Soggy Obama Served Cold

I don’t know which advance genius thought of an outdoor rally in Chester, Pennsylvania in late October but it’s freeezing here, pouring and knee-deep in mud. Obama, who spoke for more than 35 minutes before a dripping crowd of 9,000, with no umbrella, hat or gloves, should take a lesson from William Henry Harrison.

At CPAC, Romney Stresses Conservative Credentials

Three days after a trifecta of losses underlined lingering questions about his ability to win over the Republican Party’s base, Mitt Romney arrived at CPAC to allay skeptics’ fears. Throughout his second bid for the GOP nomination, Romney has made his business bona fides the centerpiece of his candidacy. But on Friday, before a packed room at the annual conservative confab, he sought to emphasize the record he compiled in Massachusetts. “I was a severely conservative governor,” he told the crowd. “I know conservatism, because I have lived conservatism.”

Mired in the Sticky Politics of Health and Faith, Obama Shifts on Contraception

In the face of mounting pressure from Catholic leaders and politicians, the White House on Friday tweaked its position on contraception coverage mandates in the Affordable Care Act. Rather than require large religious institutions like Catholic colleges and hospitals to provide employees with free health insurance coverage for contraception, insurance companies themselves will have to pick up the tab.

JNS, the World Series players and I feel your pain. It’s particularly not fair since before yesterday we had not had rain for nearly a month.

  • not who I claim to be

Harrison talked for almost 3 hours…but your point is well taken. As for mud, that should be no surprise given the GOP tactics this semester.

  • kathy

JNS – no jinxing! Besides, if you were a supporter would you want to find that you’d endured the elements and got a shortened speech? Getting cold doesn’t really affect your health unless you’re already run down (oops)
    .
In January of 2005 I waited outside in below zero weather for a couple of hours for a chance to see the Red Sox trophy. Really, really, froze my feet. Wouldn’t have given up the chance though. Love conquers all.

  • kathy

hey andy- thanks for hanging in.

  • not who I claim to be

Kathy we’ll see if this works at home tonight. I have my doubts. I guess I tweaked MS and JC once too often.

  • not who I claim to be

JNS loved the AP story over the weekend…was branded with the scarlet M.

  • http://phd9.blogspot.com Paul Dirks

He’s just taking a lesson from Bill (I feel your pain) Clinton!

I heard on FOX/Drudge that Obama collected all the umbrellas and redistributed them to the people who didn’t plan for rain. True?

  • Joe Bftsplk

JNS, I feel for you — sounds like you’re REALLY ready for this to be over. So are we, but I’ll grant that you’re experiencing more direct hardship than I am in my comfy desk chair.
Hang in there — we appreciate it! And I hope that you’re getting some edification out of seeing history from the front row.

  • Joe Bftsplk

    At least Woodstock was warm…

Obama should look into Traveller’s insurance.

JNS – wasn’t there a little contretemps about the historicity of Harrison catching cold from his inaugural apropos of McCain’s age and Sarah Palin? Harrison was of course succeeded by Tyler, considered one of the worst Presidents ever – before the modern era.
    .
But, the point of my post (and I have one) is that it is a myth that Harrison died because he caught cold while giving his inaugural speech. In fact, he did not become ill for three weeks after that, and undoubtedly caught a cold from one of the many office seekers who pressed upon him after his election, which was exacerbated by the pressures of office.
    .
This has been another edition of trivial knowledge brought to you by Mr. Know-it-all.

  • kathy

pourmecoffee – can. not. be. true. Is there no limit to what they will make up? I can see Obama asking folks to see that the elderly have an umbrella though.
    .
Philly.com says McCain/Palin have cancelled outdoors rallies (they had 3 schedule for indoors though.
    .
JNS – Philly.com says that the schools were cancelled in Chester PA so parents could bring their kids to this historic event. Did you see many kids there?

  • http://pourmecoffee.blogspot.com pourmecoffee

I’m joking. I’m going to do it even harder in KT’s post. I enjoy it.

  • Paul-no not that one

JNS links to Sweet (who I like) who links back to JNS. Interestingly
neither mentions, even in passing, what BHO said.

  • grape_crush

kathy: In January of 2005 I waited outside in below zero weather for a couple of hours for a chance to see the Red Sox trophy.

