Edwards Admits Affair

And* But not love child. Wow. I’m guessing he won’t be speaking at the convention. *Apologies, it’s been a long week. I’d meant to say the opposite and clicked send too quickly.

Not Such A Subliminable Message

Our colleague Amy Sullivan looks at one possible subtext of that “humorous” McCain ad: It’s not easy to make the infamous Willie Horton ad from the 1988 presidential campaign seem benign. But suggesting that Barack Obama is the Antichrist might just do it. That’s just what some outraged Christian supporters of the Democratic nominee are [...]

“It’s not vanity, it’s strategy.”

Peggy Noonan has a wise piece in The Wall Street Journal today assessing the shifts in the presidential race. She credits McCain with closing the gap, but observes his persistent weaknesses. She rejects the arrogance rap on Obama, but observes his weaknesses, too. NOTE to commentors: I didn’t declare Noonan a genius or endorse everything [...]

RE: Cheney to Speak at GOP Convention

I know this is not what at least some of John McCain’s advisers wanted. Their preference was for Cheney to be at some undisclosed location, far away from St. Paul, and from McCain. Given the bi-polar composition of McCain’s foreign policy team (a combustible combo of old-school realists and macho neo-cons), I suppose it’s not [...]

Cheney to Speak at GOP Convention

Forget those reports that Dick Cheney had been banished from the Republican convention. The vice president will speak on the first night, according to the Associated Press. Seems Cheney will introduce his boss, who’s also speaking Monday night which happens to conveniently be the last day of Labor Day weekend.

McCain’s New Ad: Pre-Fact-Checked

As other commenters have noted, McCain’s new ad — “Painful” — finally corrects (sorta) the income of those families “Obama voted to raised taxes on” that McCain used to talk about. Instead of $32,000 a year, it’s $42,000 a year, which is still a bit off (it should be $41,500) but you can only use [...]

Obama’s Oahu

Here’s a little postcard on Obama’s Oahu. It came out before I saw his schedule this ayem where he has a “Welcome to Hawaii” event tomorrow with Michelle at Keehi Beach Park — that will probably replace the Magic Island rally mentioned in the Advertiser that I cite. Following Obama on his way out to [...]

A Whole New McCain

From my new story in Newsstand TIME (which, it must be noted, is a vast, modern, innovative improvement over the old Interweb version: portable for beach reading!! Plane reading!! In the loo!! Transforms seamlessly into an emergency door stopper!!), chock full of comment on Paris Hilton, stripper poles and chaps: It was McCain’s sort of [...]

UPDATE: Are the Clintons Over It?

Amid the reports yesterday of tension with the Clintons (and all the attendant cable chatter), the Obama campaign moved quickly on one unresolved issue that had been stoking it. Bill Clinton has been given a speaking role at the convention.
