Palindrone

Ok. I’m still trying to come to terms with this. I wonder about the following:

–Does the McCain campaign actually think that Hillary supporters will be lured to the ticket by a militant pro-lifer who also believes in the teaching of intelligent design?

–Palin exploded her state’s coffers by imposing a windfall profits tax on the oil companies…sort of–no, exactly–like the proposal Barack Obama has made and John McCain has attacked. Apparently, she also supported the Bridge to Nowhere, despite her disclaimer at today’s event. So how does McCain explain putting a tax-raising porker on his ticket?

–Palin was an active supporter of Pat Buchanan for president. Does that mean she’s against free trade? No friend of Israel? (If you really want to have some fun, go over to the Commentary blog and watch the neoconservatives squirm.)

–Most of all, I wonder what Republican foreign policy and national security experts think of this–people like Dick Lugar, Brent Scowcroft, James Baker, Colin Powell, Chuck Hagel, George H.W. Bush?

Other than that, she seemed a fresh, delightful presence at the announcement ceremony today.

Mitt Romney’s Sweet Spot: Just Conservative Enough

Why is Mitt Romney having trouble winning over the conservative Republican base? One reason is his lack of political finesse, an air of dorky rich-guy aloofness that reminds some people of John Kerry. More important, however, is his ideological profile. In almost every important way, Romney’s policy platform is more moderate than those of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. Gingrich  offers a much more conservative tax plan, along with crowd-pleasing ideas like his plan to sic federal marshals on “radical” liberal judges. Santorum carries a blazing social-conservative torch, championing ideas like a constitutional ban on abortion. Both Gingrich and Santorum talk quite openly about the virtues of bombing Iran. Romney’s temperature runs cooler in all these areas. Not to mention his past record of pro-choice, pro-gay rights positions. As Jon Chait notes today, the GOP establishment is defending Romney but also working hard to push him to the right.

Conflict Over Obama’s Contraception Rule Intensifies

The Administration’s decision to require Catholic charities and universities to provide free birth control through employee health coverage is several weeks old, but the maelstrom of dissent it’s created is widening. Republicans, who charge that the measure violates such organizations’ religious freedoms, have allied with Catholic groups in opposition, and in recent days a handful of high-profile Democrats have joined their ranks in calling on the Administration to broaden exemptions from the rule.

Two years later, she sounds more like a desperate attempt at “anything for attention” and, as for the “full coffers” you alluded to, I have heard that there is an extreme shortage on money in Alaska, now. And the thought was that this would be the reason she quit so early versus her story of being “bullied out” by the liberal media.
Palin’s less than convincing arguments fall way short of having substance, her best shot is that the liberal media treated her way more nicely and with respect to reality, than the neo-con media attacking Obama from the Summer of 08 till even today.
“Birthers” is now a term describing a group of crazies demanding to see his birth certificate, teabaggers scrambling to hide their tattoos and sheets (well, not Rush it seems), and even the theocratic Bachman striving for a grip on power to begin her own empire of christianity (nation of nitwits if you ask me) and the Republican party emphasizing that we can’t go on supporting the unemployed (not remembering that the unemployed who once put their money iNTO the system are the ones hurt) while simultaneously giving away $15-$35 BILLION to an already profitable oil industry to continue drilling here in our poisoned gulf, our poisoned soils, and possibly even in our Great Lakes regions, too…
…the point being, one can’t even throw a hat into these folks without landing on ONE of these crazies. I don’t care if it’s the liberal media or the extreme right’s New Mein Kamph Daily and Brown Shirt Review (even if they don’t print real news)
