Patrick Harris always cracks me up.
Tie breaker is Craig Robinson from The Office in the background.
    Thumbs up.

  • Paul-no not that one

Gunny, for what it is worth the Paulose story is number 7 on the most popular story list at the Minneapolis Star Tribune’s web site.
Behind 3 recount stories and 3 Vikings stories. I think you are right about under the radar.

    Great!
    .
Bank of America CEO’s strategy: Hoard cash for next 6 months
    .
The immediate future will continue to be rough, but the recession should shift to economic recovery sometime next year, the chief executives of three of Charlotte’s largest employers and a top Federal Reserve Bank official said Wednesday.
    .
The panel of business titans warned of short-term obstacles but shared long-term optimism at the Charlotte Chamber’s seventh annual Economic Outlook Conference, which drew more than 650 people to the Westin Charlotte hotel uptown.
    .
Joining the three CEOs — Ken Lewis of Bank of America, Bob Steel of president of the Fed district that includes the Carolinas.
    .
While economic indicators have deteriorated this year, Lacker said he expected the U.S. economy “to regain positive momentum sometime in 2009.”
    .
Lewis agreed: “I do see a ray of sunshine out there in about six months or so.” Until then, Lewis said, households and companies should hoard cash and capital, and those who are optimistic can look for good investments — perhaps at a discount in the downturn.
    .
Steel echoed that strategy, saying investors must walk a tightrope between being “prudent and cautious” and pouncing on great opportunities.
    .
Lacker said his optimism for a 2009 upturn came from lower interest rates, lower energy and commodity prices, and a bottoming out of the housing market. Lacker noted, however, that he also predicted a next-year bottoming-out in housing the past two years.

Cute video! I loved it when I saw it at HotAir earlier today, but they usually beat out Time anyway so it’s cool. I especially enjoyed the mocking of religion, especially someone crossing themselves. I know if I were a liberal I’d concentrate on making fun of people crossing themselves!

Thanks, Michael Scherer, and thanks “liberals” too!

Meanwhile, here’s the first item at my site. Certainly not the most important thing I’ve ever discussed, but pretty much anything at my site is something that the hacks at Time won’t tell you. Instead, all they’re good for is buffing.

  • Mr. Nice Guy

Hey, MS, if you’re still reading this thread, can you do something about – or have something done about – the “newline” handling in the blog, here? It’s annoying to need the ‘.’ fillers. I know you were able to work some magic with the “naughty word” filter, so here’s hoping you can pull another rabbit out of your hat.

  • michaelscherer

mr nice guy, i don’t know what you are talking about. please explain what “newline” means.

  • FlownOver

    MS:
    .
I’m pretty sure he means the inability to double- (or triple-, or more)space between paragraphs in our comments. The workaround in the new (@#!*%&) format has been to hit return, type a period (hence ‘.’) and hit return again. Under the far-superior prior format (maybe you remember – the one with the Preview function?) a double return typed in the comment box produced a blank line before beginning a new paragraph in the published comment.
    .
I second Mr. Nice Guy’s request, and in fact urge you to get us back the old format or something much like it. We’ve been waiting since the unpleasant shutdown shortly before the election. Obama’s ben able to assemble both a national security team and an economic team since then, while the High Sheriffs have managed to assemble nothing but… nothing.

  • FlownOver

See? If I had access to Preview I wouldn’t have misspelled “been.”

  • kattest123

    I have three requests:
    ^
    1. Joining in righteous solidarity with my comrades, we demand that Swampland adds in real linebreaks.
    ^
    2. My comrades also demand that Swampland restores the comments on its archives. All the comments left before the changeover have been deleted.
    ^
    3. On an existential note, if I modified my Swampland greasemonkey add-on so instead of simply getting rid of Wonkette’s posts it also got rid of posts by Scherer, Klein, Tumulty, Carney, Newton-Small, and Murphy, would Swampland cease to exist?

The high sheriffs have been able to to accomplish as much as Reid has…and they did it without sucking up to Lieberman.
    .
MS: Check out Gunny’s comment #20. All those periods between his paragraphs? They are commenters’ bailing wire for proper “newlines”.
    .
re: “Prop 8 – The Musical”. Cute, yes. Perhaps this is the answer to us Boomer/GenX cuspers who grew up on “Schoolhouse Rock”. Donno much about policy…but put it to music, and I can come to grips with it.

Say…do you suppose that’s what Josh is onto with his “Today in 100 Seconds” segments…?

    Not for long…..

  • davemc321

Pardon me for being dense, Gunny, but what do you mean ‘under the wire?’
    .
If you mean mainstream reporting, AP isn’t exactly under the wire. But if you mean how long it took the media to pay attention to the hinkey doings in the AG’s office, I’m behind you.
    .
True story: When I was a reporter, I got a call from another reporter in San Diego, asking any of the fed attorneys general in Texas were being fired. He then told me about Carol Lam. Interesting, I thought. And called my editor. When I told him none in Texas were under fire, he said, “Then we’re not interested.” That’s carrying “Local news first” a wee bit too far.

  • formerlyjames

MS that was funny. A little work and it could get to Broadway. But, shellfish is a sin? Oh, dear, I must go pray on this and consult the Bible. If that is true, I don’t know if I can be redeemed after all these years. Who decides when you get to heaven? The older Bible writers, or the new ones? Can Jesus help? I am so confused.
