At CPAC, Romney Stresses Conservative Credentials

Three days after a trifecta of losses underlined lingering questions about his ability to win over the Republican Party’s base, Mitt Romney arrived at CPAC to allay skeptics’ fears. Throughout his second bid for the GOP nomination, Romney has made his business bona fides the centerpiece of his candidacy. But on Friday, before a packed room at the annual conservative confab, he sought to emphasize the record he compiled in Massachusetts. “I was a severely conservative governor,” he told the crowd. “I know conservatism, because I have lived conservatism.”

Mired in the Sticky Politics of Health and Faith, Obama Shifts on Contraception

In the face of mounting pressure from Catholic leaders and politicians, the White House on Friday tweaked its position on contraception coverage mandates in the Affordable Care Act. Rather than require large religious institutions like Catholic colleges and hospitals to provide employees with free health insurance coverage for contraception, insurance companies themselves will have to pick up the tab.

I used to love Dan Patrick, but then he turned into a bitter prick when everbody else blew up but him.

I saw this Young Turks clip on youtube today from 2 years ago and Cenk Uygur was very prescient in predicting that KO would blow up primarily because he chose to start taking on Bill O and FoxNews. Check it out

[...] As somebody who has traditionally eschewed cable news for other information idioms, the first “Special Comment” I saw was when Keith tore Hillary a new one for the RFK reference some time last spring. It was pretty awesome. Anyway, as much as it saddens me to say this, I might have to agree with Mike Scherer here and ask “Who Can Say When the Shark Jumps?“ [...]

  • judgementz

Haha he is like the bizzaro Hannity. Both pundits from alternate dimensions.

Didn’t Jump The Shark jump the shark about 5 years ago?

I bet all the McCain insiders that MS has been cultivating relationships with the last year or so have been emailing that one around like crazy.

I personally miss the days when “Blackberry” meant usually a specific well known shrub and its fruit and not a device permanently wedged up a journo’s ass.

Actually, I was kidding. It is a compilation of short cuts of Keith in “full outrage” using clips from probably 30 different “special comments.” Kind of funny, but I think the Palin idea would be funnier given that Keith loves words and words are Palin’s enemies.

Given that his counterparts on the right are much more extreme in their language, much less honest in their content, and have been doing this for a much longer period of time, I would think similar compilations for Hannity and Orally and ilk with similar “shark jumping” post titles would be appropriate. Assuming, of course, that it is possible for RWingers to be so extreme as to jump a shark in the eyes of the msm.

Thanks Michael, that’s a fun piece. For all his rants, he’s infinitely more entertaining than his evil twin, O’Reilly. Interesting their names start with the same letter. Interesting an O is the symbol of an open mouth, which both excel at.

Nice to have an intelligent counterpoint, I must say, to those gasbags Limbaugh and O’Reilly after all these years of aural and visual abuse from the aforementioned hatemongers.

At least Keith does it with considerable intellect and style.

    Also.

While I agree “jumped the shark” has indeed jumped the shark, none of my english teachers in high school would ever allow me to get the subject and objects to get mixed up.* And the shark stays still. One jumps the shark. The shark jumps for no man, etc etc etc.

*Nor would they like that sentence.

  • http://jonorato42.wordpress.com/ John O

Well, my last obscenity and ad hominem free comment was mysteriously deleted, but I’ll try again just for the fun of it.

KO goes too far for me from time to time. But he tries to be honest and factual, and he apologizes with no excuses when he blows one. Mostly I don’t see him preaching a lot of personal hate. I see him preaching against what I consider violations of Constitutional and American principles.

All in all, a funny video and a reminder, as so many above have pointed out, that at least there’s now a counterbalance to the zillion-dollar voices at FOX “news” who have been polluting our airwaves with outright lies for years and years.

Olbermann tries very hard not to be a liar, we should give him that.

  • trifecta

PALIN: Gah! Nothing specific right now. Sitting here in these chairs that I’m going to be proposing but in working with these governors who again on the front lines are forced to and it’s our privileged obligation to find solutions to the challenges facing our own states every day being held accountable, not being just one of many just casting votes or voting present every once in a while, we don’t get away with that. We have to balance budgets and we’re dealing with multibillion dollar budgets and tens of thousands of employees in our organizations.
    .

  • throwlands

after watching that video i feel strangely vindicated of the need to watch KO this evening.

  • dennisdenuto114

I don’t see this as funny at all. The man cares. He’s wrong sometmie, but I also had a sense that he wasn’t faking it (which is what this video tries to insinuate, I think). While the rest of the media stood around and let O’Reilly and Limbaugh make the world safe for hate and torture, he at least gave a d@mn!

  • mccainfluffer

The editing trick on Olbermann doesn’t really say much. What I am curious about is why Olbermann rubs people like Michael Scherer the wrong way? Maybe it’s because KO showed courage by calling out Bush when other journalists, like MS, were silent.

