Ron Klain

Roll Call reports that Joe Biden has asked brainy, all-around Washington insider Ron Klain to be his chief of staff–a move that would have Klain in the same White House role that he played for former Vice President Al Gore. Klain’s ties to Biden, however, go back in even further. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Klain worked for Biden as chief counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee. (Klain also did stints chief of staff to Tom Daschle in the Senate, and Janet Reno at the Justice Department.)

So will Kevin Spacey play Klain in the next movie, too? And more importantly in my household, will he still have time to coach our sixth-grade rec league basketball team?

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

I got a fever. And the only thing that is going to make me feel better is some more Sarah Palin on my teeeveee.

  • trifecta

gysgt, I am almost longing for a missing white woman at this point. Or a shark, or something else to distract Wolf Blitzer.

  • gysgt213

Well tri, I’m going to get right in there witcha. You betcha.

  • trifecta

What if a shark attacked Sarah Palin, and she went missing afterwards?

  • gysgt213

As a matter of fact doggone it. I’m going to plow right through the door. If god doesn’t make me miss it.

  • gysgt213

Okay. Let’s have a just a tad respect for the sharks. Sarah is our problem.

Did I enter an alternative universe where the essence of Sarah has infiltrated everyone’s closed circulatory system?

  • trifecta

Well Dee. Cable tv has informed us that this is all that matters. Cable tv never lies to us either.

Ambinder has a post about the topic at hand, noting that Obama is going very insidery with his picks. He wants to do radical change with conventional people under the theory that staffing the white house with a bunch of George Snufflefulguses isn’t going to get the results he wants.

    It’s all about the Village.

The only upside I see to ‘All Sarah All the Time’ TV is that it’s a constant reminder to Lieberman that McCain chose her instead of him. Makes me feel all toasty.

    KT here–

Yes, it’s all about the village, and we only believe this “country first” thing so be taken so far. Ron refuses to confirm or deny the reports, but says in an email that he had already arranged for someone else to coach the team (which he has done for several years), as he believes the kids are beyond his own knowledge of the game. However, he says he will continue to manage the team. He’s clearly thinking of himself as “chief of staff” for the Cougars.

As the new President and Vice President are choosing their cabinet(s), it is still important to keep in mind the other concerning manners happening not only with the United States but also around the world. The Global Poverty Act is an act that would help cut the global poverty/hunger in half by 2015 with the help of the Millennium Development Goal. The Borgen Project is helping to do their part by bringing attention to this fact. To find out more go to http://www.borgenproject.org!