Heh. Did the Black Friday thing a couple of years back. Waited in 20 degree weather (no rain, thankfully) from about 5pm on Thanksgiving day to the store open at 6am. Being 48th in line, I didn’t get everything I wanted, but got a few things…

Thirty-five minutes? I’m sure the crowd appreciated the co-misery.

  • kathy

ivb – are you PA? don’t think I knew that. I’m trying to figure out if the weather vis a vis the Series helps Obama. If Philly doesn’t win tonight (which i hope they do) then maybe Selig gives the teams a day off as originally scheduled, so fans don’t have to have a delay of the game tomorrow for Obama’s half hour show (ABC showing regular programming. may their ratings perish)

  • Paul-no not that one

    Wow into moderation I go.
I never play scratch off but I am starting to get why people like it. Scrolling down to see if a comment posts or goes into the box is exciting!

  • Jay Newton-Small

Paul-no-not-that-one: It’s a stump speech, ergo he said exactly the same thing I blogged about yesterday.

kathy: there were a lot of kids in the crowd! I saw this one mom with a two year old in a ski suit who was just WAILING in misery…

  • jarais

    Jay,
Please get a flu shot. The last time I got really sick was after waiting outside for 5 hours to get into an Obama rally. February. In Boston. At least it wasn’t raining – that would have killed me.

  • Paul-no not that one

Okay thanks JNS. The story is the weather. Just wanted to make sure I understood.

  • http://pourmecoffee.blogspot.com pourmecoffee

It would be AWESOME if something DIFFERENT happened, like Obama TRANSFORMED into a GIGANTIC KILLING MACHINE and started to blast McCain/Palin signs. If that happens, you should definitely blog about it, maybe even post some pictures.

  • kathy

JNS – yeah, but if the kid lives long enough s/he’ll know s/he was present at the pivot of history.

  • bygriff

So, good grief, somebody hold an umbrella over the man! This is not the time to prove how macho he is.

  • kathy

Isn’t this the first time Obama’s really had to deal with rain in all the outdoor events he’s had? Maybe a million people enjoyed good weather, and a few thousand will have had the rain. It won’t be lost on Pennsylvanians that he kept to his schedule and McCain bowed out.

  • kathy

grape – no wii? But you’re young. I don’t think I would have waited overnight for the trophy. In fact, I never bothered to go see the 2007 trophy. How quickly we become jaded.

  • kathy

grape – I answered you, but it’s stuck in moderation. I had an unrecognizable word that the program wouldn’t have recognized, suggesting what you might have been waiting in line for. Let’s see if the rest will pass: But you’re young. I don’t think I would have waited overnight for the trophy. In fact, I never bothered to go see the 2007 trophy. How quickly we become jaded.

  • jarais

Okay. I just realized that the robomoderator eats posts that include the word “K!lled .” This is ridiculous.

  • kathy

grape_crush – double moderated. you’ll have to check back later.

  • kathy

the moderator seems to eat posts that have the name of the commenter at sixteen. At least I’ve now had three comments in a row kicked out.

kathy, yes I am in one of the counties surrounding Philadelphia which will be important in determining the outcome of the state race. I have been volunteering for Obama doing data entry based on results of phone calls and visits. I see a lot of people registered D who are marked as support McCain, but a number of Rs who are support Obama. My neighborhood is littered with McCain signs, so I keep reminding myself that it was a campaign decision to put the Obama money into staff and advertising other than signs. Hope it was the right one.
    .
As to the game, everyone on the radio is fussing that it should have been called earlier last night. It is still rainy and cold, but is supposed to stop and the game may go on tonight. I don’t know how the delayed start would affect the Obama speech, but the right has been carrying on about it ever since it was announced.

  • billiecat

kathy – the letters to avoid putting together are *r* *a* *p* and *e*.

  • southernbell49

I think Obama speaking to people is a wonderful visual. We’re in for stormy times, folks, and a president who is willing to do battle in any kind of weather is very reassuring.

  • billiecat

The moderator seems to be only holding posts up for a minute or two right now, however. Still sucks. (can I say that?)

  • billiecat

    Yes I can.

