Sarah Palin: Don’t Blame Me

CNN’s Dana Bash has an interview:

BASH: One more question about the election that just ended yesterday. If you look at some of the polls and you talk to people who are really crunching the numbers and specifically who voted what way and who was swayed one way or the other. Independent voters, suburban voters, some of the people — women. People who the campaign thought you would be able to help, actually looked at your presence on the ticket and said, I’m going to vote the other way. What do you make of that?

PALIN: Well, you know, I don’t think anybody should give Sarah Palin that much credit that I would trump an economic, woeful time in this nation that occurred about two months ago that my presence on the ticket would trump the economic crisis that America found itself in a couple of months ago and attribute John McCain’s loss to me.

But now having said that, if I cost John McCain even one vote, I am sorry about that because John McCain, I believe, is the American hero. I had believed that it was his time. He being so full of courage and wisdom and experience. That valor that he just embodies. I believe he would have been the best pick. But that is not the Americans’ choice at this time.

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

What did you think about the newsweek article about Sarah Palin spending even more than what has been exposed?

Sarah Palin a person who talks about herself in the third person…egad. She is definatly a closed chapter in a book that never should have been written.

“…John McCain, I believe, is the American hero. (…) He being so full of courage and wisdom and experience. That valor that he just embodies.”
    .
    .
This is the republican’s downfall in a nutshell. Palin lists the reasons why McCain should have won- and it’s all about biography. The American people don’t care, they want someone that will face our problems with well designed plans. Obama gave the impression that he’d formulate thoughtful, non-partisan, nuanced solutions — McCain talked about personality.
    .
We’ll see if the repubs can re-group and, perhaps, bring fiscal conservatives back into the fold while booting the social conservatives- as I see it, that’s the way they need to go (after 8 yrs).

  • trifecta

I was actually reading it in Palin’s dialect. I am glad we are done with that. The Newsweek story today though is just the beginning.

She literally talks that way all the time. 4 years of that would have been pretty awful.

KT — I’m late to the party today, having slept off my post-election hangover on planes to lovely Cedar Rapids, IA.
But I wanted to join my voice to the chorus of thanks for bringing us “the inside scoop” on this election. Great job, and good luck!
Hope now you can get some rest and fun, without having to sacrifice all that campaign food.
Still waiting for those inside-the-plane photos, though…

  • Joe Bftsplk

Back on topic, Sarah Palin “splits”. Everyone and everything is ALL good, or ALL bad. Since that thinking applies to herself, and she obviously considers herself “good”, it follows that she quite literally can’t do anything wrong — If I (or these here “good” people) did it, it’s right by definition. If there’s a problem, that’s the Democrats’ fault.
The scary thing about such a person is that they can argue so forcefully and convincingly, because they really sincerely believe they’re right — NOT lying. The difference between her and some others I’ve known (I could name you a certain famous basketball coach) is that she’s not smart enough to fool anyone smart.
People, political parties, and religions that think like that must not be entrusted with power.

  • Cliff

Hey, does Babel Fish do a Palin-English translation? Because I cannot for the life of me figure out what she is saying there.

  • kathy

I’m glad she’s out of the national political area for awhile, but I confess to being fascinated with the way she talks. She reads worse than she sounds, and so it’s interesting that she can make something that isn’t a sentence sound almost reasonable when she’s saying it.
    .
Like Bush she’s incurious and ignorant, as opposed to unintelligent – though I don’t suppose she’s a mental giant, either. Also like Bush (or I should say…) Like Bush she shouldn’t be misunderestimated also.
    .
It’s occurring to me just now how much she’s like Diana Wales in some ways. Chosen for looks, undereducated, treated like an accessory, blamed when things don’t go right for the principal, scheming, and very appealing to her constituency (I should admit, I guess, that I adored Diana).

    Kathy, Interesting comparison with Diana.

  • Andy from MA

Kathy, let’s not write her off yet!
    A scenario:
    .
Felon Ted Stevens is re-elected. He is expelled by the Senate.
    .
Special election time. Sarah runs for Senate (campaigns are more fun than governing) to “reform DC” by continuing to bring back pork to AK.
    .
Back to the future with Caribou Barbie.

  • Joe Bftsplk

Kathy, she sounds better than she reads because she speaks with absolute confidence — see my post above.

