AP Uncalls Minnesota Senate Race
WASHINGTON
The Associated Press is uncalling the Minnesota Senate race.

Republican Sen. Norm Coleman finished ahead of Democrat Al Franken early Wednesday in the final vote count, but his 571-vote margin falls within the state’s mandatory recount law. That law requires a recount any time the margin between the top two candidates is less than one-half of one percent.

The AP called the race prematurely.

Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie said the recount won’t begin until mid-November at the earliest and will probably stretch into December. It will involve local election officials from around the state.

    The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

    More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

    Franken said he would await a recount. He said his campaign was already looking into reports of irregularities in Minneapolis where some voters had trouble registering, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

    In a tight race, it transpires that the issue isn’t ‘voter fraud’ or ACORN, but tried and trusted Republican voter suppression. Win, lose or draw, my hope is that we could a good, long hard look at what happened in Minneapolis.

    I enjoy seeing hate out in the open as with Franken’s disgust for Coleman. I’m sorry, but it makes me chuckle to see Franken’s unmodulated full-throttle loathing right in the middle of pleasant society. If Franken’s rage doesn’t eat himself alive during the recount, I’ll be shocked. I’m for the guy, but I’m coming at this purely as a spectator here.

    I am going on record: at some point, for some reason, before an official winner is declared, Al Franken will be tased. Again, I support him as a Democrat. I’m just saying this: he will be tased.

    Considering that Norm Coleman was hand-picked by Dick Cheney to run for the office, Franken is certainly the lesser evil. Even if he gives himself a stroke in his anger.
