Bill Clinton: “You Haven’t Shut My Demographic Out Yet”

Bill Clinton and Barack Obama just wrapped up their Kissimmee love fest where the two spent much of the event praising one another. Though, 42 did have one really awkward moment. Noting the diverse crowd – both in terms of age and race – Clinton said:

You’ve even got a few grey-headed, white guys like me. You haven’t shut my demographic out yet.

Um, hopefully he wasn’t really highlighting that Obama is losing the older male white vote in most states… or mean to imply that the Democratic Party is being taken over by minorities?

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Er, no, he’s telling them it’s way cool to vote for Barry. Are you really that clueless or do you just pretend?

  • bethnva

Man, Bill Clinton showed his true genius, made an eloquent and tight case for Obama, and Jay finds the little mote in his eye. Cynical much?

  • khakipants

I think we need more context on this quote. Taken just as it is, it doesn’t really make a lot of sense. Any chance we can get some of the surrounding statements?

  • ivb3016

Jay, I agree with others. A little context please. This didn’t make any sense to me. You’ve been doing such a good job lately – maybe it’s just that the campaign trail doesn’t agree with you. ;-)
    .
And good grief, I go out for the day and there are thirteen posts when I get home!! You have all been having way too much fun. But, caught up now.

  • newsfatigue

Jay, I took Clinton’s comment to be a harmless joke about his age. He’s been joking a lot about his age lately. I noticed that he stumbled a bit while introducing Obama. He did the same thing when he introduced Hillary at the Scranton rally with Biden. I think Bill does his “aw-shucks” routine so that he doesn’t look like he’s trying to one-up the other speaker.

Besides, I read that Obama is doing better with the white male vote than Bill Clinton did. Obama has the best numbers for a Dem since Jimmy Carter iin 1976. I’ll see if I can find the link …

  • newsfatigue

    From Politico:

Barack Obama, the first black major-party nominee, is positioned to win the largest share of white voters of any Democrat in more than three decades, according to an exclusive Politico analysis of recent Gallup and Pew Research Center polling.

  • etsumi

Agree with all of the above.

First the comment travesty a week out, and now on one of the bigger nights pre-election (it’s 1:46am EST), this is all that’s been posted? This out of context quote from Bubba. A 30 minute Obama ad, the B squared show in Kissimmee, even Barack on Stewart (a relevant part of today’s media) and this is the most you guys could come up with!?

Bad enough that not a single post today has managed to generate triple-digit comment spools (compare that to say pre blog implosion), but could you guys at least post about (like) the important happenings of the day.

    Talk about preemptive irrelevancy.

  • cfukara

    That WAS an odd comment.
    Happy? Relieved? Disappointed? Apprehensive?
Hopefully there is nothing to it.
[Bi=ut then, does Billy Boy play second fiddle graciously?]

  • kbanginmotown

“grey-headed, white guys”…I thought that *was* the Florida demographic!
    .
Seriously, though, the Big Dog makes a self-deprecating remark about his age, and he gets piled on? What’s up with that? Having gaffe-check withdrawals just because Biden went quiet for a couple of days?

  • maurice2u

This snippet really does feel like “missing the forrest because of the trees”. The overall context and presentation of President Clinton’s speech was quite positive. Additionally, this moment (when viewed) came off much more as self-depreciating than anything else.
    .
Fortunately we are in the YouTube era, and we’ll be able to make a full assessment for ourselves. I am rather surprised however that you did not make an attempt at assessing the event as much as seeking an “oddity” within the 1st time appearance of the pair together at a rally.

  • sgwhiteinfla

That wasn’t odd at all. He was talking about what has been widely reported, that Obama is going to have overwhelming support from the young crowd and new voters. So Bill Clinton was just pointing out that the “old grey haired guys” still have a stake in the race too with a little self depracating humor. I mean how nitpicky can you get when the many gave the most full throated well versed endorsement he could possibly give with out putting his tongue in Obama’s mouth and still he gets grief. I guess some people will just forever look for SOMETHING to say negative about Bill Clinton but I for one think he did one he!! of a job last night.

  • http://www.inworldstudios.com jayackroyd

There’s probably an element of wistful regret that his time has passed, kinda like Bilbo passing the ring to Frodo. But as other people have noted, the alternative is Gollum, so the moment is a small one.

  • pa56independent

Where is the video of Obama at the dinner party in LA where he claps and smiles at all of the anti-Semitic comments made by his PLO terrorist buddies? Where is the pressure to release this video from our Main Stream Media pals? Oh that’s right they are all in the tank for Obama.

  • sgwhiteinfla

Yayyyyyyyyyyyyy a new troll. Hey pa56, didja know that John McCain helped FUND the supposed PLO terrorist you are referring to? Do you really want people to focus on the $500,000 that is has been confirmed that McCain had the IRI send this PLO “terrorist”? I am thinking you want to leave well enough alone lol

or mean to imply that the Democratic Party is being taken over by minorities?

    .
The more I think about it the weirder that is. Bear in mind that Clinton didn’t say that, JNS did. Is it a fear/concern/hope that JNS has? Does she have racial “issues” Even the use of “taken over” can suggest aggression.
JNS you projected something interesting here.

  • pa56independent

A juicy vivid video of Obama clapping loudly, smiling with all those pearly whites shining as he laughs to the anti-Semitic jokes being told at the party for his long time friend, Rashid Kalidi would be fantastic right about now. It would make the Jeremiah Wright video seem like a Mickey Mouse endorsement for radicals of the world.

