Et tu, Shays?

AP tops a story about GOP bloodletting with a quote from Rep. Chris Shays, GOP moderate from Connecticut who co-sponsored Shays-Meehan, the House version of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform law. Shays is currently fighting to save his seat. Here’s what he told the Yale Daily News about McCain:

He has lost his brand as a maverick,” Rep. Chris Shays, a Connecticut Republican and co-chairman of the McCain campaign in that state, told the Yale Daily News in the latest criticism. “He did not live up to his pledge to fight a clean campaign.”

The Phony War: Obama and Romney Are Debating Character, Not Policy

More than five months from Election Day, the back-and-forth about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain already feels played out. Unfortunately, there’s good reason to expect the campaign continues in this vein indefinitely. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney are terribly interested in dwelling on policy platforms. Romney’s plan to slash spending and keep taxes low on the wealthy isn’t especially popular, at least not at any level of detail beyond a blithe promise to shrink the deficit. Meanwhile, Obama’s signature first-term achievements, like health care, the stimulus and Wall Street reform, are all unpopular or tricky to sell. (The Dodd-Frank bill is the most popular of these, but hyping it means offending wealthy donors.) So what we’re getting instead is a superficial duel about character–and, worse, one that’s based on the largely false premise that the better man can better “manage” the economy back to health.

Yes, he’s jumping on the trash McCain bandwagon, but if he really wanted to get on the good side of Connecticut voters he would have trashed Lieberman too.

    One more time, for emphasis:

  • Dee in Columbia MD

I’m teling you those Connecticut voters are so angry with Lieberman they are downright rabid and just want to eat a Republican for breakfast even a mild flavored one like Shays.

Well, duh. There is no GOP in the Northeast anymore. Bush-Rove-McC@in-Schmidt-P@lin have m*rdered it. Shays, Snowe, and Collins are anachronisms.

  • cincinnatus est exterminata!

Somebody should introduce Shays to Michael Scherer. Dee in Columbia, the same thing happened to Lincoln Chaffee, which I’m sure is heavy on Shays’ mind.

  • Jim, Foolish Literalist

Christopher Shays doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Lincoln Chaffee, who aside from a bizarre sentimental attachment to a Republican Party that died about the time he was born, is a good, thoughtful and smart man. Shays is Lieberman without the megalomania, and if part of the reason he goes down is because his constituents (belatedly) figured out that the little rat is no more to be trusted than the big weasel, so be it. Pity Mainers can’t get the same thing through their heads about that odious self-serving hypocrite Susan Collins.

Though it is fun to watch the rat try to swim.

THanks for staying on the cutting edge, Rep. SHays.

Lets try one more word rainbow?

Be happy, but realize that it’s no time to let up. (video linky, well worth it).

  • mredct

Shays has included pictures of himself with Obama in some of his ads here. He has really been downplaying being a Republican. He’s only squeaked thru the last 2 elections.

  • Andy from MA

Guess Congressman Shays, mavericks are cattle without brands. As Casey Stengle might have said, “you could look it up.”

Nice sense of irony, JC…unless you didn’t know that either.

Is Roberta McCain still leaning McCain/Palin?

Now JC, don’t be so elitist with the title of the post. ‘Shays, Dolchstoß’ would better represent the content.

    Bravo, Mr. Shays.
