The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

I set up a tire swing at my house in Prescott. Come swing if you want. I’ll even BBQ some ribs for you if it will make you quit pretending that McCain and the terrorist G.Gordon Liddy aren’t “good friends”.

The cost of driving to the polling place:
    $0.65
    .
The cost of voting on November 4th:
    2 Hours, 22 Minutes
    .
The value of the irony that the very electorate the GOP villified for the past 30 years sinking their hopes for years to come:
    Priceless!

Is it true that there are only like 1,000 or so people at McCain’s rally in Tampa this morning? That would be pretty sad for him

Number of states you’re going to visit that McCain is going to lose: at least 5.

Just saw Charlie Crist giving Joe Lieberman a terrorist fist jab standing behind McCain in Tampa. It had all the authenticity of McLovin’s ID.

Meanwhile the Morning Joe Baboon Crew are busy blaming Palin’s performance on McCain’s staffing decisions, as they shamelessly promote Palin 2012.

And McCain delivers yet another random mix of his stale one-liners. G0d, am I sick of hearing about “countries that don’t like us very much.”

If I were to look at the US from a Canadian or Mexican perspective over the last eight years I wouldn’t “like us very much” either.

By the way, I am watching the speech live and they had it in Raymond James stadium where the Bucs play here in tampa and I can tell you for sure that there are no more than 2,000 people at that rally. And tampa is one of the major cities in florida and many people think hillsborough county here in tampa will turn the election for Florida. So for McCain to get only 2,000 people in a red state when Obama got 80,000 in a red state yesterday exposes what really going on in this presidential race no matter what Rick Davis says

McCain is like a chicken with its head off. Running from place to place trying to save itself but soon to fall down politically dead.

    That schedule is just sad.

insipid and irrelevant to the end.
little mikey scherer, hostory’s worst campaign reporter.
i imagined – foolish guy that i am – that i would be able to get actual news, based on a time reporter’s work, about mccain’s campaign.
instead, all little mikey provided was a series of mccain campaign press releases, faithfully transcribed and plopped down in the middle of various publications associated with time. complete with the stamp of approval of time’s editors.
yea, there was an occasional flash of something approaching professional reporting, but that event – rare as haley’s comet – only reminded readers of how most of little mikey’s lacked basic professional competence.
unfortunately, i’m sure there will be a place in the right wing echo chamber for little mikey – so he ain’t going anywhere – now that he’s earned his stripes this election cycle, by performing his job as faithful GOP propaganda officer, masquerading as legitimate MSM reporter.

Wow, what a hero! He must know something the rest of us don’t. While I get ready to celebrate McCain’s impending victory, let me flip open my copy of the 11/5/96 NYT I happen to have sitting here next to me. “Mr. Dole arose in the middle of the night in Sacramento, Calif. He flew to Phoenix; Houston; Lafayette, La.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Des Moines and Missouri and slept, if lucky, sometime after 3 A.M., Missouri time.” Let’s see: States, seven. Time alloted to sleep, none. Electoral votes, 159. Michael Scherer desperately spinning for his man Mac, priceless.

“Amount of time scheduled for sleep Sunday night: 3 hours 30 minutes”

This Thanksgiving, I expect to give thanks for YouTube. Prediction: John McCain will shift from double maverick to triple maverick sometime late afternoon.

“Coolest name of rally location: Moon Township, Penn.”

Meh, everyone goes to Moon. Sometime I’d like to land a presidential visit on Mars. (Too poor for the Republican Party, though.)

    “Number of Airport rallies: 4″

Moon Township is minutes away fom Pittsburgh International Airport. I assume most of the other rallies are near airports for maximum efficiency.

  • sgwhiteinfla

Mike Scherer since you didnt answer my question I had to go get the info elsewhere. And I was right, there was only 1,000 at John McCain’s rally this morning here in Tampa florida which is where McCain advisors were saying he was gaining traction in recent weeks. HMMMM not so much. On the other hand there looks like several thousands at Obama’s rally in Jacksonville which is a pretty conservative part of florida

  • timeisnotonyourside

The pain facing McCain is as nothing to the agony that Scherer will soon confront. No more barbecue! No more tire swing! No more bozos on the bus! Will MS pick up the shattered pieces of his life and try to find another semi-senile maverick to worship? We can but hope.