  • sgwhiteinfla

    pa56,
    .
The really HILLARIOUS thing is that the contents of the video have ALREADY BEEN PUBLISHED. pa56 let me ask you a serious question. This article about the tape is over 6 months old. So is your contention that
    .
    A. John McCain is totally inept for having let this much time go by before he brought it up or
    .
    B. John McCain is desperate.
    .
Here is a clue. Nothing on the video is described in the way YOU and John McCain just described it.
    .
So if the video hasn’t been released please tell us ALL how you came to “know” whats on the tape?
    .
    poof what pa56 disappear. LMAOOOOOOO

  • kathy

JNS – yeah, this was absurdly nitpicky.
    .
Bill did a great job. I kept wondering if Barack could hold his own against the old dog. (He did, barely, until he had to speed up at the end). But it sure was an effective reminder of what it was like to have a president who could put a sentence together, who created umpteen million jobs, who left with a surplus…

To answer your question in the eyes of Jewish people they will forgive Obama for socializing with a a palestinian before they EVER forgive McCain for giving a palestinian $500,000 that by your own admission could potentially go to fund the PLO terrorist. Now ask yourself the same question. Do you want Jewish folks to get the picture of John McCain funding terrorist?? Of helping to pay for the bombs of the PLO that k!ll innocents?? John McCain funding terroism is a pretty big deal I would think. Wouldnt that make him a traitor to Israel and the US? We already know he went to meet with General Pinochet the mass mrderer in Chile. He is getting a pretty ugly resume there.

Can the media please get past the notion that John McCain didn’t have the money to buy 30 minutes on 7 networks? Either he didn’t think of it or he chose not to, but he has 36 million left (as of a few days ago) and the ad buy was around 5.

  • Paul-no not that one

JNS — I want to seek understanding. Could you elaborate about what you thought Clinton said? I watched his speech yesterday afternoon on CNN live, and I saw someone who was excited, engergized and pro-Obama. I didn’t watch last night, but the talking points were the same. What did you see and hear?

  • Andy from MA

MM says Hilary is voting for McCain? Talk about betrayal. MM forget his daily dose of thorazine?

  • jarais
  • Paul-no not that one

Andy, MM posted that months ago here at Swampland He was trying to be “provocative”

  • rose83

Perhaps the most simple interpretation of Bill Clinton’s comment is the right one: he’s telling fellow old white guys that Obama and his campaign are going to welcome them. Which seems like a smart thing to say with the robocalls, etc.

Kathy, I believe it’s about 5 million per network. I actually think this is a fair talking point from the McCain campaign – it’s fair to criticize Obama for not taking public financing. It’s also reasonable for the media to put Obama’s 30 minute TV buy in the context of his decision to not take public financing. The problem is that they’re not talking about the McCain campaign’s evasion of campaign finance rules.

  • sgwhiteinfla

    PNNTO,
    .
No its not that. MM is still in love with J Mac. He is trying to blunt the effect of Bill campaigning for Obama last night. Even thought J Mac quit MM, MM still longs for the thrill of the tire swing. Notice that unlike all the other rethugs who have criticized J Mac he has NEVER said he was voting for Obama or endorsing Obama. Don’t have any fantasies about him not voting for J Mac either.
    .
By the way I guess we ran pa56 off huh? Maybe that was NObama or jamesryan in drag.

  • sgwhiteinfla

    Rose,
    .
No it was at most 5 million all together and at least 3.5 mill. I know for at least one network it was a flat 1 million. I personally don’t think there was a better way to spend that money. Also I don’t think any donor is complaining about him using the money for this commercial. On the other hand whenever McCain brings up money Obama is spending because he didn’t accept campaign financing just reminds people of the 150k the RNC spent on Palin which many of their donors are PI$$ED about that.

  • Andy from MA

PNNTO and SG: MM might have been trying to be “provocative” but it comes off as fatuous.

  • rose83

sgwhiteinfla, thanks. And this piece of information leads me to an obvious conclusion…. Why did they have to cancel Arrested Development?! How could they not recoup 1 million dollars and production costs through advertising revenue and DVD sales? 1 million really isn’t a lot of money. Also…. in the 700 billion bailout package, couldn’t they have set a aside say, a hundred million dollars, to cheer people up by subsidizing beloved canceled TV shows to go back on air? That’s a better use of money than the toy arrows thing.

On a different note, this is a must-read article: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/30/us/30insure.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin Basically women have to pay higher health insurance premiums than men, even when they’re the same age, etc. Key quote: Without substantial changes in the individual market, Ms. Greenberger said, tax credits for the purchase of insurance will be worth less to women because they face higher premiums.

    “video”?
What video? What do you know about the video and its contents? You seem to know it intimately and so by not releasing it, you ARE anti-American.

Should we make our decisions as Americans based on your feverish hallucination?

But we have seen videos of McCain denouncing the good old USA. From way back. Pertinent? McCain never forgets or forgives – and what Sen Obama’s acquintances did when he was 8 years old – is pertinent to the elections2008, right? So, we can hold McCain to what he did and said way back, right? Even if the conservative evangelicals don’t care, we can consider his sins. Like bigamy. Like fornication and adultery.

And we have video of McCain smiling as our former First Lady Hillary is called a “bitch”. And we have video of McCain pimping off his wife and mother of his children. And we have accounts and video of McCain calling patriotic Americans “gooks” and “tar baby”.

Would an anti-American like you bother to view them? Have you?
