Obama Raises $52 million in June

Seems fear is a powerful motivator. All of those stories about Obama’s flagging fundraising and Hillary’s donors’ recalcitrant giving have been disproved: in June Obama raised $52 million – close to his best month ever of $55 million in February. Plus the DNC raised $72 million $22.4 million last month. But, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe would still have Obama’s supporters believe the Illinois senator is the underdog in the money race. From a fundraising e-mail this morning (the bold is the way it appears in the original message):

I have some big news we want to share with you.
In the month of June, supporters like you helped raise $52 million. And together with the DNC, we now have nearly $72 million in the bank. That’s a very strong financial position to be in.
But we remain at a massive disadvantage to our opponents.
As I mentioned in my video message earlier in the week, the McCain Campaign and the Republican National Committee finished June with nearly $100 million in the bank.
We can’t stop now. It’s going to take everything we’ve got to defeat John McCain and his allies in November.

Mother of Mitt: How Lenore Romney’s Failed Campaign Shaped the Presumptive Republican Nominee

This week’s TIME cover story, “The Mother of the Mitt Campaign,” tells the tale of how Lenore Romney’s 1970 run for U.S. Senate may have made a bigger impression on the Republican presidential candidate than his years spent as the son of a governor. Mitt’s father lost his own presidential bid, but it was the lessons from his mother’s loss that are more instructive as Romney enters the campaign stretch.