  • acidj

You know what would *really* be funny? Michael Scherer tied to a chair, ball gag in his mouth, dressed like a mime. Lined up at the door is a great gross of Swampland commenters, each armed with a freshly caught salmon. One by one they file in, wind up, and land a scaley smack on his insolent cheek.
    .

  • wvng

I do hope many of you have written to your senator about Lieberman. Maddow last night should have been the final nail in the coffin for anyone who thinks he should keep his HS chair.

  • http://pourmecoffee.blogspot.com pourmecoffee

@sgw – I’m worried what might happen to you if Lieberman keeps his chair. We’re all worried.

  • sgwhiteinfla

    pourme
    .
Actually nothing will happen. I am fervent in saying he shouldn’t keep the chair and if he does keep it I will cheer for him to stab them in the back over and over again but I will move on. I am pretty much used to dissappointment with the Democratic party so I am going in pretty much believing they are all going line up to kiss Lieberman’s azz and beg him to stay in the caucus even though he hates their guts. But that just makes me want to fight harder to push them away from such cowardice. Its decisions like this one that will define this new congress and there really is no good case for allowing him to keep his chairmanship other than trying to get one vote that he likely won’t give them any damm way. Like I said a couple of threads ago its why I switched from being a Dem to a registered independent because while I am in agreement with the overwhelming amount of the Democratic platform, their real weakness as a party leaves a lot to be desired.

My poor little doggie has spent the entire night hiding underneath the bed.

  • sgwhiteinfla

Mike Scherer if you want to do a HUGE story you can do a story on how FoxNews had one of the most prescient voices on their Financial Shows and chose to ridicule him and have others like Ben Stein continue to recommend that people buy stocks in Merrill Lynch and other financials. This guy comes out looking like a damm oracle and they treated him like he was a tool. And then you have Bill O’Reilly on the same network shouting down Barney Frank when he should be shouting down Neil Cavuto!

  • wvng

sgw @8:26, you must be kidding. Come on now. That would, in the first instance, apply the principle of “balance” to stories about the right, which is never done. Because, of course, IOKIYAR. It would also interject “accuracy” into MS’ reporting as it applies to Republicans. Again, never done.

  • sgwhiteinfla

    wvng
    .
LOL I throw out stories Scherer could do all the time precisely because I know he WON’T do them. I was pretty surprised about his story on excess spending in the military that eviscerated some Republicans (he did have some obligatory false equivalency with Dems but I could accept that). But then I saw that it was written 4 years ago at Salon. Now that he is free to write republican hackery for TIME I doubt we will see that level of reporting again.

Scherer’s job, apparently, is to throw tomatoes at the Democrats. This edit job is neither clever nor insightful. Man, I wish the media would use it’s voice to bring light to issues we otherwise can’t see. At least the anti-Emanuel post below some information, although the hue of the light shown was still red, red, red.

    .
The funny thing is KO played the clip last night on his show and actually was able to laugh at himself and said “good job”. Can you imagine Bill O or Hannity doing that? HEEEYAAALLL NOES. But KO is the pundit folks like Scherer love to hate. I wonder why….

  • Deggjr

That’s an interesting question young Michael Scherer. If you were trying to answer it, first look at Rush Limbaugh. He seems to be doing well, still.
    .
Limbaugh went from an administration critic to an administration cheerleader. Will Olbermann make the same transition or will he be a permanent angry guy a la Lewis Black?
    .
Michael, why don’t you INTERVIEW Olbermann? You’re a reporter, right?
    .
I caught Rachel Maddow last night and also thought she was great (also). Truth to power will never jump the shark.

  • wvng

“Truth to power will never jump the shark.”
    .
Absolutely. I can’t imagine either Maddow or Olberman deferring to the Obama administration. I see them reporting accurately on what they do and how they do it. I envision kudos when they do well. And I envision “special comments” when they do badly. And that is all for the good.
    .
BTW, did you all notice how much Maddow’s segment last night on Lieberman felt like a Maddowified special comment?

  • wvng
  • http://ktheintz.wordpress.com/ kth

Eh. I’m a KO fan, but I’d rather see fewer “special comments” and more food thrown at wingnuts (his lugubrious reading of Rich Lowry’s infamous “starbursts” blog post was epic). Like Elvis Costello sang, “I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused”; by now the right reaction to Bush and the right isn’t Swiftian outrage, but the sheer amazement characteristic of Pope’s Dunciad.

  • Andy from MA

I’m going to be a conspiracy theorist about the KO/O’Reilly feud. Both individuals worked at the same TV station in Boston in 80s. My guess is that they crossed swords, there, and perhaps O’Reilly played a role in getting KO fired.
    .
This has rankled KO to this day.

  • davemc321

Wow, kth, that’s the first reference to Pope’s Dunciad I’ve ever seen in any conversation, much less a political one. Kudos.

  • cincinnatus est exterminata!

Keith Olbermann has more journalistic integrity in his morning stool that Michael Scherer will ever have. Also, Keith Olbermann’s stool looks like less of a douchebag than MS.