  • Andy from MA

Joe, she’s never in doubt, but often wrong.

  • kathy

    Joe – agreed.
    .
Andy – yeah, I think she’d probably run for Ted’s seat. But I don’t know she’d get it. Ted got re-elected (if that’s true) because of seniority. SP doesn’t have any, and Alaska just might realize they’d get more pork with a Democrat than with a Republican, under the circumstances. And it’s all about pork in Alaska.

  • kathy

  • Andy from MA

Kathy, pardon the pun but something’s not kosher with your logic. Regardless of party the new AK senator would have zero seniority.

I think they’d go for Sarah in a big way. She could do less damage to the state by being in DC than she can by being in Juneau.

In a sense, she’s right. McCain picked out of spite (to the Republicans who wouldn’t let him have Lieberman), cynical sexism (“I’ll give the Hillary supporters a girl! heh heh heh”) and impetuousity (just like the ‘campaign suspension). Furthermore, he didn’t have the guts or the integrity to rein her in when she started to morph into Father McCoughlin/Joe McCarthy, even though I can’t imagine he didn’t know about the spike in threats to the Obamas, and the hideous response she provoked among the racists and knuckle-draggers at their rallies.

All in all, Palin’s place on the ticket revealed why John McCain is/was unfit for the Presidency at least as much as it revealed her own inadequacies.

    KT, a question.
    .
How come the Republican talking point that I have heard everybody from Karl Rove to Tom Coburn use is that we are still a center-right country. How come several journalists repeat it as fact? On some social issues such as gay marriage, I would agree, although that is mostly generational. On abortion, on health care, on Iraq, on progressive taxation, most of the country is center-left. Why don’t journalists mention that as they are repeating the talking points of the RNC about where the electorate is on issues.
    .
Or more to the point, when these points get brought up by the Broder wing of the press, why isn’t polling data used to either refute or enforce this point used instead of everybody repeating what everyone else is saying? Do most people who make under $100,000 a year prefer that they get smaller tax cuts to give larger ones to the wealthy? Really? You wouldn’t know. We are a center right country after all.

(CNN) — Randy Scheunemann, a senior foreign policy adviser to John McCain, was fired from the Arizona senator’s campaign last week for what one aide called “trashing” the campaign staff, three senior McCain advisers tell CNN.

One of the aides tells CNN that campaign manager Rick Davis fired Scheunemann after determining that he had been in direct contact with journalists spreading “disinformation” about campaign aides, including Nicolle Wallace and other officials.

“He was positioning himself with Palin at the expense of John McCain’s campaign message,” said one of the aides.

  • theoriginaljames

I think Palin is right. She sure can’t be blamed for the clumsy McCain campaign, or the damage already done. She didn’t help, other than the RRCB, the Republican Religious Crazy Base. She is who she is, and bears no blame for the Republican defeat. They had already taken care of that before we even knew who she was.

I respectfully disagree about McCain’s concession speech. I have heard many people talk about how great it was. In my opinion it was very mediocre and only focused on the fact that Obama was the first black president. After months of saying Obama is un American and un fit for the job of POTUS he needed to say a he!! of a lot more than that to impress me. And as for his supporters booing, thats exactly what he has primed them to do for the past three months whenever he has said Barack Obama’s name so what did he really expect would happen? Phuck John McCain and the horse he rode in on!

SG: I understand your anger. I disagree with you about its delivery. Salter wrote a great concession speech and McCain delivered it with sincerity. My wife and I watched it from different cities and when we talked about it this morning, we both concluded that had McCain used this demeanor (I’m not saying it is who he really is) during the whole campaign, he might have emerged victorious. Thankfully, he didn’t. But he set a tone (not that he really feels this way) of respect and reconciliation; something that was needed after his and Sarah’s toxic, reprehensable behavior on the trail.

  • Joe Bftsplk

I’m with you, sgw. I thought McCain sounded very insincere, just going through the motions. I understand he doesn’t get along with the teleprompter, but still…

“never in doubt, but often wrong” …… this is the definition of ANY form of ultra-religious zealot. “True faith” requires a near blind acceptance of things that are not supported by evidence in an attempt to reach goals that have no reasonable expectation of being achievable.
    .
It also has the nasty habit of being very “exclusive” vice being “inclusive” because the premise is that if your religion is “right”, then by default anyone who does not agree with you is “wrong”.
    .
This is a very, very, very dangerous combination. Look no further than your history books about Christianity or Islam when emboldened with military and political power. You’ll find the source of some of the bloodiest conflicts in human history. Anytime you hear someone in a position of influence start labeling entire societies as “good” or “evil”, buyer beware.