  • Jay Newton-Small

    billiecat: Interesting history lesson.

jarais: I definitely plan on getting a flu shot this year! I sympathize with you — I was at that rally, it was one of his worst. Both Joe and I left early as he meandered along, as he is want to do when he gets tired.

  • sgwhiteinfla

Obama was showing who will really fight for Pennsylvanians. McCain cancelled his lunch rally due to the rain. If he cant stand up to a little rain how will he stand up to Ahmadenijad? Thats what Sarah Palin would say if Obama had cancelled his rally.

  • sgwhiteinfla

    JNS
    .
I was watching the rally and at one point Obama said “im going to finish so you can get out of the rain” and on TV it seemed as if the crowd responded NO that they wanted him to keep going. Is that what happened?

  • kathy

billiecat – yeah, I figured that out about g_crush’s name after the third time the trap door opened.

The liberated comments seem to have gotten back into the queue in place, which is great.

  • Jay Newton-Small

sgwhiteinfla: Yes, the sado-masochists urged him to keep going.

  • sgwhiteinfla

LOL Thanks JNS I take it you mildly disagreed with their sentiments ;)

  • jarais

Weather-related sadomasochism? This is something new.

  • kathy

ivb et al. ESPN is doubtful the game will happen tonight because the weather may actually be worse – less rain but bitter wind. If that’s the case, the rest of last night’s game will probably happen tomorrow. bummer. OTOH, ESPN has given more attention to the “controversy” over the game being started/being suspended than they have to the game itself. what a surprise.
    .
Selig said the game will resume when he deems the weather “appropriate” even if they have to stay in PA til Thanksgiving.
    .
I’ll be getting snow tonight. Worse, I’ll be paying for natural gas to heat.

  • Paul-no not that one

Kathy-split screen next Tuesday! Game 7 and whatever else may be on that night.

  • grape_crush

    .
kathy: no wii? But you’re young.
    .
Thanks, but I’m too close to 40 to be considered ‘young’…
    .
As for the moderation, I’ve been stuck in moderation on about every single comment I’ve posted since comment section got nuked…Not that I ever have anything of great importance to say, but it would be nice if comments showed up while the content was still relevant to the discussion going on at the moment.

    JNS:
“Obama .. should take a lesson from William Henry Harrison.”
Lesson: “..One month later (William Henry Harrison) died of pneumonia…”
What are you, JNS, some voodoo queen?

    Joe Bftsplk Says:
    ” .. At least Woodstock was warm…”
JNS wonders what you mean by that.

  • panafricanist

I was at the rally today, frankly, Obama did a good job by showing up. The people there were impress and fired up. In all honesty, i don’t see how McCain can win PA

  • panafricanist

JNS sounds like a vodoo queen by equating Obama to William Henry Harrison. I saw a 68 year old white lady waiting to hear Obama, precisely, for 2 hours in the rain before Obama arrived at the rally.

JNS, please keep your opinion to yourself. Obama will do just fine.

  • wvng

And I went to Harrisonburg Virginia for the 5:30 rally today. To be held ini the James Madison U. convocation center. Got there at noon, there were already a few thousand people, some had been there since very very early. Was directed to the soccer field, and more and more and more people came. It was bloody windy and cold, but people were patient and hopeful.
    .
The whole thing was pretty organized, with effectively rope lined (with no ropes) walking paths. At about 2 pm, a campaign guy wandered through and described the path people would be taking to the convocation center. People stood up, and scrunched around the course a bit until about 3:15 when the center doors were to open. People scrunched around some more for another hour, but it is my impression that no one from the soccer field made it to the 7,200 person capacity convocation center before the center closed and they had to close the doors. There were more entrances than the one, and I have to assume that one was given great preference.
    .
Our candidate did make an appearance at the field for maybe 5-10 minutes, gave a brief talk, apologized that the center was too small for everyone, shook a few hands, and was off.

It was disappointing not to get in to see the main speech, but his coming out made, literally, all the difference for the crowd. People so wanted to see him, and they did.

Heckofa thing to see so many people hanging around in unpleasant conditions for sooooo long with little complaint. I have some pictures if someone tells me where to send them for posting.

I met some nice people, and didn’t freeze.

And then caught part of his speech on a tv at Costco.
