All Quiet on the Western Set

Zoriah Miller is a photojournalist who was ejected from his embed assignment for publishing pictures of a dead Marine on his website. I am ambivalent about the merits of Miller’s complaint: To kick someone off an assignment isn’t the same as censoring him, and Miller knew the rules going in. On the other hand, the Department of Defense’s shifting rationale and wiggy behavior don’t inspire confidence. Today, I was swayed to take Miller’s side when he appeared on Laura Ingraham’s radio show (which may be the most bizarre aural personality strip tease since Art Bell). She argued that we don’t need no photojournalism because, and I quote: “We’ve seen enough of the horror, with the high-tech Hollywood, okay. We know what it is.”

And I thought shock and awe was supposed to cow the IRAQIS into compliant submission.

Miller’s blog is still up (that, the military clearly has no right to tamper with). He’s quite good, and he helpfully links to this story and slideshow, which makes his case even stronger.

Mother of Mitt: How Lenore Romney’s Failed Campaign Shaped the Presumptive Republican Nominee

This week’s TIME cover story, “The Mother of the Mitt Campaign,” tells the tale of how Lenore Romney’s 1970 run for U.S. Senate may have made a bigger impression on the Republican presidential candidate than his years spent as the son of a governor. Mitt’s father lost his own presidential bid, but it was the lessons from his mother’s loss that are more instructive as Romney enters the campaign stretch.