I’m sorry but I have to say she makes look W. look downright articulate. Thankfully/hopefully, Hillary’s razor sharp wit and command of the issues, not to mention tenacity, is what most will take away from this historic election. Hill won’t have another shot (nor will Palin, I’m convinced) but she sure made the path of the next woman to run for POTUS a lot easier.

The banner was very much up for grabs until Obama grabed it while they sat around dishing out the aged red meat. Of course it doesnt help thier case that historically deomcrats are better for the economy, but hey, in theory a republican could help the economy, if they werent threatened with the plank whenever they showed some creative thought.

Ah, next time pick a running mate that is not a dried up bitter old man with a trophy wife.

    Eric
    .
I had this conversation with my cousin yesterday. Imagine for just a moment that the day Lehman Brothers files for bankruptcy that John McCain goes in front of the microphone and says these words “Today one of the major investment houses in our country’s history has filed for bankruptcy. This is an indication of a serious problem going on with Wall Street. It is for that reason that I have asked my VP candidate Mitt Romney to explore some solutions to the coming financial crisis so that we can stay ahead of this problem. I now cede the microphone to the man who helped save the Olympics….”
    .
We might all be singing quite a different tune today.
    .
Boy am I glad he DIDN’T lol

exactly – what a nightmare that wouldve been
    .
and you know what – I have little doubt Obama wouldve out performed Mitt on economic policy and leadership anyway – but wouldve been a squeekers instead of a neo-landslide, without Sarah Palin pulling McCain to the bottom of the sea.
    .
Wouldve really given Obama the ride of his life – I dont want to think about that alternative universe – But I bet somebody in the Obama camp must be counting on something like this in 2012 – a competent republican ticket to run against.

were going to see a huge crater in consumption instead of a holiday spike this year, jobless claims, everything is negative, Yahoo is nolonger in a position to give the finger to microsoft. I cant find any goodnews when looking at the economy – I think people are going to start asking for Obama to step up before he has any authority to do so.
    .
Obama better have his team ready and working long before inauguration.

She’ll blame the elitist Washington handlers. She’ll just say they’re lying. She just has to cite the “Wasilia hillybilly” line, sgw, to make her point. These attacks are also very sexist–and the all the women who identify with her as one of them will be personally offended.

  • http://www.inworldstudios.com jayackroyd

Oh, and I forgot, sgw. Red State has started operation leper.
    .
Yes, the McCain people are trying to get out in front and blame Palin. But, um, they ran this campaign. They picked her. As they say wrt the Sarkozy mess, the McCain campaign had her schedule, and the call was set three days before it took place..
    .
The takeaway is going to be that this is typical McCain-style improvisation and dice throwing.
    .
This also partly depends on whether McCain wants to bother to rehabilitate himself. If he does, he’ll distance himself still further from the base, who is already blaming him for not being true to the wingnut cause.
    .
    Very messy.

    jay,
    .
I saw that operation leper deal on redstate but what if that list grows so long that it starts to encompass most of the thinking moderate republicans of the party? I am d@mn near convinced that we are going to have a new party come out of this infighting within the Republican party. And maybe those of us with liberal leanings can go on some of these websites like redstate or free republic and move that meme along. It would go something like
    .
“If the Republican party doesnt want to stick to its conservative roots, then we should break free and become a REAL third party option. The Conservative party would be great for a center-right country and we can push Sarah Palin as our leader and presidential candidate starting today. Who is coming with me???”
    .
    Seriously I hope it happens.

If Sarah Palin was not looking at 2012 we would walk away and leave her alone. But many of the GOP base think she is their future – so she remains a topic of discussion. Sarah Palin needs to be derailed before she can totally destroy the GOP. …………..

Ohg, you say “before she can totally destroy the GOP” as if it’s a bad thing…

  • johnfarrelly

Sarah needs to learn that she cost him the election by moving the campaign way to the right.
