This, by David Ignatius, is very smart. It demonstrates how foolishly simplistic the Bush Administration’s policy and rhetoric, and the campaign utterances of John McCain, have been. One quibble: Ignatius makes it sound as if the Qods force controls Mahdi Army strategy. Not true. In fact, now that it is clear to the Sadr circle–a traditionally anti-Persian group–that they’ve been played by Iran, it will be interesting to see just which way the Sadrist movement strategizes the next five months, leading up to Iraq’s regional elections.
